  1. I agree with what most are saying. Registry cleaners only free a few kilobytes of data. They do magically speed up your computer. There are very few registry errors that can impair the speed of your computer. So for those CCleaner fans out there who think that deleting their temporary files and registry files with one click is speeding up your computer, then I'm afraid to inform you that you're sadly mistaken.
  2. I agree Malwarebytes is tops when it comes to any form of malware. I personally don't even use antivirus software anymore, I just scan with Malwarebytes weekly, however I don't recommend this to anyone else. But yeah, malwarebytes can easily replace a spyware scanner that doesn't have on the clock protection.
  3. Here's my list: Maintenance applications - (To keep your computer at peek speeds Glary Utilities - nice little all in one app http://www.download.com/Glary-Utilities/30....html?tag=mncol IOrbit's Smartdefrag - Great defragmenter http://www.download.com/Smart-Defrag/3000-....html?tag=mncol IOrbit's Advanced System Care - Good for removing services you don't use http://www.download.com/Advanced-SystemCar....html?tag=mncol NT Registry Optimizer - Good Registry Defragmenter http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/ ATF File cleaner - I do this very rarely but once in a while its good to d
  4. Ok, well from this I can determine quite a lot of things. 1. AOL Connectivity Service is one of your startup services. To disable this service go to start - run - type services.msc - right click AOL Connectivity Service and click properties. Change Automatic to Disabled and click apply. Then click stop to stop the service. Also do the same for the following services: GoogleDesktopManager Google Updater Service (gusvc) 2. You haven't disabled all of your startup entries the way Pete suggested. Go back and disable the following startup entries that are loading: Bigfix Windows Defender (MSAS
  5. I can tell you easily how to increase the speed of your computer, and it isn't from deleting temporary files that almost certainly will reduce your speed. 1. Disable all startup items except one antivirus program preferrably avast. 2. If you are advanced computer user disable and remove your antivirus, firewalls, spyware guard. Instead just install Malwarebytes and run a weekly scan on your computer. 3. Disable un-needed services. There are a huge bit of services on vista and xp which are meant for networking. If you would like I can give you the list to disable. 4. defrag your computer
  6. In my computer experiences there are many different ways a program can startup. If you don't want AOL software just remove it via add/remove programs via the control menu. That's the simplicity of it. It can either be 1. Registry Loading point that loads in the following Hives: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run 2. Shortcut-based startup found in the following location C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR USER NAME\Start Menu\Programs\Startu
  7. Personally I'm for a major stimulus package, not that I support/supported Obama. However I disagree with the way he's going about it. Most of the stimulus package is going towards healthcare and education. A very small amount is going to green energy. I think the reverse should be put into effect. Green energy will create home-based production jobs and will mitigate the trade deficit. Also, by putting massive amounts of money into entitlement programs we are essentially creating demand that we can not hope to lastingly subsidize with the extent of our national debt.
  8. To make things even easier you could just use samurize to let you know how many you have. Or you could use digsby. Outlook is a nice program which is pretty speedy in my opinion for gathering mail off of servers.
  9. I do not condone any downloading of pirated files but if you wish to visit a site to download legitimate files that are not copyrighted then I suggest using a proxy to bypass your ISP's blockage of that site. Simply go to www.fire-proxy.com, type in the site you wish to visit, and visit it. Proxy browsing is usually slower, this one is pretty respectable and it doesn't bombard you with advertisements.
  10. Have you tried using every usb port on your computer or just the one you're mentioning. Try using your mouse on every single usb port on your computer. If it is only working on your keyboard usb drivers then that leads me to conclude that you haven't installed the USB drivers for your mouse. Sometimes a disc with the drivers comes with your machine, sometimes it doesn't. If it doesn't simply google this: "YOUR MOUSE BRAND AND TYPE usb drivers" Find an appropriate download of your drivers. Download them. Then extract and install. If you have a disk then you can right click your computer
  11. I have just a little bit to add to Pete's excellent advice. 1. svchost.exe The process that is eating the most memory for you is directly linked with the amount of services you are using. Now it's hard for me to advise you to disable services until I know exactly what your home setup is. Here's some questions to answer: 1. Is your home computer system a network or standalone? 2. Is it a multi-account pc or is there just 1 account 3. What are your processes, for this you'll have to make multiple screencaps. First go to start - then run - then type services.msc Then Take screencaps of all
  12. Ok bud, here's what you do follow these step by step. 1. Disable all your startup entries except for AVG. To disable your startup entries use the following tutorial http://www.vistaclues.com/turn-off-a-startup-program/ 2. Next after we have those done tell us how your speed is. 3. Post the new screencap this time ordering your processes by highest memory first. 4. Download this defragmenter program http://www.download.com/Smart-Defrag/3000-...cdlPid=10998119 Click Auto defragment in the lefft when it starts up and disable the auto defragment and click apply Click Schedule and uncheck sched
  13. Yo man you did it it right except for one thing, I can see you clicked on the memory usage and ordered it but could you click it again next time so that the largest numbers are at the top and the lowest ones are at the bottom? That way I can see which programs are taking up the most memory on your computer. After examining the processes I could see I have found this: bigfix.exe It is used to automatically receive and read technical support information provided by computer and software manufacturers and other technical support experts. Also can automatically check your computer for bugs, confi

  15. Have you ever tried firefox? I used to use IE7 all the time, but I wanted to see what firefox was like, and I'm very impressed and have stuck with it.
  16. Ok here's how to screen cap. 1. Do a control Alt delete, click your processes tab, then click memory usage and click it so that the larger numbers are at the top. 2. In the top right corner of your keyboard there should be a button that is labeled "Prnt Scrn" As in "Print Screen", click that button. 3. Open up microsoft paint by going to Start - All Programs - Accessories - Paint 4. Once it is open Press Control + V and your screen should paste onto the paint program. 5. Save your screencap as Whatever.bmp to your desktop 6. Upload your picture here via the attachments box. We'll look a
  17. No the ISP could only possibly cause a slow in your internet access. Is your computer running fine and is your internet slow? Or are both slow and laggy? Also I would apply pretty much all of the suggestions above and then let us know how it's going, also if you could screencap your processes, it would be pretty easy to tell what is slowing you down.
  18. Here's mine, I hope you like.
  19. Ok well knowing that it's free of malware is a good start. The next thing I would do would be to disable your startup programs and services. Going to Start - Run and typing msconfig And then going to your startup menu and disabling all startup entries except AVG. Personally, I would uninstall AVG and install Avast if you need an antivirus program. It's much lighter than AVG is. Then I would disable Vista's eye candy by right clicking your my computer, clicking properties (I use xp so it would be slightly different in vista) I'm sure someone here can instruct you how to do that, and disab
  20. Did you first try a scan with malwarebytes? most computers are infected with some type of malware.
