The dc jack definitely sounds bad. Would the computer boot if you held the cord just right?
-
Most laptops I have seen will all run without a battery. The DC JACK is a common thing to go bad on a laptop. I get about one/month in my shop. After removing the motherboard, you can usually, but not always, spot the damage on it.

I too, wish I could go back to school. With a full time family and full time job, it is hardly feasible.

I also prefer survivor man also. It just seems more real. I Really believe he is alone for those 7 days.

i would really like to be knowledgeable and certified in server 2003. The computer repair business is ok, but the big money in in installing and servicing small office systems that use a domain and server 2000 or 2003. Businesses are ok with spending a large sum of money to get everything running well. I can sell a home user a system and maybe make $300 on it. I can sell a small office a multiple computer system and make $1000 - $2000 on it, plus make money helping it continue to run smooth. As of now, I don't have that knowledge or confidence to do it. That is where I want to migrate my busin

I tried a bunch of different time to backup the user directory without luck. I kept geting strange errors about missing files. I used the gui to drag and drop, I used the terminal, I even used windows to try and copy the directory using smb protocol. By the way, I am not completely certain this imac has firewire. I won't know till I go back to the shop in the morning. Do all 800 mhz g4s have it? I have not found anything conclusive, is iphoto included with 10.4.6?
-
I just got a job to upgrade a g4 800 mhz imac with a dvd drive. It currently has 10.2.8 . I am ugrading it to 10.4.6. I already added 512mbs of memory to bring it up to 768mbs. I am going to do a clean install. Any hints or pitfalls I should be aware of? I also told her I would back up her photos and itunes library. I am not sure on the best way to do this, but I will start researching that now. I am kind of excited to do this. I am completely lost to where things are, but it is interesting :-) Is iphoto incuded with the basic OS X.4.6 install?

I read you already got it. I was just posting some other methods that work. I personnelly like using the bartpe method. You just have to copy the files, no need to have to change any permissions.
-
Another easy method you can use is to boot your system with bartpe. Just boot your system with it. Then just copy the directory you need to access to a new location. When you reboot windows, the files that you copied to the new location can be accessed. You can also boot in safe mode, then you have access to the security tab. This will allow you to change the permissions manually.

Linux just like windows, prefers to be shut down properly. I don't think it is more sensitive then Windows is. Since you can't see the drive in the bios, that is not a file system corruption problem, but a hardware problem. The drive is probably just bad, but I would try pulling the battery and clearing the cmos.

i have not seen a socket A mother board on either of those sites for well over 2 months. It is not looking good

Internet Constantly Disconnecting
shanenin replied to Giggster's topic in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP
If you have a live linux cd, boot with that. If you are able to surf the web without being disconnected, then you can determine windows is the problem. If while running linux, you are still being disconnected, you can determine it is your hardware(or theirs). At that point, I would try a new network card. -
You guys really need more lake effect snow. I guess the few storms a year are not worth complaining about(compared to you)

Thanks :-) I am happy with the final product also. No regrets at all.

I just did a little reading on ntfs-3g, it seems to do well with writing also.
-
I think the problem is you have your set a umask of 222, that make the drive "read only"(and execute). You could change the umask value to 000 on your vfat drive, then you should be able to write to it. After changing the value you will have to unmount and remount it for the new permissions to be added. I don't think linux write support is stable yet. You probably do not want to change the umask to 000 on your ntfs drive. you can type the command mount to show if your drives are ro(read only) or rw(read/write)

did you set your samba password? smbpasswd -a sid
-
Do you guys all have the same workgroup name?
-
I have had typos like that really cause headaches trouble shooting a problem. I have a hunch it would work with file system "ntfs" now that you have the correct spelling of umask. If you want to be able to write to your vfat drive, change the umask to 000. Make sure you do not do that to your ntfs drive. Writing to it may cause file system corruption.

Cool :-) Glad you found the solution. When you mean boot at start, do you mean mount ? To have them mount automatically, just remove the noauto option from your fstab
