  1. No worries, he was arrested by the Toronto police for assaulting a limo driver...
  2. But, but... Washington needs his taxes.
  3. Doesn't it have a "recovery partition"? You are normally instructed to make recovery disks from there when you first start up a new machine. Make the disks, put them away safely, then strip out the bloatware.
  4. What's gonna happen to the many. many businesses and medical facilities using XPpro? Seems everywhere I go that's the OS of choice.
  5. I'll bet these 700+ cyber-squatters have better working sites.
  6. Great, now we find out the developers of the site used Open Source software. We paid this operation $100s of millions for development and they use FREE software? Obamacare Website Violates Licensing Agreement for Copyrighted Software
  7. Not all in one place, like a poorly implemented website. The gub'ment sez so, it must be true... 60k? And they have millions and millions needing access?
  8. That's a big "IF" your employer keeps your insurance rather than choosing to pay the fine, or kicking your hours down to 30 or under. Won't have to do anything but pay more for coverage you don't want, don't need, or just plain can't afford. Please tell me you're not drinking the kool-aid, Pete. Anyway, I'm not talking about a website so poorly written and ill-conceived it can't handle the traffic. I'm questioning the security of such site. After all, they will have every detail of your life all in one place, ripe for the hackers from .al, .ng, .ru, etc...
  9. Yeah, "i'm ready to talk, but I won't negotiate." Both sides on the hill are a mess.
  10. Heh... I know I saw it all coming. Shame the voters in 2012 didn't. They've had over 3 years to develop the site, and one guy said it's not even near a beta stage, and he said his company would hang their heads in shame if they brought out a product like it. Don't want this to become political, I'm just concerned about the security of the data folks are expected to submit.
  11. What do you folks think? Bad enough the site is failing badly, but what about the security of millions of citizens personal data? I'm betting the Black Hats have laid in a truckload of 5 hour energy...
  12. I think the guy is nuts, or really, really stupid. Nuts, if he thinks he is doing something honorable or good. Stupid, if he thinks he's going to gain something.
  13. You can also have a look at Tiger Direct. We've been very happy with the several "bare bones" kits we bought. They can be had for $350-450. Our local Community Center buys refurbished models and haven't had any trouble with their 8 hour a day usage.
  14. Thanks for the reply, Pete. We don't know if it has always been there. It was donated in pretty rough condition. (keyboard really banged up) I suspect it has been dropped. The shadow is kinda a mountain growing from the bottom of the screen, about 1/3 of the way up, and about 4 inches wide at the bottom. Inverter? Emitter? Same thing? If so, a cheap enough fix at $8.00. Any way to check the lighting? Re: led or florescent?
  15. I don't want to sound sour, but queries need to be answered. Perhaps we have too many choices of topics for helpers to scan regularly. Case in point. If we don't have experts in a field, why have the topic? I remember when this place was booming. Help coming from every direction and Jeff even getting some revenue from google ads.
  16. Well, my friend loaded up her 2 year old Prius with her two little dogs for a 5 week road trip to escape some Michigan winter, visiting friends and family. She drove from Kalamazoo MI, to Indianapolis, Alabama, across to Jacksonville, FL, down to Orlando, Naples, back to Jacksonville, then home to Kalamazoo. Don't know the miles, but she spent only $199 on gas... Heh, looking outside at the snow and ice, she should have found more stops and extended the trip for a few more weeks...
  17. Compac CQ60. Screen has a "shadow", or darker spot on the bottom, center. My research says it could be the inverter, or (gasp!) the $150 screen. Is there anyway to check before throwing parts at it? Is it worth fixing? We would sell it to a senior at our local Community Center for parts costs, and have already bought a A/C power pack, batteries, DVR, and keyboard. Total costs so far $75.
  18. A boss wondered why one of his most valued employees had not phoned in sick one day. Having an urgent problem with one of the main computers, he dialled the employee's cell phone number and was greeted with a child's whisper. "Hello." "Is your daddy home?" he asked. "Yes," whispered the small voice. "May I talk with him?" The child whispered, "No." Surprised and wanting to talk with an adult, the boss asked, "Is your Mommy there?" "Yes," whispered the small voice. "May I talk with her?" Again the small voice whispered, "No." Hoping there was somebody with whom he could leave a message, the bos
  19. I'm still around, drop in once a day to stay in touch.
  20. Nice to see you too, Joe, and I do accept reality. The reality that my United States has become a nation of takers. But hey, I understand you progressives need your entitled and dependents, so keep writing the checks, swiping the credit card, and borrowing from China. I always wanted to visit(become?) Greece.
  21. The "fair and balanced" HuffPo has 209 deep pockets for you to study. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/10/31/2012-presidential-campaigns-money-spending_n_2050153.html#slide=718838 You may like lots of charts... http://elections.nytimes.com/2012/campaign-finance Then there are the battle ground states... http://www.nationaljournal.com/hotline/ad-spending-in-presidential-battleground-states-20120620 So, the kettle may be black, but so is your pot!
