  1. Like an old clunker my milage is worse. Must be less walking and more beer Mark
  2. I don't remember if it was a pop-up blocker or a scan program. I think it was Spybot S&D (don't use it much anymore) that had the option to lock your homepage when you were setting it up Mark
  3. The wierdest thing I ever heard on college radio was the Music For Lesbians Over Fourty Hour. It was a bunch of chants accompanied by cymbels, bells, chimes and stuff. I listened to a lot of strange stuff back in the stoner days, but that was totally different Mark
  4. She didn't by chance just switch to AT&T/SBC for her ISP did she? Mark
  5. I'm an old fogey. Do I like rap? not particulary, but I don't care if anyone else listens to it (at a decent volume level). The thing is, I can't stand most of the music I grew up with either. I blame the radio stations. You have 2 or 3 megestations deciding what you will listen to. I swear to God, the station in Cleveland hasn't changed their playlist in 2-3 years. It's the same songs over and over and over.... That's why I'll listen to the college stations. Another thing that bothers me, is who in the heck decided we all want to hear a bunch of babbeling(?) idiots while you drive to and fro
  6. Remembering back a couple years I had the exact same problem with my wife's unit. Hers would'nt even send one email. I'm looking through my notes but I can't find what I did. IIRC after several calls and 3 different people to my ISP, It was discoverd it was the configuration on their end. This wasn't discovered until the first tier troubleshooters couldn't figure it out and I got bumped up a notch on the support chain. They did some upgrades, and I had extra accounts or something like that. Sorry I can't remember more Mark
  7. Yes I know about the ribbon cable positions, but thank you for reminding me. I know flashing is risky and I've never done it but I'm almost to the point where "what does it matter". I'm going to look around for an old 10-20gig for awhile. My youngest is kinda broke and if I could set up a Linux box for her it would be nice Mark

  9. Well, the drive works in my machine so it's got to be the BIOS on the other. At least the floppy works so I can try to (shudder) reflash. I've never done that but what's it gonna hurt on that old thing. Anyone got an old 10-20gig HD they want to unload? Mark
  10. Couple of thoughts. Was the firewall still turned off when it decided to quit sending emails again, or did you turn it back on? Did you install AVG free or is this a purchased copy with all the bells and whistles that will scan email? I know there are ways to ping an email addy, Google should help. Are the emails to a specific server or several? Recheck your SMPT settings again. I know that's redundant, but I've screwed up more than once. Don't forget the "periods" Soory I couldn't be of more help Mark
  11. I find it sadly amusing that when a celeb. or political big shot get in trouble the first thing they do is get a lawyer and check into rehab. Most times, before they even go in front of a judge. If that were you or me, we'd be in the slammer. Mark
  12. Yes the components are on the table and I can feel the drive spinning. I thought of Marty's suggestion too and came to the same conclusion Mikex did. I'll play around more in a couple of hours Mark
  13. I'm going to swap drives around with my box tomorrow and see what happens Mark
  14. New battery- check. Restore settings-check. Every cable in my drawer-check. Clear CMOS jumper-check. Cable select and end of connector-check. It won't auto-detect. It just hangs. If I tell my wife I'm buying another HD, she'll shoot me. Mark
  15. I have an old box I hate to throw out, so I decided to fix it up for linux. I pirated a formatted, but empty, working 40 gig Seagate drive out of my wife's unit. The mobo is an old Biostar with an Award BIOS. It supports large hard drives. I can't get the BIOS to recognize the drive. I'v set it to master, cable select, even slave with no luck. When I set the jumper to limit the drive to 32 gig position, The BIOS recognizes it as the IDE primary slave, not master. I've tried different ribbon cables, both 20 and 40 with no luck. I put the original 3 gig drive back in and it's recognized with

  22. Heck, I'm still using Office 97 on Xp. This is from M$: "Most programs written for Windows XP also work in Windows Vista, but some older programs might run poorly or not at all. For more information about program compatibility, see Make older programs run in this version of Windows. Also, Windows Vista uses the NTFS file system. If you upgrade a computer running Windows XP and using the FAT file system, it will be upgraded to NTFS, which might affect program compatibility." Also, check out this page: support.microsoft Mark
