  1. I have three different computers all with 2 hard drives. All 7200 rpm drives from various manufacturers

    defining slow= below 3 mbps. fast = above 25 mbps/

Computer 1: Primary drive is slow and secondary drive is fast.

I disconnected the secondary drive and the primary drive became fast.

computer 2: primary drive is fast, secondary drive is slow

computer 3: primary drive is slow, secondary drive is fast.

this does not seem to be related to the drives themselves.

I used the newer yellow ribbon cable (high speed?).

I don't know anything about smart disk. i never installed it on any of the computers. Two of them are Dell 600SC servers and one is a Dell 2400 desktop.

If I am not mistaken, Smart Disc is part of the Bios and can be enabled or Disabled there.

  2. okay when i went to one of my family members house me and my papa got to talking about computers since he is from the cia and use to work for them and such well there house burned up really bad and he lost 1600 dollars of software on his computer and also the computer.I'm no good at computer buying so i would like to know what could be the best broadband cannotion for him he only going to be sharing photos search the web talk to people and run software and such, also whats a good computer under 1100 for him something to do basic stuff but with enough ram and gb

any help will be greatly appreciated

The basic Dell PC would be good enough to do what he wanted. I would get at least 512 MB of Ram. What is available for internet service in his neighborhood? Cable is usually a little faster then DSL but if the speed isn't the worry, I would just get DSL as it is usually a little cheaper. If he has cable, and there are a lot of people who subscribe to their internet service in his area, it will slow down at peak times when a lot of people are using it. If he has cable, sometimes you can get a deal with them on internet service because you have cable with them. Phone calls are FREE to check on what is available and so is the internet. You don't have this problem with DSL. I have 1.5 and it is great. They also offer 3.0 and 5.0. I was on dialup for about 14 years and the 1.5 DSL is just great for me.

  3. i hope i posted this in the right forum. a while back a friend sent me to a site that crashed my pc and when my pc rebooted winprotral said rootkit detected so i denied it access. so I'm wondering if that is why programs and pc runs slow i have run a rootkit detector but it picked nothing up

ps any advice or help will be greatly appreciated its been a while like when i first got this computer

  4. My Sygate shut down the internet access because IANA keep pinging on me. so i am not sure what is going on. I backtrace the ip address and found out that IANA is doing this. it pinging on two apps, NT Kernel & System and NDIS User mode I/O Driver and it sending info to IANA too. so i created a advanced rule to block that ip address, it did but it still pinging on two apps. so i told the rule to dont allow those access to two apps. and it blocking it. So i ask it to make a packet log of it. amazing, it pinging on me every two min, but it blocked already. it all incoming. one outgoing from NDIS USer Mode I/O Driver.

    Why IANA is doing this?

    Internet Assigned Numbers Authority

Do you have a web page that you maintain?

    IANA

  5. My friend gave me a system once and said that it doesn't work. He got it from someone else that had built it. I opened it up and there was dust caked to every thing inside. There was dust in the video card fan, in a motherboard fan, an exhaust fan and all inside the power supply. I found out why it wouldn't work. The power supply was fried. It kills me, people pay gobs of money for systems and not even keep them clean.

Benefits of a Windowed case - constant reminders when to clean!

Sure is rough looking in that window with it on the floor shoved under a desk where most people keep them...

  6. Bestbuy also has a great deal, but they say the store only has 10 availbale.

This is from memory from last night....but i do believe it was MINIMUM of 10 at each store.... but still there is pobuly only like 15, i went to staples to get my 200gb HD, they had a minimum of 15, they probuly had around 25 or so, i got the 3rd to last one =D and it was only $30

Friday nites local news showed 2 guys in Destin, Fl. Walmart that were fighting over the last laptop. It hit the floor and they both hit the jail house... What some people will do to save a buck or 2.

    ummmm they are low-end laptop

Who do you think would sell you a $2500.00 Toshiba or any other brand for $199.00. Of course they are low end. Most notebooks are until you start getting up to about $900.00 or more.

Dell had one of theirs on sale and ran out and was nice enough to offer something else that was pretty close to equal. This one had 2 rebates to get it to that price. You can bet that they were hoping the rebates would never come back...

  7. its coming from a default user folder that was hidden all my stuff was duplicated i guess there so , even stuff i deleted is still there, so my question is should i delete this whole foder because the only profile we use in this pc is administrator

k my dad said to delete so yea

You should have posted this in the original post so that we would know what you are talking about...

  8. cause my dad says 160 gb is a lot of hard drive space and i have 100gb used, so it feels like there something thats very unecesary and is taking up lots of space , is there a way too see almost all the things or boiggest that take up ny C: hard drive space?

Do you have a lot of music and/or videos downloaded on your PC? That will take up space galore...

Have you ever opened up IE and went to Tools/Internet Options and in the General tab deleted your Cookies and Temp Internet Files on and off line then clear history. Then go to Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disc Cleanup then when it opens, put a check in ALL the boxes and click OK then YES in the next window. This will take some time to do if you have never done it before. Let it finish then run Disc Defragmenter from the same place you found Disc Cleanup and see how much you have left. You can click on your C drive and open up all the folders there and see what is there. There are hidden files that should stay hidden as this can get you into more trouble then you can get out of.

  9. The "tweak" you're thinking of may be

    Start, Run, Shutdown /F

The "/F" switch forces programs to close immediately without a prompt or waiting for them to finish housekeeping (as JDoors warns about).

It is NOT the recommended way of shutting down your system.

There is also a Registry tweak that changes the wait time before a program is forced to close.

(If you insist I'll look it up).

Again, forcing programs to close is NOT recommended.

    It is called enditall

  10. TY Pete,

now why would i want to use google, then you wouldn't of had the enjoyment of answering someones question :)

and the fact that i dont know how to use google....

and why have a forum if everyone just says "GOOGLE IS UR FRIEND!"

    Thanks :)

    much appreciated

Why would you want to use Google? The same reason why we do. To find answers that we may not have in the top of our head. I guess we do the hard work and you reap the benefits...lol Some of the answers to questions on Google will put you to a Message Board Forum like this one or others.

  11. Hey MrBill aint seen you around in forever.

    How's life treating you.

    M

Life's treating me well. It's the world that sucks...lol

Been great and trying to keep my nose clean if possible. Stay on another board and arrgivate the stew out of about 3 or for post counters there. When they get one of their post pulled I hide. I guess they get a monthly post count check. They even answer their own post 2 or 3 times in a row just to bet the count up. Admin pulls them often but not often enough. They stay out of the help board because they are to dumb to know anything about PC's. There are 2 or 3 of us that give the hell every chance we get which is quite often. How are you doing?

  12. I did my Spybot update today, though didn't pay attention to the date on it.

962KB for Detection Rules. And the English language one was 22KB. Went through the Australia mirror site for the detection rules, and did fine. But it gave a bad checksum for the tiny English language update, so tried the two Safer networking Europe places and 1st one didn't work, but #2 did. Then immunized it and will scan later tonight when I am offline.

I do have the older version still, so maybe it works better than newer one that came out awhile back?

    Pat.

    God bless everyone.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

The older version isn't supported anymore and you may still get caught with something that is missed with a scan.
