  1. have you been checkin the temps while it's doing this. Mine screams at me when i goes over the limit I set.

Yeah, the temps never change. I think ill just take everything out except the mobo, use compressed air and clean everything out and put everything back in place. It couldnt be a vid card could it? Because the screen never flickers or anyhting, comp just slows way down.

I wouldn't take anything out and do the air thing. Might blow some dust into one of the slots and not see it where a card plugs in and really drive you nuts figuring that out...

  2. Hey guys

Iv found i get have a packet loss problem wich seems to be afflicting me. I had to move my wireless router upstairs one floor and there is no way I can bring it down for other reasons. Is there any cheap way you guys know of to help with this packet loss problem. I my signal quality is almost never Excellent either, its normally one or 2 bars down from max. Im guessing i need to focus the signal to my antenna somehow. A cantenna will not fit so thats out of the question. Im considering buying a stronger wi fi card but that wont be for a few months. Im just looking for a temporary fix till then. It really messes with me when I play counter strike.

    Thanks!

What kind of router is this? I know that with a Linksys you can change the 2.4 settings to different ones that are still 2.4xx and it worked for me. If I remember right it comes defaulted as #6 which is 2.442GHz. It can be changed from 2.417 to 2.467 easily. Open up your browser and type in 192.168.1.1 and enter or go. Then leave the user name box blank and click on password. It is admin unless you have change it or the user. Then go to Wireless/Basic Wireless Settings and change it there. At the bottom of the page click on Save Settings. It will make you loose connection and the page will go blank with a window that says something about 8 seconds. You can keep trying this till you get something that works. You can also try moving the antenna to different positions. The other router manufactures may also have the same option.

  3. what make-model do you run?

Can you catch the beep code sequence?

Here is a list Computer Post-Beep Codes

    intel pentium 4 processor

yeh it is one long beep which keeps repeating - i've tried resitting the RAM - clearing cmos

    what do u think?

Nope on the cmos. Plug a real mouse and keyboard in. Not the wireless one. It needs to see a Mouse, Keyboard and Monitor to boot up. Might have a bad mouse or keyboard.

  4. Exactly as the title says. I've noticed people have done some insane customization of the Windows XP looks Well I've finally gotten tired of blue & green and Silver & Green. I Might want venture into other customizations but I'm sure it is a simple program that'll take care of that mess but right now just the Taskbar and Start menu Colors. Thanks for any help.

  5. Actually, just for your information here only...formatting does NOT erase anything, all it does is clears the Master File Table (MFT) entries that points the OS to where the data it's looking for is stored.

All the data is still on that disk after a format and anyone with data recovery tools can access it all, it has to be overwritten to be truly erased.

Since you're keeping the disk for your own use, formatting it will work just fine for your purposes, as it looks like an empty disk to the OS and can be used for storage or whatever. If you were giving the drive away tho, I would use something like KillDisk to overwrite any data on it so that way you know they can't retrieve anything off of it.

I agree with the formating statement. Tis easy to recover anything in there. A wipe is the way to go especially if the HD will be given away either installed in a PC or just handed out. I find that it is best to go to the manufacture of the HD and download their little utility that will fit on a bootable floppy to do the write with. It can be used as many times as you want on the HD before you reinstall the OS on it.

  6. i'm not sure about the jumper, i think i did it right as long as the comp didn't boot to that drive right?

and when i format it will erase the stuff on it?, do i want fat32 or ntfs? and do i do the quick one? 1 more thing, what is volume lable? the name of the drive?

BTW, it's an old quatum fireball :\

    Yes, formatting is erasing.

"do i want fat32 or ntfs"

Doesn't really matter if it's for storage. I think I did NTFS on mine.

I'd probably do the full format as opposed to the quick.

NTFS would be fine but won't work in ALL versions of windows. You would have to take into consideration what version of windows that you would be using this on...

  7. I used the same memory and different CPU to test

    But a different board instead

The reason I'm getting on eMcachines is because they constantly have crappy PSU's and now it's REALLY pissing me off

My suggestion to you would be to refuse to work on E-Machines. That would take the bitter taste out of your mouth...

If I kept falling off a bicycle because I couldn't ride, I would not get back on again...

  8. I've complained about eMachines in the past - most of the time it's faulty PSU's

But now I've totally had it

I was reparing a customer's computer - it had a bad motherboard - and I was replacing it. After testing the new board out of the box, it performed fine. I then put it in the case and plugged in the cables and the BIOS gives me a fan speed error - even though the fan is spinning fine (I checked connections, different fans, everything)

So, I switched to another board (another new one) tested out of the box, then put it in. As soon as I plugged in the power to the PSU the computer turns on and I smelled smoke. The CPU and RAM were fine, but the board was fried

Come to find out yesterday that the GD power supply was eating the boards - so I'm done with eMachines - they SUCK

The older e-machines were not the greatest PC's around. The newer ones have improved greatly. Do you think that e-machines makes their own PSU? No they don't. You need to Get on the people that made the PSU.

  9. Don't know if Mozilla is like IE where you can go to Tools/Internet Options and delete Cookies and Temp Files also. Have you done a Disc Cleanup lately? Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disc Cleanup and when it does open, put a check in ALL the boxes and click OK then YES in the next window. Let it finish. It may take a while if you have never done this. I would also do a Disc Defrag as soon as this is done...

  10. Man I feel your pain.

My cable was down for 3-4 days this week. Damn cable comp. claimed I had viruses spamming the network. 1) Thats insulting to me! 2) The internet is my phone.

Needless to say I raised a bit of hell with tech support but fell short of getting any discount off my bill.

    Why was your DSL down?

They stated that due to the fact that there was no electricity, the dsl was down. Must be a mom and pop phone company that can't afford a generator to keep the Central Office up and running...

  11. hi all i wonder i any one could help a friend

he has been using nortons for years

but has decided to uninstall it and use avg.

which by the way he swears by

but there is still remnents of nortons on his sys.

    a file named navshdll.exe

that wont delete even in safe mode.

does any one no how to get rid of this file

    thanks

    marty

May have to reinstall Norton and then try deleting it again. You can go to Norton's and find out how to delete their products. They have a sequence to do such. I just deleted 2003 System Works from a friends PC and there is nothing left. I even checked in the registry and nada, zero, nothing, zilch...

Delete your other post as it is the same as this one...

  12. Hi, I am having a problem where Internet explorer is loading the website "sweepstakes.com" instead of the desired site usually Yahoo. Any suggestions on how to rid my machine of this.

Have you tried to change it back and it won't stay? If so, you should go to the link that robroy posted.

  13. http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/

Wont get the error with Firefox, plus firefox is safer/better ^^

That is like hiding under the bed from the Bogey man. He asked for a solution to his problem and another browser isn't the answer. IE is fine. Have never used anything else and no worry's here. Why is it safer and better? Cause somebody told you? They all have their little quirks. Wish I had that link that showed there were more flaws in the other browsers then there were in IE. Yeah, you read that last sentence right. Put it this way. If there was a bag of pennies, a bag of nickles, and a bag of $100.00 bills laying on the ground in front of you and you thought that you could get away with stealing just one of them, which one would you grab???

  14. cable lover here! im so in love with cable, the maximum peak i got is 11MB. that time i was downloading one large file and it went to 11Mb in firefox download for few second then down to 3 MB. i am on wireless.

my IT network neighbor wanttttt cable but he said it expensive. well, he is semi-upper middle class, and he can afford anything, his wife is on shopping spere sometime. so he decide go with DSL because that company allow him to use router to linked to 14 device, that right people, 14 device.

He have: PS2, three replay tv, two tivo, 6 computer, one Dream, 1 mac, and a serveal neighbor he sharing his network to the community wirelessly.

I know, i know, you all wondering why three replaytv and two tivo. well, his wife a tivo lover, and the guy is a replaytv lover. so one tivo is in family room and one in her office. two replay tv in TV room and one in the master bedroom. Me.... a replaytv lover :D

the reason why the wife like tivo because it simple UI. with replaytv, well she kinda have a hard time with it while back but now she used to it since she watch with Stargate. the replaytv in Tv room have about 50' HDTV.

Bet that his speed is like Dialup. I never have heard anybody say that their ISP only allowed so many devices to be hooked up. They give you so much bandwidth and what you do with it is your business. The more junk you have on it and active, the slower it is going to be.

  15. I hate HP specifically because they load their computers with crap

    Who doesn't?

Well, HP is much worse than Gateway, Dell, and even their sister company Compaq

Computer I worked on yesterday came factory direct with half the desktop filled with random HP icons (resolution was at 1024x768!)

Of course I do have a problem with about every computer company:

Dell - Download site for drivers is often down

Compaq - Takes forever to reactivate XP after a reload - issue with Microsoft

HP - Preloaded crap and badly designed cases

Gateway - Really don't have a problem with them

EMachines - Practically no driver support

Of course reactiviation and driver support aren't much of a problem unless you reload these computers about every day (which unfortunetly I do at work)

Looks like it is time for you to switch to a MAC. Bet that you won't be any better off...

  16. hey guys , (btw i got my comp workin fine now , the graphics card just wasnt reacting well with my comp) anyways ya i go on some sites ( we could go on and stuff but im just gonna stick to sites lol) anyways i cant get them off of my url address bar in internet explorer and ive tried going to folders and making everything visable and clearing out my history , cookies , my temporary internet files ( online and off) , my recent folder , and my temp folder but they are still there plz help

If IE have you tried Tools/Internet Options/Content Tab~Auto Complete Take all 3 checks out of all 3 boxes and click OK then go back and click Clear History, Delete TIF and Cookies. See if they are still some there now. You can put a check back in the first box if you want to now.
