  2. nah didn't fix the problem.

is there a way to restore factory settings maybe?

If you are talking about the router and modem, there is a little recessed button that you will need a paper clip or pencil to push it in. Hold it in for about 15 seconds and it will reset it to factory defaults. If either one of them have had an update, you will lose it and will have to go get them again. Are you connecting wired or wireless?

  3. Would you guys recommending updating yet? I am now getting a little baloon quite often telling me its ready to install SP3. Should I keep hitting no, or can I install it now?

I have installed it on several PC's and not the first problem. I just let it install and had no problems. Didn't do any of the things listed in the first post in this thread. I know several no tech people who also have installed it and don't know anything about backing up or any of the other stuff. They have had no problems either.

  4. I don't know how much RAM that they have or the processor speed, but XP has a min. that it needs.

Here's What You Need to Use Windows XP Home Edition

    • PC with 300 megahertz (MHz) or higher processor clock speed recommended; 233-MHz minimum required;* Intel Pentium/Celeron family, AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family, or compatible processor recommended

    • 128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended (64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features)

    • 1.5 gigabyte (GB) of available hard disk space.*

    • Super VGA (800 × 600) or higher resolution video adapter and monitor

    • CD-ROM or DVD drive

    • Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device

I did one with a 300MHz and 128MB of RAM and windows 98SE ran 3 times faster. You should have at least 700MHz and at least 256mb of RAM. If they had everything backed up and wanted to use the HD that they have, I would recommend a 0 (zero) wipe to the HD and then a clean install of XP. That way, the HD will be just like it was out of the box from the factory. Nothing will be left on it. If you have a copy of the old Version of Windows, you can buy an Upgrade of XP Home and go from there. It will just ask you for an earlier version disc. XP is a bootable CD. You just need to make sure that you have your CD as first boot device and put the disc in and go from there.

  5. A problem with what's displayed actually points to an incorrect or out-of-date display driver. Perhaps you had updated yours but now have the older, original one installed. Check the video manufacturer's website for an updated driver.

Thanks for the reply. Between my husband and I, we figured it out, and it's working fine now.

Glad you got it fixed. What was it incase somebody else has the problem?

  6. Try this. Quick and easy. Not saying it will solve your problem but does a lot of times...

    1. From the Start menu, select Run.

    2. In the Open field, type sfc /scannow (Note: There is a space between sfc and /scannow)

    3. Select the OK button.

    4. Follow the prompts throughout the System File Checker process. Keep your XP disc handy as it may be needed.

    5. Reboot the computer when System File Checker completes.

  7. I'm with Sethook and Hondaboy--either a dud stick or trust what Crucial says (you don't have to buy it from them, but from what I've read, their recommendations are spot on)

Could it be that if there are two slots for Ram that both slots "want to be filled"?? I've read that, too. Sometimes an empty ram slot feels left out and revolts.

And whispers very quietly, "I have 256 gigawatts of Ram and XP works just great on my Dell" I know, I know...I'm ducking. Owww, throw donuts, not rocks!!

Gosh, I can't believe I'm actually responding to a techpost from Macmarauder.....I'm humbled. I'm probably wrong, but humbled none the less.

    Liz

Seen a couple of PC's that had to have it in slot 0 or 1 which ever they called it. Usually it is the one closest to the back of the tower. Nothing in there and it won't see the others...

  8. A friend asked me about a problem with her Dell. Since I have no clue what she's talking about and have no way knowing what to fix, I ask you guys for your help.

She says that some sound that the USB post makes when a device is plugged in or disconnected is sounding off randomly when nothing is being connected. She says it happens by itself whenever.

I tried googling but found nothing. She's running XP Home.

Wonder if there is something else that uses that same sound? Can she change the sound that the USB uses and see if it still happens?

  9. Had a friend who worked for Dell. All he did for 6 months was get a PC that was built to specs like the customer wanted. Then he would put in the programs that the customer selected when purchasing the PC. Said that they had programs set up for every possibility that could be had. Just had to select the program that # that fit what the customer wanted and click OK and get out of the way. Took about 5 minutes to get the HD all installed and then it was put on a conveyor belt with the order and somebody else boxed it up and out it went.

    Example:

XP Home or Pro or versions with Media Center

    McCrappy or Norton

Anything else that the customer wanted

The rest of the FREE junk that they put on

No burn in and no checking that all was fine. Said that they had maybe 1 out of 10,000 that would have a problem.

  10. I have this cd drive which has been problematic for as long as I can remember. Somedays it will work perfectly fine other days it wont read disks at all. When its being problematic the drive spins up and then slows down then spins up again for mabey a minute or so. Then it finnaly stops. In My computer it says there is no disk inserted but there is one. I put my cleaner disk in there and ran it through for 20 minutes but that hasnt helped. Iv checked all the connections etc etc...

Is this drive just dying/dead? Warrenty is definately gone by now so I cant send it back. Its my secondary drive so its not essential to my system. Somtimes it nice to be able to burn two CDs at once though.

That actually reminds me. I dont think I have ever had a problem burning disks in that drive... Just reading them.

  11. In case nobody knew this. Redo your signup and get a second key. M$ is allowing each two keys for a total of 20 install on different machines. Each key is good for 10.

Will that key work on my copy of XP Pro???lol Who would want to download it that many times when it takes hours now? Wake me when the bugs are fixed in it. Signed >>> Rip Van Winkle
