so who is your service with? Is it your local phone company? I'm getting ticked off at the cost of the cable internet here. I can get Sat. for the TV and they are starting to offer DSL in my neighborhood The only other option is wireless (Clearwire) and that isn't great in my area yet

  4. Another one is "I've been in love with the same woman for 25 years .......and if my wife finds out, she'll kill me!"
  5. Young King Arthur was ambushed and imprisoned by the monarch of a neighboring kingdom. The monarch could have killed him but was moved by Arthur's youth and ideals. So, the monarch offered him his freedom, as long as he could answer a very difficult question. Arthur would have a year to figure out the answer and, if after a year, he still had no answer, he would be put to death. The question ?....What do women really want? Such a question would perplex even the most knowledgeable man, and to young Arthur, it seemed an impossible query. But, since it was better than death, he accepted the monar
  6. just for what it's worth, I've had Ubuntu and XP running and I've used the grub loader which does write to the MBR but if you remove the Linux OS, then run the "fixmbr" from the XP install/repair. I've done this two or three times and NEVER had any problems. jr
  7. Yeah, I got one of those too. What is this all about? Although, all mine contained was a three digit number.
  8. Could you get a blade type fust block and replace the one that's in there now and then you could use the new blade type fuses?
  9. Well, I figured out how to get rid of that darn star..........I went and did a restore point from the day before the update loaded and then I went and turned OFF the automatic updates. Viola........no more star........
  10. that sounds like good advice. The FIRST problem that crops up is during the SP2 update process, you need to let the computer reboot. USUALLY this causes a lock-up on my computer. Upon restart, after getting to the desktop, the security center will try to automatically open, The program starts to open a window and you see ONLY the title bar on the monitor screen and then EVERYTHING locks up at that point. After a couple of restarts, the security center doesn't try to open and then I can get the computer running, It is at THIS point that I find that the games won't work and then running "DX
  11. Ha, well, thanks, but I don't own a copy of that. I do own an upgraded Win 2K pro. That's what I had on the box when I bought it. (custom made) and I was having troubles with Direct X at that time and I went and bought \ an XP Pro Upgrade which had SP1 already in it. So, my choices would be go back to 2K Pro, or if I really wanted to get retro, I could go back to DOS 6.21 (Ohh ain't that scary?) I really don't want to go back to 2K. I like my XP just the way it is but I don't like the darn "nag" about SP2 and I really don't give a rip about them discontinuing support after October. If s
  12. I am NOT getting a notice that says my copy is not legal. It just says that I am supposed to upgrade to SP2. Essentially, once SP2 is installed, I have trouble with Direct X -- specifically, Direct Draw and Direct 3D problems. This means I can't play any games. I DO have the most recent NVidea drivers installed and I have also upgraded/flashed my BIOS and I still have trouble. I know I am in trouble after the install when the computer has to restart and then it tries to open the Security Center. That program won't open--it starts to open a window and then all you see of the window is the co
  13. Got the message the other day that there was a M$ update waiting for me do download and install. Checked it out and it was their "validation program".....I figured, what the heck, my software is bought and paid for. I installed it. Now, I have this little star shaped thingie in the task bar by the clock and if you hover the cursor over it, it says that support for SP1 will run out in October. Well, I know that and I CAN'T get my computer to run right with SP2 installed, so I don't have SP2 installed. (Really long and complicated story) Is there a way to get rid of this star shaped thingie
  14. Sam has been in the computer business for 25 years and is finally sick of the stress. He quits his job and buys 50 acres of land in Alabama to be as far from humanity as possible. Sam sees the mailman once a week and gets groceries once a month. Otherwise, it's total peace and quiet. After 6 months or so of almost total isolation, he's finishing dinner one day when someone knocks on his door. He opens it and there is a big, bearded man standing there. "Name's Enoch... Your neighbor from four miles over the ridge... Having a party Saturday... Thought you'd like to come." "Great," says Sam, "a

  19. Hi experts!! I have just recently re-installed Ubuntu 5.10 and I know that there is a place to change a setting somehow so that I don't have to always enter a password and log on name. I can't remember where this setting is, however, so I am wondering if somebody can point me in the right direction. Thanks!! Jim
  20. From a Washington Post Report, in which readers were asked to tell Gen-Xers how much harder they had it in the old days: Second Runner-Up: In my day, we couldn't afford shoes, so we went barefoot. In the winter we had to wrap our feet with barbed wire for traction. (Bill Flavin, Alexandria) First Runner-Up: In my day we didn't have MTV or in-line skates, or any of that stuff. No, it was 45s and regular old metal-wheeled roller skates, and the 45s always skipped, so to get them to play right you'd weigh the needle down with something like quarters, which we never had because our allowances were
  21. I think the file that you have to edit is the grub.lst file Once you open it, you should be able to figure out where to cut and paste so that Windows is the first loaded.
  22. This year's run away winner was Mrs. Merv Grazinski of Oklahoma City,Oklahoma. Mrs. Grazinski purchased a brand new 32-foot Winnebago motor home. On her first trip home, (from an OU football game), having driven onto the freeway, she set the cruise control at 70 mph and calmly left the drivers seat to go into the back & make herself a sandwich. Not surprisingly, the RV left the freeway, crashed and overturned.Mrs.Grazinski sued Winnebago for not advising her in the owner's manual that she couldn't actually do this. The jury awarded her $1,750,000 plus a new motor home. The company actuall
