  1. This was FUNNY!!! Thanks
  2. One thing that you may not have thought of is that WinXP usually formats the disk NTFS file system and Win 98 is FAT32 file system. I don't think you can install 98 once it has been formatted NTFS Not sure but a suggestion
  3. Ok I'll try that I did part of it before but when I got to the screen that said it wanted to format the partition, I freaked. I didn't want to format and lose all the data. I guess I'm at a point right now where I don't expect I'll be able to save it, although, there is a lot of stuff on there.......music files and pictures, and stuff like that, that I'd really not like to have to duplicate. Thanks for the suggestion
  4. Hi All The other night, I turned on the computer and got a screen that gave me choices of: Safe Mode Safe Mode with networking Safe Mode with something else Last know configuration that worked Start Windows normally. The computer worked fine that morning and I can't figure what changed but something did. I tried everything, all the choices above, to get the darn thing to boot and nothing worked. It just kept looping back to the POST--- SO I put the XP disc in the CD drive and booted up from CD and I can get the computer up that way but I can't access the disk. I ran the repair console and I
  5. Thanks for the input, JSKY. I did all the stuff you suggested but it didn't work. I still get the screen asking which profile to load
  6. I had to do a complete re-install and reformat with WinXP Pro Now, every time I boot up, I get asked if I want to log in as "me" or as the administrator. I didn't used to get asked this, it always logged me in as "me". How do I do this again? Does somebody know what the settings have to be?? Thanks! Jim
  7. Thanks, Chappy You've answered a lot of questions for me. Much appreciated!!!
  8. maybe Ebay?? I went there and looked and there quite a few listings.
  9. I like to do a clean install including reformat every year or so just to clean up my computer. In the past, I have always had Win 95 and then Win 98 OEM versions and there was no problem doing a reinstall of these OS's I have been running Win XP Pro for the last year and am ready to do my clean up and I understand that after I reinstall the OS, I am going to have to re-activate (re register??) my XP Pro and that the OS won't let me reinstall without some kind of new "key" number. Now, I bought the XP upgrade so I REALLY do own it. Am I going to have problems when it comes time to re-activa
  10. You know, I said this in an earlier post, but I NEVER had to PAY for a BIOS update. They have ALWAYS been free downloads. Does anybody else think this is unusual???
  11. Gee, I think so too. I haven't had to upgrade my present box but on my last two computers, I upgraded the BIOS with a FLASH program and I don't remember having to pay anything for it. I DO know that everything I have read says don't do it (FLASH the BIOS) if you don't absolutly have to because it can screw everything up if something goes wrong during the upgrade. The two times that IDID do it, everything went fine. I don't mean to scare you off but make sure that your data is backed up safely before you do anything.
  12. RE: type defrag c: -b press enter I'm not one to just type in commands with switches. Can you tell me what the "-b" does to the defrag command?
  13. It depends on a couple of things but if you have broadband, like cable, that is always hooked up, and you don't have a hardware firewall, such as a router, then you really should have a firewall installed.
  14. FireFox is just a browser. LIke IE6 or Opera or Netscape. Mozilla is a suite of programs all linked together.....Browser, Email, Newsgroups and so on. A lot of people like FireFox because IE6 is a microsoft product and gets hacked a lot. I find that Firefox loads quicker, and loads pages quicker and it has built in pop up blockers that really work. You should be able to do anything with it that you do now with your current browser. If you like having a Email program that is integrated with it, then you should look at Mozilla instead. I use Eudora for my Email so I don't need Mozilla.
  15. I typed what you said and I got a dialog box that said that Windows was already activated. So.what is this supposed to do for me????
  16. The other option is to right click it and choose "save image as' and then choose your destination as the place to save it. Won't that work too?
  17. My two favorite teams are the Packers and whoever's beating the Cowboys
