  2. The proposed act would: "Remove all penalties under California law for the cultivation, transportation, sale, purchase, possession, and use of marijuana, natural THC and paraphernalia by persons over the age of 21," "prohibit local and state law enforcement officials from enforcing federal marijuana laws (more on that later)" and establish a fee of $50 an ounce on marijuana on top of whatever pot will cost in a legal future - which legalization advocates say is about half what it costs now. http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/comments_b...uana-legal.html

  4. Don't hide your SSID. "There is no such thing as 'SSID hiding'. You're only hiding SSID beaconing on the Access Point. There are 4 other mechanisms that also broadcast the SSID over the 2.4 or 5 GHz spectrum. The 4 mechanisms are; probe requests, probe responses, association requests, and re-association requests. Essentially, youre talking about hiding 1 of 5 SSID broadcast mechanisms. Nothing is hidden and all youve achieved is cause problems for Wi-Fi roaming when a client jumps from AP to AP. Hidden SSIDs also makes wireless LANs less user friendly." http://blogs.zdnet.com/Ou/index.php?p=43

  7. Indeed. Not to say we should be like China... as they have their fair share of problems (especially in government)... but look at their economic success. Many experts say they're on track to be the world's next powerhouse. I never said we should be 100% socialistic, but I don't understand why people complain about Social Security, Medicare, Unemployment, etc. I'd like anyone to tell me that they won't take their Social Security, or if they lose their job they won't take their Unemployment help.

  9. Doesn't anything socialistic make you want to throw up? Like great public schools, or health insurance for all? Why is that a bad thing?

  11. Startup Utilities Startup managers are programs that help you control the way your operating system starts up. With these programs you can enable or disable programs and services that automatically run each time you start your computer. I need to warn you though, making changes to the startups that are too radical can get you into trouble. You may have to boot into safe mode and restore your settings back a day if you significant changes to your startups and XP refuses to restart prop

  16. Security Tools Keeping your computer safe is not limited to the internet. You also need to keep it secure when you are not on the internet. Opening files of dubious origin always involves risk of infection or hijacking, but you never know about the ones that your friend brings . Often it's someone else using your computer that infects it unwittingly. Peer to Peer file sharing is also a major source of infection. While in the past most viruses targeted security holes in Windows or Internet Explorer; nowmost take advantage of social engineering to lure you to click to install something or exploi

  18. As most of you know, we have a pinned thread Commonly Recommended Software, Links, And Tips. Back when much of us migrated here from TechTV, JSKY and mlegg helped bring that list to BestTechie. Unfortunately, it has been quite some time since the list has been updated, added to, and trimmed. So, our new goal is to come up with a new list, exclusive to BestTechie, generated 100% from our users. 20. Malwarebytes' Ant-Malware is really the best thing out there right now. It's fast and very powerful. We here at BestTechie even sponsor and host the application. You can download it directly here: http://www.besttechie.net/mbam/mbam-setup.exe If you like it, I would highly suggest getting the paid version. It offers real-time protection, among other features. Worth the buy in my opinion.
  21. In my opinion, your comment is nieve. Iran is the one offering talks, aren't they? So why can't we negotiate--because the media makes him look like Hitler? I can't believe anyone would "prefer" any invasion over another. It isn't our job, our place, or our privilege to invade another country just because we don't like how they run things.
  22. Nice. I played with Knoppix a bit in '04. I was on-and-off linux for a few year... went to Debian, and now on Ubuntu.
