  1. Marty She settled for a 4.5 star hotel in Manhattan, NY for a weekend and a New Dooney & Bourke purse wti matching wallet. (did you know you have to register a purse?) The purse alone cost me $400. Before you all call me hen pecked (though no hen has lips like my wife {this how we got 6 kids}) This is a combo gift she finishes her MBA this week so I promised her a trip the purse was a bribe. Preston Sure you aren't up to building something ? Pretty simple, just four screws, two cables to connect. Same effort as installing a new drive. Check out my post here about NAS with built in FTP,
  2. My connection is great with Comcast but they are installing Fiber optics in the surrounding small towns (no cable service out there) and I here they are going you service our area for about the same as I'm pay for comcast. I may switch it is infinitely faster

  4. In Linux most of the threat is internal not running as Root is to protect you against yourself and or others on a multi-user machine. you gotta admit with an enviroment that lends itself to great flexability and customization like Linux and other Open Source OSs run in a non-Super User mode saves you many hours of self-loathing for doing something stupid and having you fix it without the help of a commercial off the shelf app like you can with Windows. As for windows TheTerrorist_75 explained more eloquently and Complete than I could. Preston
  5. We never run with Admin privileges for day to day use. It takes a little longer to setup limited account with enough flexibility to not be a hindrance but it is worth it in the long run just for security purposes. it was a good point the poster made. You would not think of running ROOT in Linux but most people run as admin in windows which is far greater a security risk. Preston
  6. thanks guys I was leaning toward the seagate.
  7. My wife's compaq has eaten it's 2nd HDD this years and now she is pointing fingures at me because I keep all my stuff backed up. So I am in active get ot of the Dog house mode. If any you can recommend a decent external (yes I know I can build but I don't want to besides my wife would not trust it as much) I have looked at: Seagate external (160 gig) EZ Bus 60GB USB2.0 Portable Hard Drive (60 gig) DiskGO! 80 GB 3.5" USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive and s few Lacie products. 8. Marty I made the switch to Thunderbird a few years back and can say beyond a shadow of a doubt you will never miss OE. Hey first Opera now Thunderbird our little boy is growing up (sentimental tear in corner of eye). Preston
  9. I prefer to turn mine off. I have left it on for several weeks at a time with not ill effects but if I'm not using it it goes off i'm wierd like that. win I first purchased this house I had to cut a opening in the crawl space to the othe half of the crawl space because they sealed it up and no vents on that part of the house it was starting to mildew (all fixed). Wel under there was a light fixture that had been on (Sealed up) since electricity was turned on (almost a year at that point) That light served no purpose being on so it errked! something fierce. It is the same with the computer. I d
  10. I'm fairly sure you are not 100% safe even with the preview pane off. It is just a precaution to turn it off it will keep you relatively safe. So I don't think you have won. I maybe wrong maybe someone can back me on this or shoot it down either way. Lets start a poll!
  11. Used it years ago and liked it very nice program.
  12. Also the number of people on the online in your area will make no difference that slow down occurs only with Cable connection. I feel like the DSL plan is a better deal.
  13. The problem is that NAV does not show me what the file that was detected is, nor does it tell me where it is, so disinfection of this is impossible at this time. However, the NAV information says that the Bla block rule blocks the intrusion, but I want to eliminate the trojan entirely - Is there another program that I can use to detect it, and delete it? Or is there a way to force NAV to pick it up and show me the file name and location??? Any help would be appreciated Brian you maybe able to locate it and delete it with A- Squared http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/ or ewido http://w
  14. Refer to qoute at begining of post to know what is wrong with it. This is a issue that has been bouncing around since I can remember. Some say yes use MSconfig it is OK others (myself included) say don't. I do know I have had less problems out of windows since I stopped using MSconfig. As for the post I would go back into MSconfig and turn on anything you have turned off then use the appliction prefs and or one of the programs like Mike Lin's Startup control panel or even Spybot Search and Destroy (advanced mode) to disable unwanted apps. I use Mike Lin's startup monitor to prevent items from
  15. I thought I posted this but there is a new update for Opera the new version is 8.52. I'm a opera head from way back to version 1. I use almost nothing else. It may be challenging in the begining but soon you will wonder how you ever used IE. Preston
  16. I used jetaudio to do this then I use MP3Directcut slice her up. I purchased jetAudio with the advanced recording feature now I have control over silence level this way it will start a new track. also has a trimmer. Also I have used RipVinyl over the years When I first started it also has a silence indicator. It wads 7buck in the day but I think it is 11 now worked out great for me. http://www.ripvinyl.com/ But if you don't want to purchase anything Jetaudio standard will do. Actually you can play the Album click the start to record button the at the end of the track hit stop then start again
  17. Have used with no problems xpize http://xpero.msfn.org/

  22. have you cleared the recycle bid? On large files they still take up HD space if they are in the recycle bin. you can hold down the shit key when you delete to bypass the recycle bin If you need to delete large file and sure you do not need then anymore. All Harddisk have errors on them keep a eye on it if the size continues to grow then you have a problem. I had a old HD that had at least that many bad sectors on it but in the 6years I owned it the sectors never increased so I did not worry about it. Preston Preston
  23. Even better JetAudio http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/jetAudio_...c/jetaudio.html. Audacity can be a bear to adjust gain on. Remember if you have you wav level in your windows sound controls set to high you will get crappy sound. JetAudio makes it simple once you get the wav level correct but any program will take some time to familiarize yourself with the controls and settings. Preston By the way I have tried most sound recorders including the ones listed JetAudio is easiest for me plus you record in .ogg, .flac, .ape (monkey) aside from the standard .wav, mp3, and wma.
  24. Thats what I get for posting a ling from a news letter and not reading I ha read about it on another security forum. Sorry if my link is useless.
