  1. People commit all sorts of crime whether it is legal or not. If you make anything legal that's currently illegal think of all the money we'd save in police, investigations, prosecutions, incarcerations! We spend too much on that stuff anyway! Of course far more people will commit those acts. Many don't right now simply because it's illegal, or they are deterred because they don't want to get caught. but if it was OK they'd be doing it for sure. Are we supposed to say "So what" if it harms them or endangers others? And I guess we would have to ignore any cost to society in general. "People do
  2. No surprise there. Most states have mismanaged their funds and are in no hurry whatsoever to fix that, so why NOT grab all the federal cash you can instead?
  3. Reasonable, meaning they agree with you? Again, we can't KNOW that it won't be any more problematic than the current mess that comes with alcohol and tobacco addictions (how much does that cost society?), but let's pretend we know, and, at it's worst, it's exactly equal. I would still say there is no reason to ADD to the addictive, psychoactive drugs already available to the public.
  4. Oh yeah, Windows '98 does not handle memory anywhere near as well as later versions. Once you're used to the newer versions, being able to open anything at any time, leave 'em all open, or not, have icons all over the place, use fancy wallpapers, screensavers, who cares! Newer Windows versions can handle it! And newer computers are SO fast and have SO much memory everything you run just ... runs. So run another program right away, and another, and another, who cares! Newer computers can handle it! Yeah, not so much with a Windows '98 machine. EVERYTHING you have on screen takes up precious me
  5. We don't know that though. What if the same number of people who smoke and/or drink smoked marijuana? What if even MORE people took it up? Like alcohol and tobacco, the evidence is in, and like alcohol and tobacco, people who support the use of the product simply pretend that evidence doesn't count or doesn't apply to them.
  6. If you knew history and the reason that was worded that way you wouldn't be asking that, but the Second Amendment per se wasn't my point anyway. I could just as well have used the First Amendment and restrictions on that, such as public safety and libel laws, to make my point. And the point is, we give up a lot of our liberties for a lot of reasons. Liberty does not mean doing whatever you want regardless of the consequences. -----
  7. Marty, briefly checked out the site, looks like it's just what I needed. Pete, with a firewall, updated virus definitions and safe computing it's tough to get infected no matter what OS you're using. Any OS is vulnerable to a day one exploit, that's kinda the definition of day one exploit. Just as new software exploits the new feature set of recent OS's and so will not work on old ones, new malicious exploits target new features and often will not function on old OS's (I've seen many new exploits that target features '98 does not have -- the definitions specifically say '98 is not vulnerable t
  8. That sure made me smile as it made Pete's point. I worked in a disposable diaper plant and for different brands all we did was change the packaging. It makes your point too though as the markup is unbelievable. ----- Forgot to say: If you're a coupon clipper this seems like an easy way to help.
  9. The use of buzz phrases like "disproportionate response" and "war crimes" isn't going to solve a thing. Is it possible no one truly wishes to resolve this conflict for good? Does it serve some purpose without which people would have to deal with problems they wish to ignore? History shows the only resolution to ongoing conflict is the utter conquest of one people or idea over another. Are we so unwilling to accept a permanent solution that we're resigned to having an infinite war?
  10. What liberty? Legal retail drugs are HIGHLY regulated. Where's your freedom there? There are tens of thousands of restrictions on your Second Amendment Rights already and yet, we just elected the most vehemently anti-Second Amendment President in history. Where's your freedom there? People apparently don't want liberty; they want the government to tell everybody what to do, when to do it, and how to do it. "I should be free to do whatever I want regardless of the consequences to myself or others" isn't an argument, it's a philosophy. ----- Liberty means responsibility. That is why most men dr

Except that Mujibar now uses the Americanized name "Matthew" (pronounced "Ma-chew"). ----- Dangit. I feel bad making fun of an accent, but outsourced phone call centers have been the source of SO MUCH wasted time I couldn't help myself.
  13. Good going! I've no idea what program or hardware could be causing Windows to need to shut down, hope someone else knows how to troubleshoot that.
  14. At least there are arguments for legalization. And they are all weak, self-serving and easily refuted. Semi-related, a "vegetarian" cooking show I've seen a few times uses Hemp seeds in almost everything. No point, I just thought it was interesting.
  15. Win '98 was actually pretty sophisticated about automatically installing drivers for hardware that it supports. I just replaced my DVD-ROM and when I started Windows it just said "Building Driver Database," Windows finished booting and that was all there was to it. It ran perfectly with no effort on my part because that particular hardware was in the Windows '98 driver database. If Windows could not install the driver for your card you have to supply the driver, and the driver has to support Windows '98. A driver file should fit on a floppy, so you got something else in there (or a defective

Because of the way they work disc brakes should take less , not more pedal travel. Could be the effect of the smaller-than-OEM master cylinder, or an air bubble that'll hopefully work its way out.
  17. I agree that possession of small amounts should not send anyone to prison (and the amount that DOES automatically send you to prison is set ridiculously small). I don't agree that there IS such a thing as "personal use" since, unless everyone who wants some is capable of growing exactly the amount they need, no more, no less, other people MUST be involved. Anyway, as I already said, we don't need additional intoxicating drugs to be readily available, no matter how it's done.
  18. Didn't watch the video but still have thoughts on the issue: I don't believe there is any need to legalize additional intoxicating drugs. Every argument I've heard "for" has been weak, self-serving, and quite easily refuted.
  19. If you have to buy ANYTHING AT ALL you're still gonna be hit by tax increases since they'll be passed on through higher prices for everything. But I get your point. I'm of an age that won't be severely affected by the eventual collapse of Social(ist) Security, so fixing that problem, for me at least, is academic. -----

Try working on your car when it's below zero. I gave that %$# up a LONG time ago! Don't wear out your pads on the first day!
  21. ... The radio. Currently Jesus Jones, Personal Jesus. Related Story: Buying this CD was the first time I encountered a snooty record store clerk (the snooty record store clerk has since become a cliche). I commented something-or-other while purchasing the CD and the clerk said something to the effect of, "I used to listen to Jesus Jones, before they sold out and become popular." Well, thanks for the useless personal information there Bucky.
  22. Why on Earth would the color of his skin make any difference in how people feel about his proposals? I simply CANNOT get used to people thinking the color of his skin is an issue.
  23. If the card didn't exist while '98 was current then it's possible no one bothered to write a driver for that particular combination. I'd recommend going to the manufacturer's site (the card) to see if they have a driver specifically for Windows '98. If they don't support it any driver you use may not "speak the same language" as '98 and may not work, or may cause constant problems. If there is no driver, anywhere, specifically for '98, then that hardware probably won't work with '98. I use '98 and just don't install anything that isn't compatible -- I either have to find an older solution th
  24. Define, "bad." Actually, for the first time in a long time, everything's running South of us. Looks nasty, and like it'll last a while. Stay safe ya'll!
