  1. Hello Folks

    1) Is daily scanning for spyware an important factor in the lifespan of a computer (in terms of adding "wear and tear" to the hard drive, etc...)?

    2) Is a spyware scanning product that is a "resource hog", using constant surges of 80-90%

CPU usage significantly more "wear and tear" on my computer than one with a light footprint?

    3) Will scanning once a week (compared to once a day) significantly lengthen the lifetime of a computer???

I'm running SpyBot, Kaspersky AV with realtime monitor, AVG (the Ewido version- on demand only), AdAware, Spy Sweeper, Spy Blaster, Spyware Guard...

Most of what I catch is spy cookies...one system monitor in 4years of running...haven't caught a virus yet. In the past I've used the computer for a few hours per day, but lately sometimes for 8 or more hours per day. Without these tools my system DID slow way down, so I do use them regularly.

I've googled a bit on the lifespan question but haven't really seen much- any opinions??

    Thanks

    Ashwin

I only scan once a week. Never have any problems. I also have Dish Network with 4 of the old style DishPlayers. (Like TIVO). I put in a 130GB HD in my wifes system so she and my grandson can record programs off the TV. They record and delete programs by the hundreds monthly and Still Pause, Rewind and fast forward all the time. That hard drive is running fine. SO no, I don't think it effects the Hard drive at all to run SpyBot and the others.

  2. You could go back and un-tweak can't you? Running the Internet and games just doesn't work out on any machine. If it were a on-line game then it's ok, but to surf and run a game is going to cause problems. How many things do you have running on the system? Try Code Stuff Starter and stop unwanted programs from running. There are some exceptions though and you could ask if they can be stopped or not. The Windows key isn't made for switching back and forth from a game to the Internet. At least I would never do that. If it is games you want to play, play them. If you want the Internet use it. If you had a dual processor maybe.

Thank you Lefty for your response. Apparently an 0x000000F4 means a crucial thread or process was stopped, therefore the computer crashed. It says there are many specific causes, and it best resolved with a thorough history of the problem. I only get the Stop message when I try to install the Catalyst Control center after an error occurred while trying to uninstall an older version. The drivers were successfully updated.

Have you tried to install the old version? Try that and if it does install then install the new version without trying to uninstall the old version. Some programs install over the top of their older versions without a problem. They then just replce the old version and you end up with just one.

  4. Hi,

I tried to uninstall the version of ATI video card drivers I had installed and the Catalyst Control Center (I believe it was version 6-8) so I could install the newest update (6-11). I used the cat-uninstaller.exe that ATI used to provide on their site. However, there was a problem when it tried to uninstall the Catalyst Control Center. It gave the following error:

    ERROR 1905: Module C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\atiamaxx.dll failed to unregister. HRESULT -2147220472

I checked my Add or Remove Programs list and noted that the Control Center was no longer there. I proceeded to install the new ATI drivers along with the new Control Center. However, when it comes to installing the Control Center, I get a BSOD and the following stop error:

    STOP 0x000000F4 (0x00000003, 0x8A4C14D8, 0x8A4C164C, 0x80604450)

The drivers were successfully installed, but not the Control Center.

    Here are my computer specs.:

Windows XP Professional SP2 (all updates)

    Abit IC7-G

    ATI Radeon 9800 Pro

    Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS

    Aspire 500W Power Supply

    Maxtor 160GB IDE HDD

    2x 1GB OCZ Platinum DDR400

There hasn't been any new hardware addition in the last 6 months.

    I appreciate any help.

  5. Does anyone have an idea about how many albums will fit on a CD? One of my winter projects is to burn all my old albums. My kids keep asking me what I want for Christmas, so I figured I'd let them get them.

    Thanks

    Mark

If you convert the songs to MP3's you can get about 200-300 songs on one 700MB Cd. But if you just want to run the Cd's off your regular Cd player, you could get about 16 or 18 songs on a CD maybe more.

  6. Yea, I am going to hold out until the 20th since that is the last day I downloaded anything. I went through my files and found IE7, FireFox 2.0 and 1.5(1.5 is better) , Windows Defender, the 61 updates from Microsoft, The 138 small files from the game site, Nero updates, HP updates and a bunch of other misc. files. They add up fast and when you first get a faster service (at least I did) you tend to use it for what it is worth. I have calmed down a little and will try and wait it out. The usage went down 716 MB since yesterday.

So maybe by the 20th. I will be back to having the service I am paying for. Your right, I don't want to mess with my credit after getting it to where it is at today, near 700 on the credit scores. Thanks for setting your calming hooks on me.

  7. I went over the limit of 12,000 in one month, according to them. I did reformat my hard drive and had 61 updates from Windows Xp, I downloaded IE7, and then got on a site that allowed unlimited downloads of old Abandonware and shareware games and downloaded about 800 MB.

Just yesterday, I was looking for a car and went to a few sites that had some pictures of cars I was interested in and then downloaded my 2 e-mails(all text) and ended up adding another 500 MB of downloads to my service. How in the H#ll can that happen? I am calling my bank today and see if I can stop them from withdrawing payments form my account. Then I am calling WildBlue and canceling this crap of a service.

I live in an area of about 20 homes and there is no way anyone is locking into my service from outside and stealing it. Those 20 homes cover over 10 acres.

  8. This is the worst service anyone could use. I thought AOL was bad, but WildBlue takes the cake. It has a running 30 day Bandwidth that you can't go over or they slow your service down to a snails pace. I am going to get my Dial-up back and use it while I pay for Wildblue for the next 11 months. I signed a contract that was gone over with me and never was there the mention of a bandwidth restriction. Viewing web pages that have pictures on them is part of the downloads your accounted for. So in short, everything on the web counts against your downloading. So be ware and steer clear!

  9. WildBlue likes to point to other things when all is not working smoothly. I think they refresh their IP's like every 24 hours, don't remember exactly.

I would make a backup of the router config. Do this by going into the firmware page and back up. Reset the router to defaults either through the router interface or with a pin to the reset button on the back.

Linksys usually ships routers to plug and go. Meaning it should revert to DHCP and allow the connection.

    What model and version?

    M

Did a live chat with a Linksys tech person the other day and found out a lot of things. The one thing is that this was already set at DHCP Dynamic. Wildblue is the worst service I have had. I would go back to Dial-up if I didn't have a 1 year obligation with WB. Once this service obligation is over I will go back to dial-up. I never heard of Bandwidth limitations and so now my service has been slowed down to slower than Dial-up. I paid a fee to download on a web site which has a ton of old games that are either Shareware, Abandon ware or freeware and had downloaded for 3 days and found Wildblue cut my speed on the service. It's one of those things they don't tell you about until it's too late. It is a 30 day running bandwidth which has a limit on downloads and uploads and includes any video you watch and any e-mails you download.

  10. you can manually check the setting by accessing the router through the web interface. Type this address into your address bar

    192.168.1.1

for the user name enter: user

for the password enter: admin (this is the default password)

on the home page you should see your settings to use dhcp for both your wan and lan.

Can't see anything about using Dynamic settings? Only Static is listed and I looked in all the tabs above.

  11. the default settings for the router are to use dhcp. You could just reset it with the pinhole in the back.

    edit added later//

before you follow that advice, you may want to be a little more specific to your problem. I may giving you faulty advice(based on the limited amount of info given)

WildBlue told me I needed to change the Linksys Router DHCP settings from Static to Dynamic settings.

  12. Trillian certain types of streaming media played in both Firefox and IE (only WMP format plays) Steam chat and some others I cant remember off the top of my head.

Have you checked you Sounds and Audio device Properties in the Control Panel? Under Audio make sure there isn't a check mark on "USE ONLY DEFAULT DEVICES". Other than that and the settings in IE and or FireFox I just don't know.

  13. Hello, I have a Sony PCV-RS320 and lately my audio hasnt been working on certain things. The only things the audio works on are Winamp, Windows Media Player, and VLC... it doesnt work when I try to watch streaming movies online (that dont use WMP, such as Youtube), Trillian, and Steam. I tried reinstalling the original audio drivers from the Sony support site. I dont think there have been any driver updates.

Could be a setting in your IE or Firefox whichever you use. Look in your Tools, Internet Options then Advanced under multimedia.

  14. My computer keeps freezing completely. No response from Ctrl + Alt + Del. I can't even turn Num Lock on and off. It just halts 100%.

I have no idea why this is happening.

    No error logs or messages

    It happens at random times.

    No new hardware

    No viruses/spyware

Haven't changed any settings in months.

    :(

Could be from heat, bad memory or software installed. When is the last time you cleaned out the inside of the case? Have you installed any new software? You can try checking the memory by testing it or trying another known good chip in the first slot. memtest86.com has a memory tester for free.

  15. I just upgraded my athlon xp 2600 to an athlon 64 x2 4200(dual core). In all honesty, I probably won't notice a huge difference from my old system. For some things it will be nice. I liked the idea of the 6150 onboard video. That will be good until I am able to upgrade to a dedicated video card. I paid $210 for the proc and asus board(nforce4 chipset). My friend took great care of it.

That will be a nice improvement. Get the best graphics card you can afford. Or save up and get one you can't afford.
