  1. Hiya everybody!! I was wondering how I would go about setting up my MySpace IM? I was able to get the /home/******/Desktop/MSIMClientSetup.1.0.366.0.msi on my desktop but that's as far as I got. If someone would be kind enough to tell me how to do this, I'd greatly appreciate it. And you know me I'm a step-by-step chick so any info would do me some justice. Thx

Doesn't MySpace have a help section for new users?

  2. Will appreciate anyone's time...

Here and there I have heard of security problems with paypal

but don't know if it really affected customers.

Can anyone tell me if Paypal is safe to use now?

I guess it is still used on ebay, but I don't know

anything about ebay other than what it is.

I would like to use Paypal to donate to

programs that I have used and just wanted to

make sure it is still safe.

    Thanks very much! nancy

I have used Paypal over 60 times. Never a problem.

  3. As rhema7 was saying most of what your seeing is just noise and should be of no concern. What your People Pc software is doing is just reporting more of this crap doesn't mean any other software wouldn't see it just other software doesn't report it to you.

As for FTP sites trying to contact your computer are you sure it isn't software just looking for regular updates?

Could be the software updates, not sure. here is an example of what I see.

4.227.136.207 is attempting to access your Computer on port 445.

This connection will be blocked in 50 secounds.

    Apply Every time

    Block Allow

And the Apply every time is a box I can check. And then Either Block or Allow is the choice.

  4. I used to be able to right click on any icon or folder in Windows, choose Properties and have a window with three tabs:

    General

    Customize

    and

    Summary

I do not know what I did, but now when I right click and choose properties, I only have two tabs:

    General

    and

    Summary

    No more customize tab.

How can I get back the option to customize? My Windows updates are all current.

    Thanks,

All I have ever seen was General, Sharing and Customize. You only get the Customize function if it is a folder. Not when it is a File. You can't customize a file.

  5. I have PeoplePc's Internet security running on my system. I just had to reinstall everything on this system and now when I get on-line, I have a bunch of sites trying to access my system. I have the choice of blocking or allowing them to access my system. I click on the Apply every time and then block them. Is this something new that hackers are doing? I have every update from Windows Update and run Spy Bot S&D, Ad aware, Spywareblaster, Avg and the Internet security system from People PC. I do get a few Cookies and Some Coolweb Search problems found from these programs. Oh and I also run CWShredder with nothing showing up from it. Any Ideas, or do I just keep blocking these guys? I had 4 of them while typing this message.

  6. If you have the Google Toolbar check to see if it's popup blocker is stopping the links from opening in a new window. Also try right clicking on the link(s) and select open in new window.

Thats what I was trying to do. Right click doesn't/didn't show any function for "Open in New Window".

Medab1 gave me a link that works just like the old function that is missing so I will just use that for now.

    Thanks for all your help.

You could go to the registry & rename it,"Open In New Window" or whatever,But it really isn't worth the effort.

    It works as is.:)

I thought about it and went into the Regedit and was going to rename it,but it works as is and does what I wanted. I just wish I knew what caused the old function to be removed.

  8. I think this link might help--

I just downloaded & merged the reg file & it works.

When you download it,right click it & choose "Merge".

Click OK on the security prompt.

Now when you click on Favorites & right click a link the option to open it in a new window is available.

    See picture--

    http://i6.tinypic.com/1zf3afm.jpg

That works but isn't the same looking function as before. But if it works it works. Thanks.

  9. Try running sfc /scannow.

There is a space between the c & the /.

Type it in the RUN box & click OK.

You may need the xp CD or recovery disk if it prompts you for it.

Gave System File Checker a try with no luck either. Also uninstalled and rebooted to reinstall with no luck.

    Still lost on this one.

  10. I searched this subject and couldn't find the fix. My Ie 6 lost it's function to Open in a new window. It works for folders but not on just a favorite that is not in a folder in favorites. When I use the open new window from with in a fold of favorites it open a box that has all the favorites listed and then I have to pick from them. It worked fine the other day but now the function is gone when using the links. I searched Kelly's Corner and found some similar functions but none of them helped. Any ideas?

    Thanks as always. <===Lefty===

  11. Besides bad power supply or heat due to dust buildup I would say to check Device Manager for video problems. The driver may be corrupted or the video (onboard?) is going bad.

Thanks for the reply, I will call him today and have his wife check out the driver. He wont touch the PC.

And Bozodog, they don't install any games they just use what came with the PC. Defrag isn't necessary, but I will have them dump the cookies and temp files while I have them on the phone. They live in Denver and I live on the Western Slope of Colorado or I wouldn't have had to post a message. I can usually fix a PC if it is in front of me, but it's not as easy when I can't tinker with it.

Well when I said it wasn't necessary I meant they never install anything and if they have pictures on the PC they came from with an e-mail which they don't get often. A check disk was already run as they restarted the PC after the crash. This has Windows Me on it and so it showed them as not shutting down properly and it ran Scan disk on the drive while it rebooted.I haven't heard from them since yesterday.

  13. My friends PC has just locked up twice in the last 2 days. First time his wife was playing Spider Solitaire when the screen just went black and nothing would turn it off other than the 8 second power button. Second time she was on Map Quest typing and it did the same thing. I am thinking either the power supply is going bad or it is just dirty inside causing a heat problem. It is an older E-machines with about a 800Mhz CPU. Nothing added to the machine lately and no power outages going on. Just all of a sudden started this. Any other ideas? Thanks in advance.

  14. Try this registry hack

it was always 2 downloads for me. Try Firefox too. It lets you download more than 2 or 3 without tweaks. You really won't get your downlaods much faster anyway the more files you download at once the slower each downloads, or at least that's my experience.

Following your link I can't find this line."MaxConnectionsPerServer dword 32 MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server dword 32 " Is this line just added to the end of the list on the right?

Is this a new key or string value? It isn't clear on what to do!

  15. Be sure to clean out your temp files and recycle bin. Also do your scans in safe mode. IE can be very vunerable. Do you have all the updated patches? What about "IE spyad" SpyWareBlaster and SpyWareGuard?

    What about your firewall?

Running Adaware,SpyBot S&D,AVG and Spywareblaster. She doesnt have a Firewall going. I fixed all the viruses and Adware and spyware and now all she is getting is 2 pop ups that she just has to X out of. No more Virus. I am pretty sure we have all the services shut down that should be as in Telnet,Web and FTP.

  16. My daughter went to a HTML help site yesterday and as soon as she did a popup came up and told her it needed to install something on her system. She hit the red X and then it installed Trojans onto her system. It also installed several adware and spyware programs including Mira,Virtual score,Bookedspace and some others. I got rid of the viruses and all the Adware and spyware. I went to symantec for the instructions for removal and then one by one removed them. The system is clean until she gets on-line. As soon as she does, more Viruses pop up and AVG spots them and we delete them but it doesn't stop. Could it be attached to Internet explorer? What would cause this? Thanks in advance.

  17. Use KillDisk to completely wipe the drive.

Found my biggest problem was the Bios was changed to many times that when I went back and put it at the default settings all the symptoms went away. I has a Seagate Diagnostic Cd and a Maxtor Floppy diagnostic disk. After reading about Magnetic Data Tech uses old drives and refurbish them I tried the Maxtor with no luck and then tried the Seagate and it worked fine.

  18. Everest should give you the drive information. It would be under Storage > ATA.

Thanks for the replies guys. The drive has 85 viruses on it and I am just trying to format it and install another OS. I haven't got it installed in another good working PC, just in the PC it came from so there isn't anyway to get Everest nor any other programs installed on the drive to test it. It was in the middle of installing XP that it just keeps on rebooting and giving me errors that XP converts to files. Xp isn't fulling installed so it keeps trying to reinstall. I remove the partitions and start over again with the same results. It gives me 5 different Stop errors and mostly state there was a problem with the hardware or software that was recently installed. Also says to turn off Shadowing and caching in BIOS which makes no difference. It had XP installed before and now talks about new Hardware and software which is the same as before. Could a Virus cause damage to the PC itself? I changed the setting in BIOS and sometimes they change on there own back to caching.

  19. Hi guys and gals

I am working on a remote computer that has Symantec Corporate edition installed (not sure which version, I think it's 10)

There is a server group in there that we could no longer unlock. It said that the password is incorrect, but I know it isn't

So we just installed a new server group.

    This was several months ago.

I was in there today trying to figure out how to delete the old group without the password to no avail.

There is a tool called iforgot.exe that shows the encrypted password, and you are supposed to contact support and have them decrypt it for you. For a huge fee

Upon running this program and Googling to no avail, suddenly the new server group is not accepting the password!

Does anyone know how, short of uninstalling, I can reset the password? I've looked in the registry and can't find any stored passwords.

I've been through google and Symantecs site to no avail. I'm hoping to find someone that had the same problem

    EDIT

    Just found this

    http://blog.thedevins.com/archives/000426.php

That value is in my registry, so the password 'symantec' unlocked my last server group, but not the old one I was trying to delete in the first place.

    I'll keep plugging...

Using that same Registry entry, is there anything else called Password or pssw or psw? Look for something else in that same area with a password abbreviation.

  20. Are many of you who do computer repair A+ certified?

do many of you make your living doing computer repair?

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Self taught here also. My son-in-law however is A+ certified and he is always asking me for advice on repairs and fixes. I have used PC's since the early 80's and started out with a TI99 4a and then had both a 8088 and 8086 machines before setting up to my first 386. Wow what a rush!
