  1. Hey guys

Iv been freezing up when trying to play games or anything graphic intensive. I looked in computer management and it seems I am getting an error called IC2 Return error. I have the latest driver updates too. Might this be a overheating issue?

When is the last time you cleaned out the inside of the case? Can of AIR!

  2. Thanks, Terrorist. Good point.

Talked to her ISP, and they assurred me that they didn't block messages.

I was able to go her server, though, and found that for some reason the

messages never got there. At least I know for sure it's not her

computer because I was really stumped.

    Thanks to you both!

Sounds like you mom's friend doesn't have the correct e-mail address for your mom. Make sure she is sending it to the correct address.

  3. This is general information purposes for those that have a Compaq Presario SR1012NX.

My son's new computer suddenly lost internet connection. Other computer was fine.

Tried the repair feature in Wxp, but it did not help.

Called Compaq and after speaking with several people in India, finally got someone who understood what we were saying and was able to give us technical help to solve the problem.

Apparently the unit builds up a static charge, for some reason, inside the unit and has to be discharged.

He had us unplug the unit from the power source and then hold down the power button for 30 seconds. and then plug the power back up. It then connected to the internet without any problems.

He said this was something that happens and you have to discharge the static electricity.

This is the first time we have ever had any problems with static electricity.

Has anybody else had this problem? If not, maybe this will help someone if they ever do.

Does the machine sit on carpet? Is it dry in your area? Does you kid run around in the house in his socks? Static electricity. Ground it like mentioned above. A wire from the fan screw to the screw on the wall plug will do it.

  4. It is a HP Pavillion 423.uk

I emailed HP and they have replied with the following:

The current CPU is an Intel Celeron Williamette 1.8. I can upgrade to a Williamette 2.0

Any idea if there is a noticeable difference between the two speeds or should I not bother?

    Many thanks.

You wont see any difference. You would be better off reformatting your hard drive and reinstalling your Windows XP. That will speed it up more than anything else. After having you system for a while it tends to slow down from just installing and uninstalling programs. Do you Defrag your hard drive on a regular basis? IS your XP on a partition on your Hard drive like say D:? If so you just need to restart the machine and when you see the HP splash screen just hit F1,F2 or F10 which ever it says for system restore. Do you have HP System recovery file under PC Help and Tools? That is where you would do this also.

  5. I just swithed to FireFox and found it lacks some of IE's easy swithes. I used to go to Tools, Internet Options and then Multimedia and turn off Sounds, Video and Animations. How do you do that with FireFox? I cna't find it anywhere. Or do I just do that from IE and it works for Firefox? Help please if you can.

  6. What does the time on the PC say? Could be a old CMOS battery. Might also try Run sfc /scannow

Could be the battery, considering the age of the system it deserves to be the battery, but no other problems have cropped up (at least, none as unusual or severe as having to reload system resource drivers). As for the modem not connecting (which I'm not sure could be related to the battery) I just chose to leave it on for now.

Remind me, is that SFC the program that scans for corrupt or missing files? If it's what I think it is its usefullness is rather limited on a system that's been up and running for this long. SO many files have been replaced over the years it's difficult to know which ones should be restored and which should be left alone, or wheter replacing one file might cause another to fail. I've been down that road before and don't wish to revisit it.

sfc Checks Windows System files and replaces or fixes the ones that are corrupted or missing.

AS for the Modem not working some of the times and does other times, My brother-in-law had the same problem and it turned out to be the PCI slot it was in. I moved it to another slot and it worked fine from then on. You might reinstall the drivers for the modem also.

  7. The temptation would be to great. I would have to see :-)

I know what you mean, but it means pulling out the system, risking loosening something in the back, etc. Plus the original mouse was a fancy-schmancy gift (silver-plated) that had seen better days. I just have to get used to the system's original mouse again (it's a clickety-clackity kind, the gift one was silent). Click! Click! Clickety-Click! Rattle-rumble! (The wheel.)

Today the DSL modem would not connect again -- Took three tries before it worked. Something's up. Let's see, I'm catching up on my bills, so it must be time to replace the computer! Of course!

What does the time on the PC say? Could be a old CMOS battery. Might also try Run sfc /scannow

  8. My modem is loosing the connection after about 8 or 9 hours. Its the second time i've seen it happen. How can I fix this problem without calling my ISP?

I have a SMC router connected to the modem. XP Pro

If you are using Dial-up and it disconnects you might try setting your E-mail program to check for e-mail every 5 minutes or so. As long as the ISP goes, they will disconnect you if there isn't any activity on the line for any period of time. If your on-line for 8-9 hours at a time, I would think you needed a break anyway.

  9. Maybe just windows being windows???

I accidentally clicked the wireless button my laptop and so i got disconnected. I attempted to reconnect only to get the message "Not connected".. However I am online right now

The "FREE X" is FREE XBOX 360.. pop up..so calm down

Picture attached... any ideas guys? Just a glitch...

Just curious if this has happened to anyone

Windows can and will do this. Best thing to do is Reboot.

  10. Try removing it in Safe Mode.

I finally got it removed. Had to go to MSconfig and remove the entries for it in Services. Then it deleted and was able to remove it from ADD Remove Programs . Now I am trying to install it again and I think Grisoft just doesn't want to give it away for free anymore. I tried Downloading it and the program stopped and said the server was reset so the download would not finish. Then I tried to Run it from their site and it did the same thing. Server reset.

Update, I got it to install from their site finally. I guess removing it from the Msconfig did it.

  11. I reformatted my drive the other day and reinstalled everything. I had AVG on my back up drive and tried to install it. It told me that the copy was out dated and I needed to download the new version. I went to Grisoft and tried to download 7.5 and it gave me errors(CRC) while uncompacting the Dat files. SO I tried deleting the saved file and tried to just run the file from Grisoft. It did the same thing CRC errors. Anyone here have the same problem? I was going to try to uninstall the program from ADD remove Programs and it gives me an error that it was not installed correctly. Now it is in the Add Remove programs and I can't get it out of there. I then tried to delete the Program files from the C:\Program Files\Grisoft and it won't let me delete them. It told me Access denied Make sure the disk isn't full or write protected and that the file is not in use.

  12. My daughter installed Firefox and now her Internet Explorer doesn't work any more. She also downloaded and installed IE7 and it doesn't work. Did Firefox cause this?

No, in all likelyhood IE7 is freezing at the connecting when launched.

After install IE7 wants to connect to a MSN server which will guide you through setting up your preferences for the new features it has.

Unfortunately there are several things which will block this from happening.

So the first thing to do is go to control panel => add/remove programs and select "Windows Internet Explorer 7 " from the list (from the programs list , not from the windows components list) this will roll you back to IE6

Now If you have spybot teatimer, you will want to go into its blocked sites list and make sure that the msn redirect is not listed.

Then disable teatimer, your antivirus, and any registry locking software. In fact disable anything that you think could interfere.

I have also seen an instance where the Yahoo toolbar interfered; so you may want to uninstall any toolbars you have .

    Then download and install IE7.

Restart when done and again kill your antivirus and teatimer etc before launching IE7 and letting it go to the msn setup page.

After you configure it , you can restart and leave things as normal.

Pete, IE6 stopped working after she installed Firefox. I will check and see what Anti Virus and if she has any toolbars running. Will go ahead and uninstall IE7 and then try reinstalling it after I disable those other programs. Will get back to you and let you know. Thanks.

  13. Ok I have 2 Pc's I am trying to network together. I had 2 other PC's hooked up with this hub a few years ago and can't get these two to hook up. I have the Main PC hooked to the Uplink connection on the hub and the other PC hooked up to the #1 port. I go to Network and Internet connections and select Set up or change your Home or small office Network. It steps me through and finishes with no items showing in My network connections. I am at a lost of whats going on. I try running the set up on the other Pc and it doesn't show anything either. First PC has XP Home and the other has XP Media Center.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

  14. Update!

After a day of trouble shooting I just reformatted the drive and reinstalled. Runs fine now.

I did learn one thing in case you might want to take a note of it.

Earth link(includes PeoplePC) Toolbars with the Pop-up blocker stopped me from using the Windows Update.Even after I reinstalled most everything I couldn't get on. I e-mailed Microsoft and they told me about the Pop-up blockers and some other things like Norton that causes errors. I disabled the pop-up blocker and it works.

  15. I just remembered I downloaded 5 updates on the 12th. That is when I first got my problems. Should I remove those updates?

Might be worth removing them, rebooting, and then download/reinstall them again. You might have gotten a bad or partial install of one of the files.

The only thing is, I can't use the update site.

Note: other symptoms are: If I don't log on right away to the PC it defaults to a screen I never seen before and I have to log off when I never logged on before I get the correct screen to log on. Then It looks like the old shut down or restart screen when I try to shut down. What I mean by that is it looks like the pull down screen that Win98 has and not the 3 buttons to choose from. When I try to log onto the Net, my log on screen gives me an error. ANd then it wants to send the error to Microsoft. The program I log on with is called Bartshell.exe

  16. have you been to start- control panel-sys-automatic updates

and see if updates are turned on to auto

    or turned off

    marty

Yes I checked it out from the control panel under Security Center. It is on but if I click on it, it does nothing, no option to change it. Looks like I need to reinstall everything once again. I am thinking the Grand Kids did something, so I might as well Restore the whole system.

  17. My PC wouldn't shut off the other night and now it won't allow me to go to Windows upadate to get new updates. It gives me an error about the web site. I tried checking my Automatic updates and it won't load. My PeoplePC program will connect to the internet but the main screen gets an error and closes. I can still use the internet by loading IE. I have AVG updated and ran it in Safe mode. I tried SFC /scanonce and scannow. I haven't downloaded anything for over a year. Nothing installed that I know of. Grand kids might have. Last week of so I got about 8 updates with no problem. I tried system restore and went back a week with no luck. Any Ideas?
