  1. I am trying to help someone over the phone to restore their PC to it's orig anal condition. I went to F11 and when the screen comes up it asks for the Restore CD #1. She puts it in and the PC doesn't do what it is supposed to do. She has 2 Drives. A CD Rom and A Cd/DVD and we tried both with no luck. I had her go into Bios and set it to boot from CD ROM First and that saved but when the PC reboots it gives her 2 choices. 1. Restore Windows Millennium or 2. DOS command Prompt.

Why would her PC have Millennium as a choice when it came with XP in the first place? Anyway we tried both drives again and picked Millennium and still nothing.

The disk does say Restore Disk 1 bootable on it. SHe gets an error every time we try that says Wrong System.(Millennium) I am guessing it is looking for. She bought this PC new with XP. I am at a loss.

Ok I just had her go through it again from the Start All Programs and it did the same thing.

She just happened to say something about Restore CD Version 3.0 I asked her where she saw that and it was on the screen. SO I had her look at the CD and it said Restore CD version 1.5 I think that is the problem and somehow they put the wrong disks in the box. I told her to contact Emachines and see if they will send out the Version 3.0.

  2. Bummer.

What happens if I try and load the 64 bit on to a HDD , then register?

Will Microsoft inform me that the reg key is already being used and I need to decide which one to keep?

Already spent way too much money on this build.

Never done it before, but I would think if you install the 64 Bit version the Key code will be asked for and the same key should work but you will never be able to do any updates for it. Why not just install the 64 Bit instead? Maybe you can install it on another partition on that same PC.

Like I said not sure but someone will know.

  3. When you tried booting to the CD, did you first change bios boot order to include CD and then press the any key when prompted to press any key to boot to CD?

Yes I tried all the above. Yes, I did add new hardware a big diff, the mobo. However, it was as close to the old as it could be. The other C: works fine. However, you did get me thinking. I had a sound card in the old configuration. I took it out because the new mobo should have that working. The other C: may have predated the sound failure on the mobo. I can't remember. The sound was the first thing to go maybe a year and 1/2 ago. Every few months a drive or USB port would die. I had plenty of both. It wasn't till it was clear that the erosion of utility wasn't going to stop that I replaced it. I did not notice any erosion for at least 6 months after I put in a sound card.

I guess I will put the sound card back in and see what happens.

I used to scan with Malwarebites weely just as routine. I would find a virus every now and then. The scan after the problem was clean.

If you just changed the Motherboard and now can't boot, that is the problem. You can't change hardware like that and expect Windows to boot. If you put the old MB back in it will boot again. Windows looks for the hardware that it was first installed with. If it isn't right it wont boot. SO the choice is Old MB or format and install again.

  4. The computer will boot but not log in even safe mode.

I tried to use the CD to fix it in install/-repair mode but it did not recognise it as 'right' I can't remember the term. I ran a check disk and I did fix something but that did not help.

I have a spare C:. Booting from that, the old C: is accessable as any other disk.

I booted with a boot log. It got to the resourse loop and then it died.

Any idea what the problem might be?

I REALLY do not want to format the disk! That was the only solution given on another, less expert forum. I will only do that after I buy another disk and transfer everything to the new disk. I am hoping something small is 'snarled'.

Did you use Administrators access to log in? Did you recently install something new? If so go into safe mode and remove it from Add/Remove. If you use administrators access and still can't log in it could be a virus. How about using Last known Good configuration?

  5. Done all that Let me explain I view a webpage I'm going to save it. I go file - "Save as" - open the documents file that has various sub folders with various different headings I've tried saving as web page comlete and as htm only. The pages save ok where they r supposed to but next time the wife uses or goes looking for pictures/photos in the windows photo gallery there are all these random images from web sites all through them, in seemingly random scaterings. . . .any ideas how to sop it happening.

What you might try is Save As then open Documents. On the right side right click and choose New Folder. Name the folder Web Pages, enter and then open it then Save Web pages there.

  6. I view a web page - i decide to save it to my documents folders. . .trouble is every picture on the saved page ends up in the main Pictures folder and is causing arguments in the family. . . Is this some sort of DMR type thing? sorta spreading things around the computer making things harder to "pirate " perhaps?? Is there some around this short of saving all my down loaded pages to a pen drive / flash drive

When you go to save a picture or Web page use the save as and then pick where you want to save it to. Just need to give it a name.

  7. Dell wont boot

Hi new here and thanks in advance, ok i think i picked up a virus and did an abrupt shut down last time on, a virus checking thing came on the screen I never seen before and I just shut it down......now it wont re-boot. just a dark blank screen after a 2 sec. dell screen appears. I have tried to recover using the system recover disk and booting it straight from the recover disk under recover option but it asks me for a administration code or password. I have no idea the code . I went in security and entered a new code and have tried that new code and it says not the right code. So I cannot boot off the restore disk and I do not want to lose my file if I do a complete reinstall ( if that wouyld even work ). it wants to run the recovery disk but I don't know the code and have reset the security code to 1234 but it doesn't recognize it or that security code that I changed has nothing to do with it. HELP! thanks, Bob.

Have you tried to boot into Safe Mode? Tapping the F8 key while it is booting. Once you get there choose Safe Mode and once booted try to do a System restore back to a date prier to the infection. Say a week of so. If you never had a security code then hitting enter when asked for one should get you past that part. If none of this helps come back and ask for more help.

  8. Most likely, you wont have to do anything. as soon as you install the card, it will automatically disable the onboard video.

if you get real adventurous, you could throw in a fast dual core proc for about $60

I'm falling behind. I remember once I had to change the jumper on the mother board and then the next time I just had to disable the on board and now I guess it is automatic. Progress. Sure is totally different from my first 300 Baud modem and 8086. Before that it was the TI-994a. And before that was the Arari 400 then the 800XL.

  9. Hi everyone newbie here i barley have any knowledge regarding techie things...My question may be a bit complicated maybe not for you guys pretty much i got a computer about a year ago with an integrated graphics card it was for work related things so it was cheap and effective now about a year later i have gotten more into pc gameing so having this quite well pathetic graphics card is horrible for pc gameing so i am looking to upgrade the only problem is can i install a new graphics card into this computer even though it has an integrated graphics card?. I opened up my computer and saw there was an empty graphics card slot but im still not sure any help would be appreciated here is a list of my specs allso if i am able to get a new card any suggestions? i have a budget of around 120$ thanks for all the help!

Not sure about your PC but, once you install the new card you might have to change a jumper on the motherboard to allow the card to over ride the on-board graphics. If you put it in and it doesn't work come back for help.

You most likely will just have to change the BIOS settings now that I think about it. There will be a setting to disable the on-board graphics.

  10. hi team i have this flatbed scanner

    a usb microtek

win 7 could not find drivers

i hunted all up and down the net for em

    i tran fered the scanner

    to a machine with winxppro

and it found the driver at boot up and set every thing up with out my help

can some one tell me why the difference between the two sys

my opinion wind 7 is a piece of of commercialised bullshit

and the atrangest thing it finds most drivers

    compatable to microsoft

    and have forgotten

    users who have other

    com[ponent hardware

    any offers

Did you try a compatibility mode on that scanner. Right click on the file and set the Compatibility to XP.

  11. Leaving my computer on for long periods of time - even when I'm not using it - I'd like to know if there is a way that I can tell the computer to de-fragment itself every so often so that I don't have to worry about doing so when I actually need to use the computer. How can I do this?

Are you running Windows 7? If you right click on C: and then Properties then tools you wil see Defragment Now. Open that and then at the top it says Configure Schedule. Set it up for Weekly Daily or Monthly. Monthly would be best but only if you add and remove a lot of programs. It doesn't Fragment when you are not adding programs, other than the Word or Notepad files and Picture and Music files.

  12. Answer i found to be correct:

a classless routing protocol is one which does contain the subnet address in the packet header

a classfull routing protocol does not contain the subnet mask in the packet header

some examples of a classless protocol are:

RIPv2, eigrp, ospf, is-is and bgp

a clasfull protocol would be RIPv1

classfull protocols do not support VLSM (variable length subnet mask)

I feel special. Well I just used Search and got lucky.

  13. Heres a little quick theoretical question: This might get confusing but try and follow

I have 2 1TB external drives. Each external drive has a USB and an eSATA port. Now my new Dell XPS has 4 USB 3.0 slots and a USB2.0/eSATA combo port. I am trying to copy large amounts of data from one drive to the other. What I started to do was plug one external HDD in via eSATA and the other in USB 3.0( at 2.0 speeds however) and copy. But what happened is that i copied at USB speeds because one drive was eSATA and the other was USB.

Now my question is this: Is it possible for me to plug the 2 drives in together via eSATA directly...and initiate the copy from my PC? because since they both have eSATA AND USB i could plug eSATA directly too each of the drives, and then each USB in my computer. If i initiate the copy will it travel through the USB or the direct eSATA conection?

    Hum...

I'm not positive but even back in the 90's people would daisy chain Sata drives. I think it will work.

  14. Better turn off your updates for AVG or your PC will not boot. I fixed mine by System restore and then turning off AVG updates right away. Best thing to do is Restore and then While it is rebooting turn off your Internet Router or how ever you connect so it doesn't update as soon as you get internet access.

System Repair would not even fix this.

  15. Anyone know how to set up Windows to allow for hibernation?

In my opinion Hibernation causes problems. Just ask the guy that lost his Notepad files.

Depends on which windows you have but it is under the Power Options features. Windows 7/Control Panel/Hardware and Sound/Power Options. Change when the Computer Sleeps/Change Advanced Power Savings/Double Click on Sleep/ Click on Allow Hybrid Sleep and make sure it is set to on/Click on Hibernate After and set time. Save Changes and your done.

I never use it. The cost is so minimal it just isn't worth it.

  16. Hi everyone, I am hoping someone can make sense of this . I know there is something on my computer, but spybot and CA Security center and CounterSpy all fail to find anything wrong. IE will not close when I click the x or right click to close or anything, it just dings at me when I press the exit button. I have to open task manager every single time to close IE now. Also, the opened tabs will not close. And some other funny stuff has been happening. What should I do?

Oh, the tab key no longer works to switch fields when fillings out forms online. None of this ever happened a couple weeks ago, but since then it has.

    Thank you for your time.

    Kilitan

Have you tried rebooting the PC? Try that first. Did you install anything new before this happened?

  17. What if I shut my computer off, and booted it through a CD or a memory key or something like that, copied the hiberfil.sys file to another location, say on the memory key or something, turned it back on and hibernated it, and while it was hibernated I went into my computer again and replaced the hiberfil.sys with the original one and turned it back on- Would something like that work?

No. Your just going to have to redo those notepad files you lost.

  18. greetings!

again im back and with another question.. :)

i have windows 7 on my laptop ASUS K4J0IJ Series

my problem is that everytime i start it up, i just get to the point wher it says "starting windows" then i get the mouse icon on a black screen and that's it..it will restart on itself until it starts up normally! so in essence i just have to wait for as long as 30mins to 1 hour until it gets to start normally on itself!!

    drivers looks fine.

    any ideas? thanks!

does restarts indicate hard ware problems

Sure can martymas ,Bad memory PS or just having something external attached can cause a lot of problems.
