I understand the reasoning for doing it - and maybe someday when this is a very large community that will need to be enforced, but for the most part, the members here aren't logging in to spam up a bulletin board. They just want to find answers or converse with fellow tech fans. So yay to B for leaving off the 'minute wait' feature for now!

Hey folks... I'm debating the idea of upgrading to XP SP2 sometime soon (Windows Update hasn't prompted me it's downloaded yet despite the fact I'm on broadband, so maybe it'll just take a while) and I want to make sure I have my bases covered in case there's a problem. Now, yes, I'm aware I should have been backing up LONG before this - it kept being on my "to-do" list, but I never really researched what goes into a proper back-up. So, that's why I'm picking everyones' brains now. I'm using Roxio's burning software (came with my HP laptop, and I can't remember what it's called), and I am jus

I have trouble just keeping up with 4, Nerelda...hehehe....more power to you if you can keep up with that many!!

I've noticed that a lot of folks on here have done their homework, flatiron__2 - we're in the presence of some folks who truly know their stuff. I love being in good communities like that. I only hope I can add to the collective at times.

Tips and Tricks for some safe modding of the OS would be cool... I like playing with Windows and making it unique and my own, but I don't want it to be a dangerous thing either. There are some fun tools I've found that are pretty safe (won't make Windows unusable, in other words) like Windowblinds, object dock, etc. Might be neat if there are some folks who know how to do some neat things with those kinds of programs to have a place to pass on their expertise.

Thanks for the post flatiron__2. As an avid Firefox enthusiast, I will enjoy surfing on those links and the stuff the sites have beyond that too. I think this will be very helpful to lots of people...The extensions are a nice start towards tweaking Firefox, but I had no idea so much more could be done with them until this week. Excellent!!

I don't think the post count really matters on other boards, cowsgonemadd3, but if you're in the SWI classroom, then that's just as good as being in TC's classroom. Just stick with the training and then you'll be qualified to look through these HJT logs that I'm sure we'll start getting eventually too. I can't wait until I have gotten through it...some of the stuff is a bit tough to learn, but I'm working at it. I'll get there eventually.

You can become an HJT trained anti-malware person by going to Tom Coyote's site and following the links to apply to be a classmember. I'm going through the program right now (slow though it might be for me with work and all). I think B is going to pick the Mods himself and not take input from the posters (which is fine by me - it's his board and he knows the people well enough). So, just sit back and if he decides to contact you about it, I guess he will. Until then, enjoy the surfing...

I asked this on the G4TTV board, but I'll throw it out here too just in case it got lost in the cartoons over there..... If a person doesn't use IE at all (yay Firefox!), doesn't use the Windows Firewall because they have a third party solution that works better and is current and up-to-date on all the other Windows Updates, is there even a NEED to update to SP2? Is there going to be a problem updating using Windows Update further on down the road if you disregard SP2? I just have heard so many problems caused by this that I'm a bit apprehensive about losing my laptop. I would take the pro

I can't remember the exact URL of the site, but there's a guy who responds to SPAM emails (which this TOTALLY is by the way) and baits the Spammers on in some way or another. He's extremely funny - anyone remember the link? I can't remember. But, yeah....ignore it.

Yes, congrats Damoochr - I'll look forward to reading your posts and getting your input on everything. In between all the late night feedings and sleepless nights, of course..lol.

Sp2 Firewall, Turned Off By 3rd Party Installs
WiredMonkey replied to bozodog's topic in Security Alerts
That's exactly my worry with it, B. Hopefully it will be kept under wraps until they can develop a patch for the exploit that can be run off it, cause I'm sure it won't be long.....*sigh* -
I Miss Ttv Board's Style Reply Button

That would be a great way to do it. Would definitely give the poster more control in a quicker fashion of what they wanted posted. But, I'm quite happy with this board's system too. -

You can edit out parts of a post on the G4TTV board too, but it is definitely more intensive and requires more work than doing it on this style of board. I enjoy editing posts and posting in general on Invision PB boards much more than the one over at G4TTV. -
Sp2 Firewall, Turned Off By 3rd Party Installs
WiredMonkey replied to bozodog's topic in Security Alerts
Nice.... Makes you wonder if they can use that feature, how long will be before the malware buttmunches learn how to do it and do the same type of thing with their own software. Ugh. -
Thanks for the update flatiron__2! Have you heard anything about the planned changes for the 1.0 release?

Hi Marsh, I'm not sure what the date and numbers you are giving us refer to, but if it's your download speed being 106 mb/sec, then it's a bit slow for broadband. But, satellite tends to be from what I've hard. It's the only alternative for some folks that aren't in a cable or dsl area, and it's better than dial-up. But yes, I have a feeling you will be lagging slightly behind some other broadband users. No problem though - you seem to keep up just fine...

Thanks for the link tashi - I read a similar posting on the G4TTV boards, though the list was much longer. Are they actually fixing problems, or is this another type of list entirely? hehehe....thx again.

I had a friend update hers on XP Home to SP2 yesterday without my knowledge. I told her I would have given her some pointers if she felt like she had to do it. But, she didn't back stuff up beforehand, etc. So, after downloading it and restarting it she says it was really, really slow - just like I've read on other boards. And now it's having trouble getting online and all kinds of other things. I've had her go to the firewall and make sure it has access, and she says it does, but I need to see the computer in person to make sure she is doing it right. It's all kinds of screwy. Definite

I agree with what Nerelda has said - I'm a part of the HJT Classrooms over at TC right now (though I'm going a bit slow cause I'm doing it all at work), and having one place where the experts go is good. But, I do like that there are a LOT of people whose opinion I value at this board...

Very, very, VERY cool...ESPECIALLY since I just got back on high-speed access. 'Scuse me while I do a dance of joy. Thanks for the link B....hope everyone is enjoying these too!

I figured (since I read in one of the posts that B is a fan of the CFH show) that I would start off a topic regarding the new show. Do we have any Canadian posters in this forum who have seen the new CFH in Canada? Or perhaps a few lucky folks with satellite dishes that have caught it? I've read some of the show notes, and it does indeed seem similar to the CFH we knew and loved. ...and miss.... Chime in here and lets get some discussions going!

So maybe, like, "Computer-Emergency Red"? or "Virus Green"? hehehe...
