  1. How do you do this? When I boot up, I don't even see a boot screen, it happens so fast.

Try pounding constantly on whatever key takes you to the BIOS from the moment you hit the power switch. Might take a few tries, but you should get in eventually.

(Assuming you can get into the BIOS on your machine. Nothing surprises me anymore.)

    Thanks!

  2. I found this article on how to do this. With what little bit of information it gave me, and a LOT of trial and error, I finally figured it out.

I know I burned, and erased, that CD a dozen times. So I decided to write this little tutorial, in plain English, in case anybody else wanted to try it. Hopefully this will alleviate some of the problems I had.

I thought this would be handy to have, in case you had to work on somebody's computer, where the browser has crashed (IE, maybe?). They don't even have to have Firefox installed, for it to work.

With this disk, it's just like you have the same Firefox that you use at home, including all your preferences, and bookmarks. (As a matter of fact, I'm using the CD to make this post.)

This works with Windows XP. I don't know about any other OS. If anybody tries this out on another OS, please post back and let us know if it worked, or not, and on what OS.

Hopefully, this will be helpful to somebody, cause it sure was a headache. Good luck!

Before starting you have to enable the viewing of hidden files and folders. You can fin out how to do that HERE.

    Optional:

Temporarily disable the disk cache, to reduce the amounts of file writes to the removable storage.

This can be done by entering "about:config" (without quotes) in the address field of Firefox, and hit "Enter".

    Scroll down to, "browser.cache.disk.enable".

    Right click it.

    Choose "Modify".

    Set value to "false".

When finished, change it back to "true"

    File size: 71.4MB

    Running Firefox from removable media:

    STEP 1

First make 2 new folders. It doesn't matter where, so long as you remember, where. Name them:

    Firefox

    FFProfile

    STEP 2

Double click My Computer / C: / Program Files / Mozilla Firefox /

COPY everything in this folder, to the "Firefox" folder you just created.

    STEP 3

Double click My Computer / C: / Documents and Settings / your user name / Application Data / Phoenix / Profiles / your user name /

Here you will have a file named, using a series of numbers and letters. Double click that, and COPY everything in there to the "FFProfile" folder you just created.

    OR

Some people don't have the Phoenix folder. I think it's a holdover from the days of Firebird, since your profile folder isn't deleted when you un-install the program. I compared the Mozilla folder to the Firefox folder, and they were basically the same. So, I burned the Mozilla files, and it also worked.

    From Application Data / Mozilla / Firefox / Profiles / (mine's called) default.7dp /

COPY everything in there to the "FFProfile" folder you just created.

    STEP 4

Create a simple batch file with the following line in it:

    start \Firefox\firefox.exe -profile \FFProfile

NOTE: To create the batch file:

    Open Notepad

    Type in the line above

Click File / Save As... / under "File name:", name it Firefox.bat / browse to where you made your 2 new folders / Save

    STEP 5

Burn the 2 folders, and .bat file, to a CD.

NOTE:I tried using DeepBurner to burn the files, didn't work. (One of the headaches, I encountered.)

What I ended up doing was highliting the files, then on the left, I choose "Copy this folder", and sent it to my burner.

That's the only way I could get it to work.

    To use it:

Insert CD / open "Firefox" folder / double click Firefox.exe

On my computer, it takes a little while for Firefox to open up (approx 1 min.), but eventually it will. I guess it takes a while, to read all those files.

  3. ..... We are just trying to keep things going here. This WILL be a very good place.

Most of us right now, have a good idea about computers. And those that don't are here to learn what they can. We have had some very good questions so far for help. But those are few and far between as of yet.

We will need more people looking for help to find there way here to BestTechies, before we have to worry about those that are just out for a post count.

As now, we have a very good list of those from the old TTV days. With a wealth of information. And a good start at one fine support forum. But we all will need to find ways to get the word out about this fine place.

I for one don't want to see BestTechies slow down and just become lost in the shuffle. We have lost way to many others to the four winds at the ending of TechTV. .....

On another board I belong to, the Admin asked if anyone would be willing to contribute their graphic skills, by making some banners for his site, that friends have offered to put on their sites. The members would then post their attempts, and get suggestions from the other members. Some, nice banners, came out of that little experiment.

I thought this was a pretty good idea. The members got to show off their graphics skills, and the Admin got some banners, that could be used on websites, to link to the board.

Many of the members then put them up on their personal sites.

A good way to advertise the Besttechie site. A couple of his request:

    • Different banners (a wide variety of sizes and shapes)
    • People can see the banner and know what type of site we are (a support site and what they can gain from coming here)

Then he took those banners, and put them on a page with link instructions.

    Win, Win.

    Just a thought.

  4. I've been using that extension since Firebird 0.7, if I remember right.

It's also the only extension I have. I use it several times a day. That's how I check for MS updates.

IE is my default browser, but the only time I use it, is when I right click in Firefox, and select "View This Page In IE".

    A must have extension.

    Great suggestion, MistaMatt90.

  6. A little info:

For years now, scientists have been warning that global warming is likely to lead to an increase in freak weather conditions, with more floods, cyclones and droughts. They have predicted an upsurge in mosquito-borne illnesses such as malaria and extinction of plant and animal species because of habitat destruction. What is significant about the new reports, however, is the degree of certainty about the extent of global warming and its impact. The draft Geneva report gave a regional breakdown of what may lie ahead. Africa: Grain yields are expected to decrease, and there will be less water available. Desertification will be worsened by reductions in average annual rainfall, especially in southern, North and West Africa. Coastal settlements in Nigeria, Senegal, Gambia, Egypt and along the East-Southern African coast will be hit by rising sea levels and coastal erosion. Asia: High temperatures, drought, floods and soil degradation likely will diminish food production in arid and tropical parts of Asia. Northern areas may see an increase in productivity. Rises in the sea level and more intense tropical cyclones likely will displace tens of millions of people in low-lying coastal areas of temperate and tropical Asia. Europe: Southern Europe will become more prone to drought. In other areas, flood hazards will increase. Half of Alpine glaciers could disappear by the end of the 21st century. Heat waves may change traditional summer tourist destinations and less reliable snow conditions may hurt winter tourism. Agricultural productivity may increase in northern Europe, but decrease in southern Europe. Latin America: Floods and droughts will become more frequent. Yields of important crops likely will decrease in many parts of Latin America. Subsistence farming in northeastern Brazil could be threatened. Exposure to diseases such as malaria and cholera likely will increase. North America: Food production could benefit from modest warming, but there will be strong regional effects like declines in Canada's Prairies and the U.S. Great Plains. Sea level rises could increase coastal erosion, flooding and lead to more storm surges, particularly in Florida and the Atlantic coast. Diseases like malaria, dengue fever and lyme disease may expand their ranges in North America and there likely will be more heat-related deaths. Polar: Climate change in polar regions is expected to be among the largest anywhere on Earth. Already, the extent and thickness of Arctic sea ice have decreased, permafrost has thawed and the distribution and abundance of species has been effected. The trends may continue even long after greenhouse gas stabilizations are stabilized and cause irreversible impact on ice sheets, global ocean circulation and sea levels. Small island states: A projected sea level rise of two tenths of an inch per year for the next 100 years will increase coastal erosion, damage to ecosystems, loss of land and dislocation of people. Coral reefs will be damaged and fisheries harmed. Tourism an important source of income likely will face severe disruption from climate change and sea level rise.
  7. what can you do.when the strongest force in the universe is comming at you

    marty

    Dig Deep! LOL

I think it's, more or less, just mama natures cycle. Sometimes there are several storms a year, sometimes hardly any.

Might be something to the global warming thing, too. In the past couple of yrs., I doubt we've had 10 days where the temp reached, or droped below, 32. We haven't even had any 100 degree days, this year. Very unusual.

  8. ... FWIW, when I'm working on the BIOS on my Thinkpad I turn on all the RAM checks and boot diagnostics to delay the boot process at POST. Makes it much easier to get back into the BIOS when you have a 5 or 10 second window while the machine counts its memory. Also makes it's easier to get discs in or out of the CD drive before the machine tries to boot. The normal delay is so short that the tray barely has time to open before it starts to boot.

How do you do this? When I boot up, I don't even see a boot screen, it happens so fast.

  9. Cows,

It never, totally, died out. Went up through Alabama, then turned east, went off-shore, turned south (by this time it was just a low pressure area), got off the east coast of Florida, turned west, cut across Florida into the Gulf of Mexico, followed the coast about 100 miles off-shore, started strengthening yesterday (9/23), expected to hit near Galveston, Texas, and drop a lot of rain on southern LA and TX.

    Nah. It ain't dead yet.

    handplane,

Looks like were in for a lot of rain today. Looks like it's already raining in your area. We'll catch it later this morning. They are predicting 5+ inches here. Average stormy day for around here. We sure need the rain. That 5 inches will be soaked up as soon as it hits the ground. We haven't had a good rain in 2-3 months.

  10. Neat little program.
