  1. I use direcway. Not sure how to fix your problem, but I can tell you what my settings are in IE, and Firefox:

    Firefox:

Tools / Options / General / in the Connection box; Connection Settings... button

    Manual proxy configuration is checked

    HTTP Proxy: 127.0.0.1 Port 83

    Socks V5 is checked

    No Proxy for: localhost, 127.0.0.1

    IE ;

Tools / Internet Options / Connections

    under Connections, I have nothing

    click LAN Settings... button

    In the Proxy server box;

Use a proxy server for your LAN is checked

Bypass proxy server for local addresses is checked

Don't know if this will be of any help, but it's all I've got.

  2. Sharing as an FYI ... Please never apply security updates by email as it's likely to be virus infected. All vendors require downloads from their website to ensure safety and never distribute patches by email.

    Fake Redhat Security Advisory Circulating

    http://www.redhat.com/security/

    http://isc.sans.org//diary.php?date=2004-10-24

23rd October 2004 -- Red Hat has been made aware that emails are circulating that pretend to come from the Red Hat Security Team. These emails tell users to download and run an update from a users home directory. This fake update appears to contain malicious code. Official messages from the Red Hat security team are never sent unsolicited, are always sent from the address [email protected], and are digitally signed by GPG. All official updates for Red Hat products are digitally signed and should not be installed unless they are correctly signed and the signature is verified.

  3. Wasn't sure where to post this, but here goes.

I got this on another board, and thought it might be of interest to Linux users:

Five recent advisories by Secunia are noted below. Please patch once updates become available.

    CUPS Multiple Integer Overflow Vulnerabilities

    MODERATELY CRTICAL

    http://secunia.com/advisories/12921/

Successful exploitation may potentially allow execution of arbitrary code with the privileges of the print spooler, when a specially crafted PDF document is printed.

    Xpdf Multiple Integer Overflow Vulnerabilities

    HIGHLY CRITICAL

    http://secunia.com/advisories/12917/

The vulnerabilities are caused due to some unspecified integer overflow errors, which potentially can be exploited to execute arbitrary code when a specially crafted PDF document is viewed.

    Linux Kernel Multiple Vulnerabilities

    LESS CRITICAL

    http://secunia.com/advisories/12525/

Multiple vulnerabilities have been reported in the Linux kernel, which can be exploited to disclose kernel data, cause a DoS (Denial of Service), or bypass certain security restrictions.

Linux Kernel Terminal Subsystem Race Condition Vulnerabilities

    LESS CRITICAL

    http://secunia.com/advisories/12951/

Two vulnerabilities have been reported in the Linux kernel, which can be exploited to potentially disclose kernel data or cause a DoS (Denial of Service).

    LinuxStat "template" Directory Traversal Vulnerability

    MODERATELY CRITICAL

    http://secunia.com/advisories/12963/

A vulnerability has been reported in LinuxStat, which can be exploited by malicious people to disclose sensitive information.

  4. I'm using 2002, but you got me curious. Just got a Automatic Update today, but went and checked with Live Update.

The following updates have been found:

    > LiveReg, 1934.6 KB

    > Symantec Redirector, 1468.3 KB

    Total Download 3402.9 KB

It disabled my E-mail scanning, Automatic Update, and my web connection.

Rebooted and everything is back to "normal", for now.

    Thanks for the heads-up, thesidekickcat.

  5. Thanks Nerelda,

I've got another program to add to the list of SP2 glitches. I recently upgraded my work computer to SP2, it went well. I've noticed something odd about Symantec's Corporate version of Antivirus. After the upgrade the AV program worked just fine. However, windows no longer knows the program exists on my computer, that is, I can't set the program to automatically run at a specific time. I can still run an AV scan of my computer manually.

With SP2, there seems to be a lot of problems with Norton, and Zone Alarm, in the articles I've been reading. People seem to be having the same problem, you are, with Norton.

    Here's a couple of things I found:
