If your friends computer was that infected, I suggest you post a HijackThis log to be examined.
There're some things Ad-aware and Spybot, alone, can't remove.
Instructions for running a log can be found here:
Posting A Correct Hijackthis Log
Once you have the log, start a new topic in this forum, and some one will help you:
Follow all of their instructions carefully.
Once your log has been cleaned, they will instruct you on how to reduce the chances of further infection.

You should give Firefox a try.
I've been using it since it was Firebird v0.7 (over 3 yrs), without a single problem.
If you don't like it, or it causes problems, you can always uninstall it (that's easy).
Any problems I've heard of with Firefox, were easily fixed.

I have mine set as all 3, hide when inactive, always hide, always show, and they all work as they're supposed to.
Have you tried a reboot?
