since asus offers the no crash bios update feature, I should update it. I don't have much to lose.
-
you may want to try updating and installing the package again. Use these commands sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get install realplayer

Thanks for checking :-) I installed everest, it shows the same temp as my asus probe software. My bios temp is still reading 10 - 15 higher.
-
you guys mention your temps, but maybe your bios software temp may also read 15 degrees higher. Their is still the question, which is the real temp.

That is a great idea. I have two of those systems, one running linux, and the other running windows. first off, if possible, use ethernet to connect the two via a router. I am not sure how you would do that with usb. Also the older computer with usb, is probably just usb 1.1, which is very slow. With VNC you are send your desktop to another computer and control it remotely. Are you hoping to send your games over usb(or ethernet) to the larger tv, if so I do not think that will work, thier may be to much lag. what is the processor speed of the 98 machine? I would reccomend putting linux on i

no, but wouldn't that be similar to the asus software I am already using? I wonder why their is a 15 degree difference beteen the readings my bio give and the asus software.

athlon xp 2600. I am sure I can get it cooler, but was more curious to what the real cpu temerature is.
-
just curious, what do you plan to use the server for? Even if it is just to play, you need some sort of task for it to do.
-
I got you beat in that area. I just started using the computer in November of 2002(day after thanksgiving day sale). I took to it like an obsession.

According to my bios hardware moniter my cpu temp is 76 degrees C. According to my asus probe software my cpu temp is 61 degrees C. Do you think the hardware moniter that is in my bios menu more accurate? I do realize those temps are high, I am more curious to what the real temp is. If it is 76C, I need to get it lower, if it is just 61C, I am doing fine.

Are you saying some DFI motherboards do not require SATA drivers to be loaded to install XP to a SATA drive?
-
Wow Hitest, that caught me offgard, seems a tab out of character :-) I like it :-)
-
Thanks. I have always been a little annoyed by the lack of knowing what I sent.

If you ever need to find drivers for an odd computer. You may have luck googling the motherboard model. Then you can get drivers from the motherboard sight. If that does not turn up any good results. Go to the source, the chipset makers, they have drivers available for all of their chipsets. Most all computers use just a few different chipsets made by the following(among others): sis, via, intel. One of the easiest ways to get detailed information on the chipset your computer is using, is to boot a linux cd, then run the command "lspci" . It will list info like this. This is from my computer

As previously said, it sound like you may have a hardware conflict. I would still try and install one more time. after installing using your sp1 disk, then install sp2 with this package http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...45-9e368d3cdb5a Then I would start installing drivers afterwords.

I will have to remember that

it is probably even easier then memory. I feel comfortable inside a machine. I guess I just try not to mess with the hardware if not needed. I have done several motherboard replacments for desktops. These required modifing the connecters to make everything work. The only hardware job I shy away from would be laptop repairs. I do not have the patience to take one apart(if the job came, I would probably take it). Other then something simple like replacing the harddrive, I am hesitiant to take the job.

I knew someone would say that. I was doing this for sombody else. I try to do my best to stay out of the machines I work on. I am always worried I will somehow break something. I returned the computer today. They were happy windows is running smootly and they have sound again. Minus the little yellow "?" in the device manager, everything is running perfect.
-
have already did that still no luck. As long as that "PCI card" device is the modem, I do not see it being a problem. I know this computer is only used with a cable modem using usb.

I am reinstalling windows 98 se. The mother board is a p6set-ml , this is made my ecs. I have all of the drivers installed except this one, it is showing up in the device manager under other devices/ PCI Card. I am not sure if this is really even nessesary or what piece of hardware it is for. Any help would be appreciated. I have installed the modem drivers, and ide chipset dirvers, amoung sound and video. edit added// my hunch is it is the pci modem card that is plugged in. I maybe have not completely installed them.
-
thanks, that worked. I must have been in 30 different computer BIOs menus before. I don't believe I never came accross this. edit added// until now, I had no idea their was a pageup or pagedown key.

I am trying to change some setting in the bios. For one, I need to change the boot order. I also need to disable onboard audio. I am able to navagate around to the differnt settings using the arrow keys, but I am not able to change any of the settings. edit added// I think the bios may be screwed up.
-
I am feeling really dumb right now. I am not able to change any of the settings in this award bios. It says PU/PD/+/- : modify I have tried "+", "-", "<ctrl>+", "<ctrol>-", "<shift>+", "<shift>-" none of the above actions will change the settings. Am I missing something real obvious? I am feeling really incompetent

you used that twice, I am pretty sure the "O" is for "old" , the only thing I can think of the "L" meaning is "lady" . What does "OL" mean?

I have used a weber charcoal grill most of my life. I thought that was the TRUE way to grill. My mother and father in-law bought us a gas grill last spring, I love it(I'm a convert). It makes cooking so easy, and the food still tastes good and smokey.
