pci may be much slower then agp, but is the transfere rate the bottle neck? I have a hunch that a pci and agp version of the 5200 will perform similar.
-
I am no gamer, but the 5200 will do a lot better then onboard, it should make a huge difference.

I like gentoo linux, even some of the self-righteous gentoo users :-) Obviously it is not a good choice for a new linux user, but it serves many people well. wasn't BSD ports taken from gentoos portage j/k :-) you will find them everywhere :-)

is this correct. Normally when you boot into ubuntu you go directly into a gui, but this last time you booted directly into a command line? you could try to run the command gdm, this may start your login manager, if it does not, what errors does it output?

Home Network Windows Xp Pro/home Help!
shanenin replied to L0u1s_Wu's topic in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP
what do you mean when you say speak, like instant message? what way do you need to communicate between them? -
I am guessing you mean like a batch script, batch makes me want to pull my hair out, so I wrote one in python. i am not exacty sure if this is what you need, but my script will do this. If you run the script from inside the folder "BASE" it will change any .gif file found in each of the sub folders to the name you specify in the variable "new_name". Warning . If you have more then one gif per folder it delete all but that last gif. you will need to install python to run the script #!/usr/bin/env python import os # enter the new name you want your gifs changed to below new_name = "enter-na

one way you could rule out it being an OS(windows) problem would be to try running knoppix for a while. If it is a hardware issue it should do the same with knoppix also.

is it the same program that is locking it up?

just curious, were you try the suggestions from this link? http://www.besttechie.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=5563

you will need something to burn an iso. Nero would be my first thought. A good free alternative is cdburn.exe, it is a command line app that burns iso images. it is part of the windows server 2003 resource kit, this also works for XP http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&displaylang=en

If you are going to use a live cd, you may as well use your good hardware. Since you are experimenting on an older unit, i would reccomend installing a distro. An installed version will run better(faster) then a live version

they both have their advantages and disagvantages. I spent quite a bit of time yesterday looking for changes in my registry and fixing them because I got a virus somehow. I did not enjoy WASTING time looking for traces of crap on my system. This forum in particular helps people decifer log files so people can revmove spyware from their system, some people may concider that a pain in the arse. I use windows every day, it is pretty well polished, it has some great software that runs on it, but it stresses me out. When I use my linux box I feel at peace, even if some of my programs are buggy. To

assumbing bittorent was the problem, I soved that by using my linux box for all of my file sharing needs. I should have done this a long time ago.

I have a questin about the entries the symantec guide gives. Below is an except I do not have all of thes keys, do you think I am supposed to add a key?

I came to my computer this morning totell me norton removed a virus/worm http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcen...pybot.worm.html according to the document this is spread thru kazaa. I do not even use kazaa. The only file trading I was doing was uploading "star trek voyager" using bittorrent. I am not even sure if bittotrrent was the way I got this. I always assumbed it was fairly safe to use bittorrent to download avi files, i have never had any problem in the past.

If you use freevo, I encorperated the cropit program into the interface. Now you are able to crop your avi files directly through the freevo interface, no other computer needed. I wish I could say my python skills are strong(getting better), but I mainly just copied an example I found on the web. I am trying to upload the pluginn to the freevo sight, but have had some trouble logging on, as of now you can find it here http://webpages.charter.net/lindbergfamily...crop-0.1.tar.gz

I personally do not have any problem with it. I find it kind of amusing.

Walmart Notebook ( Black Friday )
shanenin replied to inferiormeansme's topic in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP
what can't a low-end notebook do? I suppose it would suck with gaming, and maybe a little slow with video editing, but other then that it would be great. -
I was referring to me breaking stuff :-)
-
computer os's are meant to be broke on occasion, thats how you learn. I do dumb(impulsive) stuff all the time :-)

I Was Wondering If This Was A Good Deal
shanenin replied to REMIX_23's topic in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP
nero recode is great for converting dvd(mpeg2) to mpeg4 video. It does a WONDERFUL job at compressing. -
shows you what I know. I did not even know people made a seperate partition for a pagefile. I doubt you get much of a perfomance gain, especially if you have plenty of ram already.

Bestbuy also has a great deal, but they say the store only has 10 availbale. I have NO DESIRE to fight with other people to grab one of the 10. That kind of stress and negativity is not needed in my life. I am guessing walmart will have more then 10, I think that will not be a such a bad situation(I hope). I have my alarm set for 4:30, so I am at walmart before 5:00. This is not like me to do something so extreme, but I would really like to come home with a laptop :-)
