Ah thanks! Just make the destination Null! That's what I was thinking, just didn't know how to do that. Thanks, Matt

Thanks TT. I am aware that there is a way to alter this so that rather than moving the file, it deletes on reboot. It uses the same key and everything. Any info on that? Matt

Most AVs update themselves, and daily, no work on your part. This can also be set to do automatically. Again, most update automatically on their own. This is true, many AS programs require you to manually update. However, it doesn't take very long and I don't find it that big of a hassle.Disk cleanup and Defrag (especially defrag) can become very tedious. I don't run those as often as you do, for that reason. A lot of software will update it self automatically. For the ones that don't, well, updating them yourself is just part of the computer experience.

Im trying to add the PendingFileRenameOperations value (type REG_MULTI_SZ) to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager so that I can move/delete specified files on reboot. I understand the syntax needed: Line 1 contains: \??\<Drive:>\<SourcePath>\SourceFileName.Extension Line 2 contains: !\??\<Drive:>\<DestinationPath>\DestinationFileName.Extension What I don't know is what type of value PendingFileRenameOperations needs to be. MultiString Value? Is that what "REG_MULTI_SZ" indicates? Thanks, Matt

Everyone whos ever been interested in Linux has heard how much safer and more secure it is than Windows. My question is why? What makes Linux so much safer? What securities do you have running as a normal user verses running as root? Is there anything that would actually stop a piece of malware from running undetected on a Linux machine? These are a few questions that I've been wondering for a while. What actually stops a process from running in the background without the user's knowlege? Is it just that malware isn't written for Linux yet? Hitest and I were discussing this a little in

There are still ways to get infected via Firefox.

Your post strains credibility actually. Hmm.. I actually once cleared 17 gigs from a temp folder..

Ewido and SpySweeper are two very good commercial programs. However, in both I believe, after the trial is over, you can no longer receive updates (and depending on where you downloaded SpySweeper, it won't even clean any more - just detect). Spybot and adAware were good in their time, but don't do much with modern infections. Windows Defender aka MSAS gets mixed reviews. From what I've seen, it does about the same as AdAware or Spybot. Here's the speach I usually give a person after their log is clean: Note: I don't mention paid software below. -------------------------------------------

I haven't run a scan in ages.. I do use ATF-Cleaner every once in a while to get rid of Temp stuff. If I ever suspect malware, I do manual cleaning, however, that isn't reccomended for users who don't know what they're doing. AVG updates daily, but I don't do manual system scan unless I suspect an issue. I do a lot of Jotti Scans though, for files I find (on mostly my sister's account) tha I don't recognize. Oh ya.. I do back up my music daily.

Hi TheTrueDarkOne. I have no idea why your log sat here for so long with no reply. If you are still having issues, please do a new HJT can and post a new log. Once again, I am very sorry for the wait. Matt

Right now, if your hardware doesn't change, you can put XP back on with no issues (usually)

Hmmm.. interesting. Maybe like a sub forum of Open Chat called something like "The Cafe"? I know at least a music area would grab the attention of many members. I certainly would like to post about CDs, music, bands etc I find interesting.

Woah - digging up a year old thread! Anyhow, I was successfully in installing Ubuntu that time around (long time ago), but I didn't have to do the steps you outlined, 12lostcause12. Thanks for the input however. Matt

Congrats! Your log is clean! How is your system running? The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again. Firefox- Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera is good as well. Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section tha
