KeithLDick
I just read a 6.3 Earthquake just hit Christchurch...http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/303899
Pete_C
Just saw some footage on CNN.The devastation in ChristChurch looks pretty extensive, almost as bad as Haiti was. They say the Guiness building collapsed, the hospital had to be evacuated, and the city has run out of ambulances.

marsh_0x
Hi Keith, thanks for the post.I have been seeing live unedited feeds coming out of Christchurch via the big dish, blooded people getting out of the city in pure panic, not sure what will be edited for others to see ?More than 20 dead and will be many more, such devastation my friend. I tried to go to bed early (haha 1am) not a chance to sleep seeing the fear on peoples face running.I gotta stop watching raw feeds, but national news is all over this saying the center was only 3 miles from the city, sorry don't know the metric way in kilo , had to be very close to you.EDIT: I should have clicked Keith's link before reply, so sad. Pete_C
Didn't see much new stuff on the morning news, but they said that they had evacuated the center of the city.Funny how so many of their buildings sound like they are alcohol themed. The Forsyth Bar building, the Guiness building.....Sounds like they are blaming a combination of previous weakening from the preceeding earthquakes and the location of this one for all the destruction.Beer or no beer, I bet that in a year those kiwis will not be living in tent cities with streets clogged with rubble like the Haitians still are. marsh_0x
Funny how so many of their buildings sound like they are alcohol themed. The Forsyth Bar building, the Guiness building.....Hi Pete, Oh did I/we learn a lesson with Aussies coming out of the bush in Nam, nobody had a chance to drink one on one with them, beer was the preference. Some sort of built up tolerance, haha being 128# then and Aussie were much bigger in build.Never saw one hurl.I'm so troubled with the quake, maybe 300 are still buried, at least it's 73f there now, I'm at a happy 25f.Marsh

Pete_C
Good to hear you are okay Marty, I dropped you an emailI figured it was probably the devastation of the infrastructure (no power or internet) that was keeping you from posting earlier. This is interesting, they have a project (similar to Folding @ Home and Seti@Home) which uses the shock/motion sensors in some laptops to detect earthquakes.http://www.wbur.org/npr/126073353/your-laptop-could-detect-the-next-earthquakeThis sounds promising, enough people and they will get more data on quakes. They also can utilize servers since most hard drives they use have accelerometers built in.http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2010/09/disk-drives-earthquake-detection/Or maybe one of those home made simple seismometers connected to a big bellhttp://www.jochenlueg.freeuk.com/interface/quake.htmInteresting use of a couple old hard drives. If we had quakes in Texas worth paying attention to I would probably build one of these just for the fun of it.
