Fedora's free. Yep, Fedora's free. Great distro, the free version of Red Hat.

I understand that you are naming the easiest distros for a newbie to get along with, but I've tried Mandrake and SuSE 9.1 and here's what I've found out: it doesn't help you transition from Windows, it tries to be just like Windows. I don't even think SuSE came wtih gcc+. And I couldn't install ANYTHING (even using YaST2) because SuSE installs things in odd places so I'd get all kinds of errors (like not having x installed?). I've heard similar complaints about Suse before. My advice is geared towards someone just starting out with Linux. Not someone who's an experienced user. Mandrake, Fe

Probably a dumb question, but, have you set your CD ROM drive as the first bootable device?

Knoppix is a nice way to get your feet wet with Linux without installing anything to your hard drive or damaging your windows partition. If you like Linux and want to install it then I suggest an rpm distro like Fedora, Mandrake, or Suse would be good choices. These distros are simple to install, and network. If you do decide to install Linux I recommend that you first go to the website of the distro of your choice and check to make sure that your PC hardware is Linux compliant. Most distro websites have hardware compatibility lists. In other words ensure that your video card, modem, NIC,

Heh-heh, well said, tictoc5150 My C86 Epson isn't that expensive either. I took a chance when I bought the printer because it wasn't listed as being Linux compliant on the box. Also, the Epson website said it wasn't supported by Linux. But, auto-detection found the printer and "suggested" I use the C84 driver. I was also pleasantly surprised it worked.

I agree, it looks grim indeed especially when two of her private e-mail addresses bounced messages back to me.

Not inherently, but the drivers are, shall we say, not great. Also, it's quite old. Thanks, jcl That's good to know. later, hitest

Thanks for the link, jcl. Does the HP 882C have poor print quality?

For me the one drawback in Linux is that sometimes the hardware you have won't work with Linux. I've finally given the heave to my old Lexmark 2050 inkjet printer. I recently bought an Epson Stylus C86 it works well in Linux although I had to use the Epson C84 driver. What printer do you use in Linux? Maybe we can build a list of Linux friendly printers for Linux users.

I don't know thesidekickcat, Cris has been totally silent for months. This isn't like her. Even if she did move she wouldn't just stop talking to all of us, would she? It's the not knowing which really bugs me. I miss her a lot.

Hey macmarauder, A little update on chinawht, our friend. I just tried sending her an e-mail and the mail got bounced back to me. Her account has been cancelled. Not good news.
-
Hi macmarauder, Yes, I also don't like having Internet friends for the same reasons you mentioned. I also have not heard from chinawht. I have no idea what happened to her. I sent her e-mails and received no replies. She dropped off the face of the Earth. I hope she comes back one day.

I think it's okay to learn about tweaking software and figuring out how things work within the limits set out in law. However, if you want to learn how to do things that will get you arrested then this is not the right place to look. The term "hacking" has a negative tone to it and conjures up images of people doing nefarious things. Good luck in your quest for knowledge, but, stay legal.
