  1. I am wanting to make a bootable image of a machine. I will have the software I need installed on the machine and all up dates. The problem is that it will be too large for a cd, and I don't have a dvd-r on this machine. Does any one use an imaging program that will split the file or a burning program to do the same. I would like it to ask for cd 2 when the first is finished. I want my own oem cd so to speak for this machine.

Taking the time to install and update once will save me time in the future.

  2. I advise following that advice with just the router and then just the modem. This will give the IP's of each, you may note this for the future, sometime two devices are in the same range and will interfere with each other.

But if this is a modem from the phone company they should have a cd to run on your machine to configure everything on your pc. If you want to go from modem to router to pc then the out from the modem should go to the wan or internet of the router then from the lan of the router to the nic on the pc.

  3. Let's see.... Aluminum diamond plate, aluminum angle, drill, Sawzall, MIG welder....

    My thoughts also.

I know guys that made front and rear bumpers from pipe. They left a small hole in it, poured a couple quarts of oil into it then rolled the pipe around to get a good coating inside.

Or they would fill the pipe with cement.

  4. You want to convert the file before it is downloaded to your machine correct?

Say from a .avi to a .wmp file?

I don't know if this is possible without first downloading it to your computer then doing the conversion. I don't think I would allow something like this on my site. Someone sets the file to some off the wall extension then I would have to go in and replace it. It just does not sound like good practice on the part of the site to allow this.

    My opinion.

  5. Anyone using this tool?

I notice when doing a registry clean it will show say 800 entries, I can select all. It will drop this number down to something else. This is even when I special select only what is marked safe for removal. Anyone know or have ideas. It does not cause any problems but I do wonder why this happens.

  6. With mixed feelings - elated for the fact it is fixed, but dissapointed for the fact all that great research went to small use - I would like to inform you that it was a simple tweak in the BIOS.

Under the HDD settings somehow it had been set from RAID back to IDE.

Because i am running RAID 0 is was the BIOS unable to retrieve a complete MBR because it was striped over two disks and could only see one?

I also apologise for not putting up a detailed configuration of the system (the first thing i should've posted - an oversight i am well aware of), and more importantly that i was running RAID. This probably would have let some of you solve the problem sooner.

Thanks again for all your help.

I think all of has a story like this. For most of us it would be changing a setting and not making a note of it. The machine starts acting flakey and we are off to figure it out.

I would bet if something like this ever happened to you are some one you know you will point them to check that setting in the process to figure out the issue.

  7. I don't have a fix, but maybe some encouraging words for someone.

I came across a laptop with a registry error. After going to the MS KB I popped the Vista cd in and ran the memory test. All ok. Rebooted and ran the restore, not expecting much as this was my first experience with Vista restore. Well it ran, rebooted and now my boss has her laptop back with no missing files.

If the machine is a "Brand" machine like Dell or HP the tools to test the drive are usually on their recovery partition. But the website will have them as well.

Take one stick of ram out. Remove everything that is not needed to run the computer. then try the memory test again, with each stick. Unplug cd rom and floppy if you are not using them to run test from.

  8. I just came from the Blog page, haven't been there in forever, and all I see are male enhancement drugs under the updated blogs. Is someone trying to tell me something, or do I login to the blogs for it to disappear?

Either way the page was huge, no pun.

  9. Don't mention anything about the user whose name is an Apple Computer. He is known to have these guys around.

Have fun with them, bring them ICE cold coffee. Let your imagination run. Take the cones, put them in the neighbors drive way. Laxative brownies.....I had better stop.

  10. I am having a issue with Office 2003 being slow to load. Like nearly 60 seconds from click to load. It does not matter the size of the file or the location, local or network. Once it is open it appears to run snappy enough. I notice this with Excel and Word, have not checked Access as it is not used.

I cleaned msconfig and ran all the assorted cleaning tools. No virus/spyware.

    Comp is 2.4 P4 with 1G ram.

    Any suggestions?
