  1. I was checking out pricewatch to see how much a cpu upgrade would run. I have the Intel D845HV mobo and have 1.4 Ghz pcu.

    According to the manual (page 21) I can upgrade to a 2.0 400Mhz 256K Cache .... the problem is I can't find a mPGA 478pin 2.0Ghz 400Mhz 256K cpu the most I could find was the cpu with a 512K cache.

Can my mobo handle that?

    Thank you for your time.

  2. Many burners work better using PIO than they do DMA. That is why I keep stating that the drive needs to have DMA unchecked or the drive will either not be recognized or function properly. It can very well be why your drive isn't working. As you can now see Sony verified it. Follow the directions and try the drive.

I did as sony suggested with the controller (there are no dma/pio for the burners)and the drive still would not work. They confirmed it was DOA ..... now I'm senting it back to newegg. I'm going to take a chance and try for a replacement since most of the reviews for the drive were good. If that one doesn't work I'm going to get a refund.

  3. First i'd disconnect the power cable and IDE cable from your old drive and set the new drive as master, boot to bios and make sure it shows correctly then run the tests to determine if the drive is defective. If it turns out to test ok then you know it's your jumper and cable configuration you need to correct. If a return is needed then just call customer support at newegg, they'll set ya up with the RMA.

What do I look for in the bios? What section do I go to? I looked before and I saw nothing that gave information about either drive I have.

  4. I have exchanged motherboards with newegg that said
** This item is warranted through the product manufacturer only.

they have still exchanged them if they came DOA. I do not think they will give you any problem. From what I remember, I did have to get a RMA number from a live person. The automated system would not dispatch me one.

I'm sure they won't get me a problem with an exchange, but what concerns me ...... is this model a lemon? I read the reviews and most were good. I just hope it will work. I think I should have a choice though.

I wonder why they won't give a refund?

Anyway I talked with sony tech support this morning and was told the drive is defective. Then I got this email from another tech at sony.......

We will need to continue with some more troubleshooting steps.

First you will need to open up your Device Manager(go under your Start menu,

right click on My Computer, left click on Properties, and the Device Manager

should be a tab listed there)

    - Then click on the + next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers

    - You should have a Primary IDE Channel, Secondary IDE Channel, and a third

    controller(Intel or SIS or VIA)

    - Double click on the third controller, go under the Driver tab, click the

    Update Driver button

    - The Upgrade Device Driver window will open, click Next

    - Select "Display a List of the Known Drivers..." then click Next

    - Under "Model" select the Standard Dual Channel.., and click Next

    - The Wizard will tell you that it is ready to install, so click Next

    - Once it is done, choose Finish

Second, you need to double click on the Secondary IDE Channel, click on the

Advanced Settings tab, then change the Transfer Mode for Device 0 from DMA

    to PIO. Then click Okay

At this point you can close the Device Manager and any other windows that

happen to be open. You can reboot from here and the drive should work

    without a problem.

Now the controller part sounds like a good idea, but I don't like the part about changing to PIO won't that slow things way the hell down?

    Thoughts? ..... Comments?

  5. well i can't tell ya the model number now cause I'm in my room and don't want to bother anyone asleep but I suppose any of these will do.

    Lite-On DVD Burners

I think mine is the lower end one. I've had mine for a little while yet I still have yet to buy a black Floppy drive to finally complete the system and get rid of beige completely. ( I'm still using an old beige one from a 5 year old gateway)

I see you provide a link to newegg. That's were I got this drive. When I went to the site to get a RMA I was told I couldn't get an on line RMA for this product. I don't understand that. I can't call them until Monday.

Have you done business with them before? Are they going to give me a hard time about a refund?

Can anyone tell me their experience with newegg?

From the product page on Newegg.com:

** This item is warranted through the product manufacturer only.

Oh oh ..... I guess that means no refund. I find that hard to accept since the product is defective. I should have a choice. I'll see what's up when newegg opens on Monday.

I talked with Sony Tech Support this morning and the drive is indeed defective. They told me they would replace it, but I would have to paid to send the unit to them or I could contact newegg and have them send me a pick up tag.

    Thanks

  7. LITE-ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sorry. Yes it sounds like the drive might be defective but a sure fire way to be sure is is take them both out. Set the jumpers on one for master and one for slave. If that don't work then try the drive in another computer. If that don't work well then buy a Lite-O*, I mean another one of those that you bought.

Sorry. I just have to say Lite-On cause despite the complaints some have about them (mostly noise related) I have always had good luck with them. Also, if you show up to office max the right day you can get a 16X24X48X16X Dual Layer Lite-On DVD-/+RW for dirt cheap. Got mine for like 20-30 off normal price. Right place right time. Went back in a coupla weeks later for other junk and saw it had shot back up. This is how I got my Wireless router for 35 bucks too. Right place(office max), right time.

Any particular model you would recommend? Or just any model Lite-O?

I was looking at the NEC 3550A ..... the review are good and the price is good too.

  8. I just noticed Win2k and XP are different. Sony suggests disabling DMA for those burners. I don't know why. Toward the bottom you can see that some drives will not be detected if DMA is enabled.

How do I enable DMA mode on CD and DVD burner drives?

Okay there are DMA setting for the IDE controller and it's set for DMA.

That's what's in the link you provide.

So that's not the problem.:unsure::(

    Update:

I ran the drive test .... it didn't make it pass the start point ....

You are suppose to insert a blank disc to run the test, when I do I get this message ....

"Please verify that you have a blank disc in the "Sony DVD RW DRU-810A(1d)" drive, then re-run the test by selecting "<Back".

Sounds like this drive is indeed defective.

  9. If DMA is enabled it can cause burning problems. When you right clicked on each drive then Properties look under the Settings tab for DMA.

When I right clicked on each drive I get a General tap, a Properties tab, a Advance Setting tab, and a driver tab.

There is nothing in the Advance Setting tab except for the Region code in the property there is nothing but the cd audio controls and settings.

There is nothing about a DMA ..... nothing at all.

Sony has a drive test site, but they say not to use it unless the tech person tell you to ..... I don't see why do you ....

    Here is the site

I even tried to disconnect my other drive to see it this one would work because sony tech support said they didn't recommend using two burners. Still the same results.

I think its time to test it.

  10. If the DVD drives are on the same cable set them to Cable Select instead of Master/Slave. Also make sure you go into Device Manager and right click on each drive, click the Properties Button and uncheck DMA mode.

I'll try the cable select, but there is nothing about DMA mode when I right click on the drives in the device manager. Is it suppose to have this. I don't see it with either drive.

  11. What software package are you using? You may also want to take a peek here.

The only software that came with it was the Nero 6. It was already installed because I have a sony DRU-800a as well. I don't have any problems with it.

I will look over the support site ..... hopefully it will give me a clue.

    Update ...

I checked the link. That is for XP .... I'm running W2K will there be a difference?

  12. Hi all, I just installed a Sony DRU-810A DVD burner. I did the firmware update from 1a to 1d. I checked the device manager and it states the unit is working properly. I checked the driver to make sure it was current.

It will not see any disc I insert. CD or DVD. When I click on the drive I get "please insert disc".

    Anyone know what is happening?

  13. Would there be any kind of conflict if I had two of the same model dvd burner?

I have a burner but my dvd rom keeps giving me reading errors when ever I copy a disc to another, so I figure it's time for a new dvd rom, but I thought why not get another burner, so if something happens to one, I'll have the other to fall back on.

So can I have two burners?

    Thank you for your time.

  14. BitTorrent makes my machine freeze, crash or blue screen! What should I do?

BitTorrent cannot make your computer freeze, crash or blue screen. Windows (NT/2000/2003/XP) is designed so that an application cannot cause a freeze, crash or blue screen. If your computer crashes, freezes, or blue screens each time you are use BitTorrent, it represents a bug in either Windows itself, or more commonly in your network drivers.

If you are experiencing freezes, crashes, or blue screens, you may want to check your hardware manufacturer for updated drivers. However, having up-to-date drivers does not necessarily mean they are bug free. If there is no update, you should report this bug to the hardware manufacturer.

If you have a DSL modem, especially an Alcatel, you should upgrade your drivers. If you have a Linksys network card, you may have to upgrade your network card drivers as well.

When your computer reboots is it the same error message in Event viewer everytime?

    Cheers

    Peterm

I did update all my drivers and still it rebooted ..... I also checked the event viewer and the only warning was for a unrelated drive.

Only when I stop using bit tornado and switched to utorrent did the problem stop. I've downloaded another file with utorrent and I had no problems so changing the torrent client solved my problem.

It's obvious bit tornado and win2000 pro do not get along.

Anyway I just want you all to know the problem is solved! No more rebooting!:lol:

  15. I can't test the memory until I get a new floppy drive

    why...

get a bootable linux cd like knoppix.. when you get to the first prompt type memtest86

mem test in progress.. no floppy needed.

Is it free software? If so were do I get it?

    Thanks

It's really looking like this is the bit torrent causing problems. I'm going to have to do more research on the issue.

    \ hi spirittoo

    try going to safe mode

and see if it reboots in safe mode if it dosent

then it is most likely an application problem [bit torrent]

    or a driver problem

    good like

    marty

It doesn't reboot in safe mode ...... it doesn't reboot when the bit torrent is not running only when the torrent is running does it reboot, so this is without a doubt a torrent problem.

Is there anyone that understands torrents and why it is causing this problem?

    Thank you for time.

  17. Azureus is a terrible P2P program and Win2K doesn't have the issues with too little memory that WinXP has. If anything it could be a bad stick of memory. I believe you have a corupted driver, weak or failing power supply, bad stick of memory or toher hardware problem.

It can't be the power supply because I replaced it with a new one and it still does it. I can't test the memory until I get a new floppy drive. The corrupt drive sound likely but how to I find and correct it?

I could not find a driver for the modem and when I did the msinfo and there wasn't a IRQ#2 there was a #1 and #3 but no #2.

IRQ#1 was the keyboard so I got the software and installed the driver on it.

  18. Sorry if I missed it but what kind of internet connection do you have....are you using a usb modem by any chance?...google gave a vague reference to a driver issue on a Speedtouch USB modem by alcatel when searching the stop code you posted....worth checking for a driver update if you have this modem

I have a cable modem. I don't believe it is a USB modem. I believe I checked the driver, but I will check again.

What is listed in your Event Viewer? The 0 X 00000002 means there is a problem with a device using IRQ #2. I don't know if this works with 2K but try typing MSINFO32.exe in the run box then hit Enter. See what devices are using IRQ #2.

I'll try it and get back to you.

Why don't you try a different bit torrent client? Try Azureus... Lots of these clients don't like playing with certain hardware and configurations of ......

How much RAM are you running? It could be as simple as "not enough" RAM.

I'll give it a shot .... I am running 785MB of ram. Thanks

  19. I'm running windows 2000 Pro.

I tried running AVG but it shut down on me before I could. I have auto window updates that's updated.

What is going around that is causing the system to reboot?

    Help!

Update: I checked windows update and no critical updates are needed. I am running AVG again and plan to run spybot .... I don't have ad aware installed.

I will give more info as I get it. If you know what is causing it to reboot please post.

    Thank you for your time.

Update .... something wierd is going on with my spybot ....the language is changed and I didn't do it!

    hi spirittoo

does it reboot in safe mode?

    marty

Hi Marty .... I'm not sure I understand. Do you mean when it reboots at ramdom it goes into safe mode? If so no.

If you are asking if I can reboot it into safe mode ... I haven't tried that yet.

I did uncheck the auto reboot so windows would tell me what is wrong.

I got a blue screen after 57 minutes downloading using the bittorrent.

This is the message I got ...

    ***STOP: 0X0000000D1, (0 X 00000009, 0 X 00000002, 0 X 00000000, 0 X 000000009)

    DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

    Beginning dump or physical memory.

Physical memory dump complete. Contact your system administrator or tech support group .....

    So what do you think?

  20. Good morning techies ..... last night before I crashed out I check the drives as suggested ..... two were given updates by windows updates.

It was the video card and the monitor. When I when out this morning I left the machine on and it did not reboot ..... it's been almost two hours and it reboots before then ..... so it may have been the drivers.

I'm going uninstall and reinstall the bit torrent and see what happens.

I will let you guys know. Thanks to all those that took the time to post. I really appreciate that.

    Update

Well I ran the bit torrent and after about 40 mintues the machine reboots. It's got to be the torrent causing it. I'm running bit tornado. Each and everytime it reboots the bit torrent was running. The over two hours it ran without rebooting bit tornado was not running .... so it's got to be that.

I will check the machine again with AVG this time in safe mode along with the other spyware stuff and see what I can come up with. Then I will check and see if there is an updated version of bit tornado.

I will get back to you. Thanks
