Whats The Best Bittorrent Client?
shanenin replied to REMIX_23's topic in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP
bittorent is a great technology. Most linux distributions allow their isos to be distributed that way. It is a great way to split up the bandwith between many people. Without bittorent to help distribute huge isos, someone has to pay to run a ftp sight. I do agree, alot of what bittorrent is used for is not so wholesome. I am sure thier is plenty of crap that can get on your computer by using it. After about a year of downloading televison shows, I think I may have possibly "got something". That is why now I only use my linux box for any p2p. -
Whats The Best Bittorrent Client?

I think azureus is great, it has lots of cool features. It may use a lot of cpu cycles, but it does not affect me. Most people have a cpu that is idle most of the time. I don't mind working my cpu a little. I used to run azureus on windows, now I run it exclusively on linux. -

when I first got my laptop, the option to hibernate was in the shutdown menu, along with: stand by, shut down, and restart. I reformated my computer and reinstalled using a generic xp home OEM cd. How would I go about adding the hibernate option back into the shutdown menu. I tried following this guide by enableing hibernation, but it did not see to have any effect. http://windows.about.com/library/tips/bltip512.htm

Help! Password Protect My Network Places
shanenin replied to xxkbxx's topic in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP
if you have a linux box that is sharing files with a windows box, this will set a passwoed smbpasswd -a root now to see these files from network places in windows, you will need to enter a password I am not sure how you would set this in windows, I'm waiting to see what one of the "windows experts" says edit added later// I think windows home only allows for "simple file sharing". I am not sure, but do not think setting a password is an option for windows xp home. This may be possible with xp professional. -

thanks for the suggestions, I will try those both :-) -
I have been playing with my new laptop. I have not been able to figure this out. without a scroll wheel I am not sure how to open new links in a tab. I am using firefox-1.5. I have looked at all of the tab options, but none seem to enable this. ( oops, sorry . I clicked the wrong button Pete_C)

I first tried to learn C, I got frustrated, and bored fast. It is a little tough with no programming experince. My next attempt to learn a language(after doing some bash scripting for a while) was python. Python is very easy to understand, but powerful. It is easy to write a very useful program with just a few lines of code. I use the simple python programs I have written most everyday. One huge plus to python is its code is portable, it can be used on winodows, unix(linux), mac, and many other systems. I like this book, it is desighned for someone with NO propgramming experience, but by the

Just a thought, shanenin! I've known you for several years and you are a top notch Linux guru. Perhaps you should let people know on your upcoming website that you specialize in both Windows and Linux? More and more people are using our favourite OS so why not let em know about it? That could perhaps give you more business. I have a local computer store here in town and I noticed a little picture of tux painted on his computer repair van. Cheers!! Happy New Year!!! I will definately mention linux in the websight(I would love to solve linux problems for $). Most people who use linux, te

I have a domain purchased, and the websight listed in the yellow pages. But as of now, it is just parked at godaddys. I need to get a simple page put together soon. I originally did not expect the phone book to be published(and delivered) until February, so this caught me off guard. I feel like I need to make a logo. Once that is done, it should be easy to write a simple page. www.brighteyedcomputer.com

yup, that is still the name, but computer(single). Thanks all :-)

I am officially a professional pc repair guy. With that said, I know less then many of of the people that frequent this board. The new telephone book, which contains my ad, were just released. I got my first call this afternoon. I just finished reinstalling windows on a dell dimension 3000. It was pretty painless. Now my job would be perfect if I was able to work on linux machines instead of windws, oh well.

The one and only time I tried to "rip a game", was sims 2. I used alcohol 120% to do it. You need to know the copy protection used, I think it was a verison of safedisc, maybe safedisc3/4(something like that). From what I remember I got lots of read errors, those are normal. Even with the errors the iso image worked. edit added later// programming a game takes lots of work and money, make sure you do not "rip a game" you do not own :-)

Windows Updates Be Installed Manually?
shanenin replied to shanenin's topic in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP
Wow that program is great. It gives you all different options of things to update including registry tweaks, other great windows tools. I chose critical updates and reccomeneded updates. It installed 68 of them for me in just about 15 minutes. -
The experts log-on to this forum frequently. Please be patient as you wait for a reply. Thanks, and Merry Christmas! I have no experience with an email server. Just a thought, don't most ISPs block port 25, which is needed to serve email

thanks for the suggestion, but no luck. When I ran fixmbr, it told me my mbr had an irregular configuration. It told me it may be unsafe to run fixmbr, but I did anyways. Upon reboot, i got the same error. since dd is doing a bit for bit copy, I wonder why it would get corrupted. edit added later// I think one of the two drives I was using is going bad, so that may have factored in. i may give it a try again with a new drive.

Windows Updates Be Installed Manually?
shanenin replied to shanenin's topic in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP
if autopatcher works well, it will be a great solution. I like the thought of it automating the install process of all of the individual updates. I am going to take a look later at the microsoft download site. Can you download and install the the whole months worth of updates together, or does each indivdual update need to be downloaded and installed seperately? -
I thought I would try harddrive to harddrive backup(one last time) my windows was installed on a 20 gb harddrive, /dev/hda. I copied it to my 40 gb drive on /dev/hdb using the following command: dd if=/dev/hda conv=sync, noerror of=/dev/hdb I then erased my harddrive partitions on /dev/hda using cfdisk. the first time I tried to copy it back I used this command. I figured it would run out of space, but did not think it would matter dd if=/dev/hdb conv=sync, noerror of=/dev/hda it seemed to copy correctly, I was able to mount the partation /dev/hda1, but when I tried to boot windows i got an e

Thank you :-) @deaf_girl I also appreciate your input -
Can a person download all of windows updates with a fast connection, then transfere them to a different computer and install them? My uncle has only dial-up and was asking me about this. I know you can manually download sp2, and install that, but what about all of the updates since sp2 edit added later// I know my friend has an executable that will install sp2, which I am able to get from him. I would prefer just to download it from microsoft, but can't seem to find it. They only seem to be offereing to sell my the cds, or use windows update to get it.
