  1. yes ive just come back to the post. depends on how many applis you are running.remember ive reinstaled xp. so at the moment i have the bare bones. later it will take longer as i install different .applications.before i reinstalled it used to take 32 minutes to scan with avg but twice as long with avast .my hdd is 20 gegs.i also have a ten geg on another compt.and it takes roughly about the same time.i found there is very little difference between avg and avast . with the new avg beta version,it is more simplistic.and i intend to keep it .tho i can always fall back on avast if need be m
  2. uninstall real player.because there is a conflict between wmp and RP. RP used to be full of spyware and that may be your problem.and it used to share dll files with wmp. and there was a conflict between both players . and if you use any win based OS wmp takes precedence over any other player . the diffucult thing is you cant uninstall wmp but you can RP. so my solution is dump RP.how do i know this?been there done that.   3. do you get the linux news letter.a friend says he gets the news letter and there is a narticle in it .on linux viruses. i have the mandrake 9.1 disks but haven loaded them yet. i dont know how to use a dual sys.and i need to know how do to make a dual boot ive been watching the linux forum. what i ntend to do is load mandrake on to a stand alone sys. i have a spare p2 but it only has a 4.5 hdd and im sure that isnt enough.gegs back to linux and virus. im sure i read where as linux gets more public support the more it will be a target for the virus writers

  6. me neither .thats why i installed avg beta version.probably because we have used avg for so long we are reluctant to change. tho i installed avast when i was at techtv c.f.h.petecovell recomended it and he used it for some time. but i dont think he uses it any more.ihave installed it several times and ive had some problems with it.so i went to avg beta version.and i am using it fine,it is a bit more user friendly than avast. marty
  7. yes tho avast was a good av .it was to slow for me it used to take 18mns to do a full scan where as it takes avg7 beta version about 7 minutes. thats why i uninstalled avast.and tried the new avg7.and i like it if any one is interested look at my post in regards to avg7 marty
  8. hi team has any one installed the beta version of avg . well i just down loaded it and it is fine. had trouble getting the down load and the reg page . but.got through in the finish . if any one is interested make sure when you go to your email box.the url at the bottom of the page needs to be pasted into the address bar .and be sure you get the whole line or it wont work. marty post back if you need help
  9. make sure you put the connection the right way round its a wonder chappy hasent answered this post he is an expert on floppy drives or at least he used to be at c.f.h marty have you been to device manger and tried to update the floppy driver it may help marty
  10. hi mikex well that trick of using water was great.it got all the labels off i used a carving chesel to scrape them at the moment i have them drying in the sun.in case water got into recording sector.i also used hot water which made a huge difference.i keep you in touch on the progress the org im donating too will probably need my expertise to be able to access them.and of course the member of this board in particular your self . so thanks take care marty
  11. just installed avast. and im having trouble with the tracking which comes up at the bottom of my screen.this is dam annoying. is there some way i can make that tracking scan in the background with out it showing.from my task bar. marty

  15. hi team sad tp see some one smacking sultan for trying to do some thing good for people. sultan and i joined techtv about the same time .those days his user name was slighlty different.and like me he was a novice . but now he has helped a lot of people.so ime puzzled as to why he has been muzzled for spamming the board .tho i dont read all his links many many people do.and this spamming thing dosent fit . thos techtvg4 has a lot of know it alls . hope sultan dosent take offence he may come here more often . marty
  16. hi team recently i recycled 20 floppys.and formated them, but now i need to clean the labels off the disks can this be done with detergent or a cleaning tool .or a cleaning fluid. im not experience with floppys so i need info here. i want to donate them to a charitable organisation. were i did chartable work for some years. i have another 20 -30 i will format.and donate to them..but i need to get rid of the labels thanks marty

  18. it may be my security was to high and avast may have detected some thing . and interptited it as a virus . when i posted about the warning the guy wouldnt except it may be a virus. he said he had scanned with avg. how can i tell him avg dosent update any more it is developing software to fit with win sp2. i have an email from them telling me to wait until they.change their sys and then install the new version which will still be free. go there if you need to but be care ful. ive just scanned the post with housecall but it found nothing so my fears m
  19. hi team i went there yesterday and struck a thread called horror stories from cat@ some posted a link and i went into it and my scanner went wild warning me of a POTENTIAL virus .twice it did that iwas going to send the link by eamail to a freind until that siren . so i posted a warning to all posters who went there to be careful. and the guy who posted the link wouldnt believe my scanner went off he said i used avg and it didnt show any thing i tried to explain avg dosent update any more which is one of the reasons i changed to avast. i got a notice from grisoft telling me they are discontui
  20. just went to a link on g4 in a thread called horror stories @cat and some one posted a link to a site .my advice be care full in there as when i checked on the link my scanner set of the alarm and a voice said my sys was in danger of being infected.this may be my settings were to high. and i dont want to point the finger at any one. but it scared the living sh-----t out of me i dont want to mention the name of the link poster but if you go there watch that post marty

  23. the code to the k-board shut down is right click your shut down icon -. in the short cut window press ctrl--alt and any key you nominate.and use these 3 keys to shut down. the actual shut down code for win 98 and me i c:\windows\rundll.exe user.exe,exit windows hey i got this from the c.f.h archives . my there are some handy tips in there .56.000 of them. marty
