  1. Yeah, when telephones are above land they collect static. A surge protector will help on a phoneline, absorbing 13,000 amps does help. Maybe the modem goes, but at least your computers safe. Pierce
  2. Same here, full bill plans are not popular for young people, cause if they did, the 100 txt's a day would be put to shame by almost everybody here. On christmas day alone 25million text messages were sent!! Theres only 5million people in ireland! Pierce
  3. We do have a solution to txting in ireland, and almost every kid has one, its called pre-paid mobile(we have more than 100% penetration of mobiles, so yes that means some people have more than 1, and yes ive seen one person with 4...........). So its like a coin machine. That way you can only spend whats already in the account. I dont know if thats even a possibility in the states? Just a thought. Pierce
  4. The joys of windows administration You dont have to add anything on that list, as you already log into that computer using some "user/pass". I didnt have to add anything it just "worked" for me. You could always go the 3rd party route... www.ultravnc.com I remote from work to home using it, on a 3mbit down, 378kbps up. Pierce
  5. Its not the stuff you uninstalled. The reason it probably doesnt work with msn messenger, is because the port required to view it from public is not forwarded. (Thats only if your router has NAT, which it probably does). Check your firewall and make sure its allowed to get through the firewall, including windows's if you use it. Whats happening is that its not "enabled" or somethings "disabled" its because it acts like a server, and so does malicious software, and is treated more rigorusly. Play with the firewall and port forwarding see if that helps. Pierce
  6. btw, all the 0 are zero, not the letter o or O, just so you know Pierce

  8. weight is all too important. Now folks before we go out and buy ultra strong earth magnets (neodymium) from ebay. Dont keep them in your pockets even if they are tiny, cause when you go to pay your magnetic strip on your cc is going to be fubard, and your going to be embarased when none of your plastic works at a shop checkout! Its a great idea, wonder if it will ever be advaiable for the home? Son, no dont press the big red button!!!!!!!! Pierce

  11. The even easier way to answer this is to look at windows Vista. Windows vista asks you if your sure you want to allow a process to open a particular section, like device manager etc. Something familyar with linux, su - first, or in most gui systems enter root password. A lot of experts say that windows is too complicated to be inovative. And was cited as a reason by jounalists as to why Bill Gates job as chief artetecture was friviouless. It has 50 layers of code, and the only thing they can do is put out fires as they happen or make sure they dont happen. Also look the philosophy of how the o
  12. That's not exactly something I'd be bragging about (or telling people ) You can free up gigabytes of space by running disk cleanup if you haven't run it in a while. Especially if you use system restore. Defrag will speed of your computer if it needs it bad. Your post strains credibility actually. Go find a computer that's been put through daily use by the average, uneducated PC user. You'll have mountians of temporary files, IE crap, and system restore points. Ive got 5MB of disk space taken up, it was hardly worth the time to look it up. For doing a manual virus scan once a week? W
  13. I would take a lenovo (it still says IBM on it, unless your in china). They have long life, and will last forever, even at work im using a laptop thats anchient and it still works. Dell is okay, but they have problems, and dell style is so well known its even more attractive for theifs. Have you looked at Acer? They do nice portable notebooks. Pierce

  16. Ive been running this pc with a windows install for 2 years. The only maintence i did was a spyware scanner when something was wrong, a registry checkup when right click was slow, and i have Nod32 installed which updates 4 times a day. Pierce

  18. http://www.csszengarden.com/ that is the reason you'd want to use css for layout, rather than tables. Check it out, and read the source code, dont neglect the CSS source. Btw if your interested in CSS, start small and simple Learn what a boarder, margin and padding is, and how the differ Learn the different types of poisitiong Also, to start, do basic shapes, 1 box x 2 boxes beside each other xx 2x2 boxes xx xx a box inside a box it will take you a while to grasp the idea of css, but it shouldnt be too hard. 25. Theres 31.5million second in a year. But a better way to look at it, is like this. Bill Gates makes that every 50 days~. Irelands budget is in the billions, not Trillions. Earning $45,000 a year, would take 22,222 years to make a billion. 3.3million licences of windows a parking lot with 7142 ferrari's 10 top penthouses in lower manhatton. an oc-768 (40Gigabit internet connection) for 100 years. 20 private 717 jets 100 dedicated servers on 100mbit lines, for 5555years Or 1 policy Pierce
