Thanks TT
I know where the battery is...........is there anything special I need to know about changing that
or is it just basically, hook up my grounding strap, and take out the old one and put in the new one.
Any thing else I should be aware of?

I had a "checksum error" when I booted up this morning.
It asked to load the defaults and I said "OK" and all is running fine.
What exactly is a checksum error and why did I get one?
What do I have to worry about here?
Thanks, experts!!

It sure sounds like a bad battery
Since it's new, I would think the warranty
should replace it.

Oh Barb.....what wonderful advise
I will pass that on to my kids for their kids......
Marry Christmas!!!

Well, I couldn't wait so I did it right now.
I disabled the security center and everything
else works fine. I set the auto updates to
just notify and not download and install and
it popped up with three updates which I did
download and install and all is right with the world!!!
Jsky, and Terrorist, thank you both so much for your
knowledge and advise.....you guys have solved a MAJOR
problem for me today and I owe you guys one!!!!
Merry Christmas to you and yours!!!

I will try that this weekend when I have time to monitor
the install and post back the results.
Thanks you so much for the help.
This has been a constant frustration
to me since SP2 was released.

Well, since the Security center seems to be my problem,
how do you disable it? I have a seperate firewall and AV
program that I run. I used to always do a manual install
of the updates but I couldn't do it when they started
the requirement of SP2 to get further updates.
I also use FF for my browser and Thunderbird for my
mail program with Mail Washer Pro.
If I could disable the security center without having to open it
I could re-install the SP3 and I would be all set!!

A question for Jsky....
I downloaded and installed SP3 and I had the same problem that I had when I
repeatedly tried to install SP2. The install goes OK......and I did follow your instructions
that I saw posted above...and when I finally restart, the computer will boot up fine but
here's the thing.
Since I have automatic updates disabled, I get that little red shield in the lower right corner of the
task bar. When I hover over it, my choices are open the Windows Security Center or go to the
Microsoft web site. If I choose to open the security center, the Title bar of the window appears
on my screen but the window itself doesn't finish opening. After about 5 seconds, the mouse freezes
up and then another 10 seconds of so and the screen goes black and another 5 seconds or so, and
the computer reboots itself.
When it finally reboots, the security center again (by itself this time) tries to open and I get the title bar
and the lock ups and reboots. This just continues over and over.
What I finally end up doing is holding F-8 and open in safe mode and then uninstall the service pack.
I have asked for advise on this problem before when I couldn't get SP2 to install but finally just gave up and
turned off the auto update feature and wrote it off to experience. I had hoped that there might have been a
fix built into the SP3 that would let me install and get back to full protections.
Any thoughts or ideas??
thanks ... jim

Jsky.....adding the "0" to the MSDOS.SYS file did the trick.
Works great.....just like I wanted it to.
Thanks again.....

Thanks for the input, folks. A couple of the games would not run right in a DOS window, and you actually
had to restart in DOS mode to get them to work, so Liz's idea wouldn't help with that. I will try JSKY's idea..
that sounds like what I was looking for.
The problem with using a DOS emulator like DOSBOX is that the darn games won't even decompress or install
a lot of the time so going back to a previous OS seemed like the only answer. I have LOTS of room on the
2nd HD so it's not a problem to have 98 installed.
Thanks again for all the help......I'll post back to let you all know how it went.

I have recently installed Win98 on a partition in my second HD so
my grandkids can play some old DOS games that would not work
under XP. I also have (in addition to XP) a partition with Ubuntu
on it, as well. I use the Grub Loader to select which OS I want
to boot up.
I am sure that there is a way to get it to boot right to DOS and
not have to boot into Win98 and then choose "Shut down" and
finally choose "Restart in DOS mode"
Does somebody remember which file to edit and what the
command should be? Maybe it's not possible and I'll just
have to get used to doing all the extra steps.
Ideas???
Thanks..........jr

share and send it all my way tomorrow, aren't you
thanks a bunch!!!

I know because my dad used to call me at that time on my BD to wish me a happy one.

I used to know a teacher at the middle school here and he always said
that when kids turn 13, they should be shipped off to camp for 5 years!!
Good stuff, Marty.

I was wondering how often (if ever) you need to update your BIOS.
Should you expect to pay for this update, and if so, how much?
These are probably "noobie" type questions but I was just wondering.
Thanks

I hear the computer guy, Peter Green, on Wis Public Radio talking all the time about running two AV programs at the same time and most of the time, there are no problems. I suppose that you can get conflicts with certain programs but you will probably have to experiment. I run AVAST and AVG and they work fine.

If you want your super glue to last longer, you should
keep it in the refrigerator when you are not using it.

Or, as my youngest grandson so aptly put it........I'm FREE!!!!!!!
Glad I've been along for the ride!
Happy Birthday, BT.........MANY happy returns, too.

Boy, don't that bring a lump to your throat??

Funny....but actually, that looks like a dry suit---don't wet suits "breath"??

If I wanted to make some cd's from records, how would I go about getting each song to be a track on the CD.
Do I have to start and stop Audacity with each cut on the record? Or, is it possible to input the whole record and
then cut and paste each cut as a new project and then burn it out to a CD?? Anybody tried this?
thanks........jim

Without knowing your exact location, it looks like UPS ground would be
$12.50. The UPS web site needed a city and area so I said Manhatten
If you want to PM me with an exact address, I can figure it a bit
closer for you but I think that will be pretty close. I'm figuring 8 pounds
for the package
thanks...........jr
