  1. I am having a problem with Excel 2000.

every time I try to open a spreadsheet, the taskbar on the bottom of the excel window says "requesting virus scan" and then I get a pop up windows that says 'Microsoft Excel has encountered a problem and needs to close' and wants to send an error report. Doesn't matter which button I click on--excel closes.

I use Excel a lot and this is very annoying. Anybody have any ideas on what is the problem?

Comp is AMD 64 x 2 running at 3 Ghz and 4 Gigs of RAM

OS is XP Pro (SP3 installed) and Excel 2000 (Office 2000 suite)

    Thanks, experts!

  2. Well FWIW.. I agree with you about the automatic updates. I have mine also set to notify but

    not download.

I recently upgraded a lot of stuff in my comp and did a clean install of XP Pro and updated at that time

to SP3 and all went fine. Since that time, which was mid June, I have only seen TWO updates and those were the

microsoft anti-spyware checker. There haven't been any other updates since.

  3. Have you tired to run the games in compatibility mode?

Yes I have and they don't work. Some won't even install. They have their own install

program and when you put them in the drive and click on install, you get asked what drive

and so on. I can't input anything into the program at that point. It's like the keyboard

just quit and you have to input something.....there is no "default" to drive C:\

I guess they are just too old. They were fun, too.

  4. Yeah, Windows 98. I have a lot of old DOS games that work great under 98 ( and NOT under XP) and I

have 5 grandkids that love to play games on Grandpa's computer.

Having recently upgraded my comp, I am trying to get everything back like I had it and

it's not working out right. Probably something simple that I'm missing. Here's what I am

    running right now.

Master drive is Windows XP Pro SP3

I am running it on a AMD 64 Dual Core 6000+ at 3.1 Ghz

and I have the RAM maxed out at 4 X 1024 MG (4 gigs)

What I tried to do today was to format my other drive (another 80Gig) and then install Windows 98

onto that and I would boot to the drive I want to use. Either Win98 or WinXP.

When it finished installing the 98, it went to restart and then I get a message that it doesn't have enough memory to run Windows and I should remove any memory resident programs from the Config.sys or Autoexec.bat files.

Well I manages to get on this drive and checked those files, and the ONLY entry in the config.sys is Device=C:\Windows\Setver.exe and there ISN'T an Autoexec.bat file at all.

When I get that message, my only option is to hit 'enter' to continue and that shuts down the computer.

Now.........what do I have to do to get that Windows 98 to boot? Any ideas, or am I just plain out of luck.

    Help me, experts.........

  5. I assume you are running a 32bit version of Windows XP, if that is the case, Windows will not address more than the 3.25GB it is showing. In order for it to recognize the full 4GB of RAM you will need to get a 64bit edition of Windows.

    B

    OK then. That makes sense.

    Thanks BT...appreciate the quick reply.

  6. I recently upgraded my computer and I installed 2 Gig of Memory at the time and all worked fine.

I saw on Sunday that Tiger direct had the memory on sale that I just bought a month ago so I bought

me 2 more Gigs ($34 after rebate) and installed that too. The motherboard has four slots and now they

are all full. The memory sticks are all the same.....Corsair TWINX PC6400 DDR2 800 MHz ....four 1 Gig sticks.

The MoBo will accept up to 16 Gigs of memory, from what I read. It is an Asus M2N-SLI nForce 560 Socket AM2 board

and I am running an AMD Ahtlon 64 X2 6000+ chip at 3GHz and I have XP Pro SP3 for my OS.

Now....here's the thing. The BIOS says that there are 4 Gig installed but when I check thru Windows / Control Panel / System / it

shows that I have 3.25 Gig of memory. I remember reading that XP Pro could/would use up to 4 Gig of memory so why isn't it showing

up there? Is something wrong or out of whack?

I would appreciate any help or advise that you experts could offer on this.

  7. Hmmm, I just had a similar setup go kaput on me and I can't figure out what's wrong so this could fix it and upgrade it all in one go and I can do something with that PC again, but what I don't know. That's what I'm trying to figure out. If I can think of a good use for it, I might get this stuff off ya.

I'm going out of town for a few days so if you try to contact me, I'll be unavailable.

I also have the original CPU cooling fan for the chip that I'll throw in with the deal.

  8. No, sorry, it does not.

I basically kept the tower, power supply, and the drives and

    upgraded everything else.

I also will throw in the original CPU cooling fan.

I never used it because I bought the copper

cooling flower and fan and installed those right away.
