  1. Ok I'll try that

I did part of it before but when I got to the screen that said it wanted to format the partition, I freaked. I didn't want to format and lose all the data.

I guess I'm at a point right now where I don't expect I'll be able to save it, although, there is a lot of stuff on there.......music files and pictures, and stuff like that, that I'd really not like to have to duplicate.

    Thanks for the suggestion

  2. Hi All

The other night, I turned on the computer and got a screen that gave me choices of:

    Safe Mode

    Safe Mode with networking

    Safe Mode with something else

    Last know configuration that worked

    Start Windows normally.

The computer worked fine that morning and I can't figure what changed but something did.

I tried everything, all the choices above, to get the darn thing to boot and nothing worked. It just kept looping back to the POST--- SO I put the XP disc in the CD drive and booted up from CD and I can get the computer up that way but I can't access the disk. I ran the repair console and I repaired the Boot sector and the MBR. It did tell me that I had a bad boot sector and supposedly repaired it.

I still couldn't get it to boot......I still get the black screen described above.

Well.............I wanted to install a second HD anyway so this seems like the right time.

Got the new drive......formatted it and installed XP Pro on it and got it up and running.

I have tried to install the old drive as a slave drive by setting the jumpers on the new drive and the old drive and that didn't work---The computer wouldn't boot again. It was just like I had the old drive in there alone. I switched the jumpers around to cable select and I have the right kind of cable, and that wouldn't work, either, so I unhooked the old drive and then it will boot from the new drive just fine. REALLY FRUSTRATING!!!

I really don't want to lose some of the data on the old drive. It's only a little over a year old, too. Does anybody have any ideas about what I could try to salvage this drive???

  3. I had to do a complete re-install and reformat with WinXP Pro

Now, every time I boot up, I get asked if I want to log in as "me" or as the administrator.

I didn't used to get asked this, it always logged me in as "me".

How do I do this again? Does somebody know what the settings have to be??

    Thanks!

    Jim

  4. I like to do a clean install including reformat every year or so just to clean up my computer. In the past, I have always had Win 95 and then Win 98 OEM versions and there was no problem doing a reinstall of these OS's

I have been running Win XP Pro for the last year and am ready to do my clean up and I understand that after I reinstall the OS, I am going to have to re-activate (re register??) my XP Pro and that the OS won't let me reinstall without some kind of new "key" number.

Now, I bought the XP upgrade so I REALLY do own it. Am I going to have problems when it comes time to re-activate the OS? What is the procedure to get this "key" that I have heard about???

The other question is should I try to install SP2 when I do the reinstall?? I have tried three times to get the SP 2 to install and every time, I ran into problems where the computer locked up and I ended up uninstalling the SP2 and have been running with just SP1 without any problems.

I DON'T use IE for my browser and I DON'T use Outlook for my Email, either because of the security concerns.

Anybody want to offer any opinions?? Thanks in advance for any input.

    Jim

  5. Gee, I think so too.

I haven't had to upgrade my present box but on my last two computers, I upgraded the BIOS with a FLASH program and I don't remember having to pay anything for it.

I DO know that everything I have read says don't do it (FLASH the BIOS) if you don't absolutly have to because it can screw everything up if something goes wrong during the upgrade. The two times that IDID do it, everything went fine.

I don't mean to scare you off but make sure that your data is backed up safely before you do anything.

  6. FireFox is just a browser. LIke IE6 or Opera or Netscape.

Mozilla is a suite of programs all linked together.....Browser, Email, Newsgroups and so on.

A lot of people like FireFox because IE6 is a microsoft product and gets hacked a lot. I find that Firefox loads quicker, and loads pages quicker and it has built in pop up blockers that really work. You should be able to do anything with it that you do now with your current browser. If you like having a Email program that is integrated with it, then you should look at Mozilla instead. I use Eudora for my Email so I don't need Mozilla.
