  1. The next time you hear a politician use the word “billion†casually, think about whether he or she is the right one to be spending your tax money. A billion is a difficult number to comprehend, but an advertising agency did a good job of putting that figure into perspective in one of its publicity releases: * A billion seconds ago it was 1959. * A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive. * A billion hours ago our ancestors were living in the Stone Age. * A billion days ago no person walked on two feet on earth. * A billion dollars ago was only 8 hours and 20 minutes, at the rate our gov
  2. At a Milwaukee post office, a woman complained to the clerk that a Pony Express rider could get a letter from Milwaukee to St. Louis in two days, and now it takes three. "I'd like to know why," she scoffed. The clerk thought a moment and then suggested, "The horses are a lot older now?"
  3. A guy walks into the local welfare office for his monthly check. He marches straight up to the counter and says, "Hi. You know, I just HATE coming in here drawing welfare month after month. I'd really much rather have a job." The social worker behind the counter says, "Your timing is excellent. We just got a job opening from a very wealthy old man who wants a chauffeur-bodyguard for his nymphomaniac daughter. You'll have to drive around in his Mercedes, but he'll supply all of your clothes.Because of the long hours, meals will be provided. You'll be expected to escort her on her overseas holid
  4. I agree with that. I use Firefox for a browser, and Eudora Pro for Email and MailWasher Pro to check Email before downloading. I run AGV antivirus and regularly check with Spybot S&D and AdAware. I also run spyware Blaster and keep my hosts file current, too. I really can't understand why I can't get SP2 to work but unless there is a realson in the future that I REALLY have to have it in there, I think I will just say "to heck with it" and keep working with SP1 and all the other updates. I want to thank everybody that offered ideas. This is a GREAT forum with a lot of very knowledgeab
  5. The memory is 512 MG of Corsair DDR 2700 (w/heatsink) I did do a full format using NTFS. I have not tried the memtest, however, everything seems to be working fine.
  6. I'm not sure........when it finishes and does the restart, I get the error message that I posted above. If I just close the error reporting window, then I get the balloon telling me about the missing antivirus. When I click on THAT balloon, the security center tries to open and then I start looping. I would probably say, no--it didn't install correctly.
  7. Well, OK but I've done this 5 times now. This time it was on a New Clean Freshly formatted HD. NOTHING else on it.
  8. System Specs....Athalon 2500+ Barton core 512 MG Memory MB is Gigabyte GA-7VT600 (-L) and the Video Board is a Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 jr
  9. Well, still no luck. Here's what I did. I made an streamed CD to incorporate SP2 into the install. I used Autostreamer and I downloaded SP2 this time rather than use my SP2 CD. The basic install went OK and did the restart and then asked me to sign in as administrator. I did. After about 5 seconds, I get a pop-up window that says Windows has recovered from a serious error and should it send a report to MS. I said no to the sending but I did click to see what the error was. This is what the error message said: BCCodes 10000ea BCP1: 81CA88C0 BCP2: 81E16590 BCP3: F895DCB4 BCP4: 0000
  10. I have always used Get Right. It would segment larger files and download multiple files, too. It worked really nice when I had dial-up but now that I have cable, speed isn't really an issue. The thing I still use it for is that if the download is interrupted, Get Right will pick up the download where it was stopped. jr
  11. nope, don't have a CD like that. Have to do it the hard way! I'll keep a record of what I do in case I have problems and get back on the BB here for more help if I need it. I probably won't have the time to do all this till Wed next week on my day off. Thanks, everybody.........jr

    I Did It!

"disc0" IS your C: drive. Linux numbers your hard drives starting with 0. If you had another one, then that would be listded as disc1. It should see the partition that you put there and state the size of it so you should be able to figure out which partition you want to install in. Good luck. jr
  13. Ole, while not a brilliant scholar, was a gifted portrait artist. His fame grew and soon people from all over the country were coming to him in Minnesota for paintings. One day, a beautiful young woman pulled up to his house in a stretch limo. She asked Ole if he would paint her in the nude. This was the first time anyone had made this request. The beautiful lady said money was no object; she was willing to pay $50,000. Not wanting to get into trouble with his wife Ole asked the lady to wait while he went in the house and conferred with Lena, his missus. In a few minutes he
  14. Hi experts. I have been frustrated because I can't get SP2 to install on my machine and I've tried many times What I'm going to do next week is start with a clean, formatted HD ( I have an extra ) and see if I can get it installed on there. I intend to start with just the new HD in the machine and the XP CD in the drive. My question is this.........I should I install the XP Pro first and that has SP1 already in it. Then, should I go to Windows Update and just let it take over? I do have SP2 on CD but I don't know if I need to do all the updates to SP1 first. Since I will be installing on
  15. Jacques Chirac, The French Prime Minister, was sitting in his office wondering what kind of mischief he could perpetrate against the United States when his telephone rang. "Hallo, Mr. Chirac," a heavily accented voice said. "This is Paddy down here at the Harp Pub in County Kerry, Ireland. I am ringing to inform you that we are officially declaring war on you!" "Well, Paddy," Chirac replied, "This is indeed important news! How big is your army?" "Right now," said Paddy, "after a moment's calculation there is meself, me cousin Sean, me next door neighbor Seamus, and the entire dart team
  16. Taking a wee break from the golf circuit, Tiger Woods drove his new Ford Excursion into an Irish gas station. An attendant greeted him in typical Irish manner, unaware who the golf pro was. "Top of the mornin' to ya!" the Irishman smiled, doffing his cap. As Tiger got out of the mammoth vehicle, two tees fell out of his pocket. "So what are those, lad?" asked the attendant. "They're called tees," replied Tiger. "And what would ya be usin' 'em for, now?" inquired the Irishman. "Well, they're for resting my balls on when I drive," said Tiger. "AW! Jaysus, Mary an' Joseph," exclaimed the Irish

  23. Someone asked Milton Berle what kind of cigar he was smoking. His response was "it's a Lawrence Welk" "What's that?" he was asked. Milton replied "it's a piece of crap with a band around it"
  24. DOS 5 was a pretty neat release for it's time. It introduced the DOS shell (kind of like Explorer but not for windows)and I think it was the first version of DOS that let you utilize the upper memory. Remember back when 1 MG was a lot??? Things were a whole lot simpler back then. I really had a hard time switching over to windows (3.1 then) and I STILL remember most of the DOS commands. I never used a "menu" program.....I just did it all from the C: Ah yes.................those were the days!
