Honda_Boy Posted January 19, 2006 Report Share Posted January 19, 2006 (edited) Well here's another 160 with a proven track record also by seagate. only 2 people really had a problem.Another OneI don't know why you say the seagtes aren't good right now. they are the only ones with most of the drives 5 egg (star) WD and Maxtor were all 4 egg. I tell ya though those old seagate medalists last ages, I have two 8 year old ones that I still use for storage or use in a tower but not now that i have two 20 gig WD ones. one that I can use for linux in the Compaq and one i can use as the gateway's drive. Those medalists are still runnin fine though.it seems that there is a lot of crappy drives comin out of all the manufacturers. I heard shortly after I bought my Maxtor that there was a mess of bad 120 and 160 SATA drives. Mine is a 160 but lucky me it is IDE. Usually you just buy it and hope it works. Sometimes you get a sour product. it's like my 120mm case fan by Thermaltake. The LED's never worked but the fan spins fine and does it's job. That ain't discouraging me from buying more thermal take stuff. Heck I might just buy another Maxtor HDD for my next system if I can get a good deal. That's actually how I booght the one i did. Chappy Posted January 19, 2006 Report Share Posted January 19, 2006 I've had a whiny drive that's lasted well over three years now, also a Seagate.It seems to get louder some days more than others, but I use it for non important stuff just in case anyways.Just saying this as it's not Always a sign of a failing drive when they whine, it can simply be a product of the speed of drives these days, and the relative temp & humidity that makes it sound louder than usual.Of course tho, when it gets REALLY whiny or has a bit of a scratchy type of whine, then you can count the days this drive has left in it.Still...better safe than sorry, so a new drive never hurts. Buy.com's price is better after the rebate though. Plus free shipping.That IS the HDD I'm think of getting.But I need a battery too.
