  1. I have worked on this for a while and just can't seem to figure this out. When I boot up the pc it is working ok but not great. The CPU usage stays at about 50 to 60 percent. The cause is high hardware interupts that range about the same. I haven't been able to find any conflicts and there is no virus or malware to blame. I have run several test with all the standards including online scans. Now here is the only clue I have found, if I hit the sleep button on the keyboard and then wake the pc up the CPU and hardware interupts are back to normal. I could live with this but once they are back to
  2. Been down since about 2 AM central time. Was making a reply and never made it.
  3. Did check the IRQ's with no luck. Here is an odd one for the record, tried changing the keyboard again and powered up but still the same. I noticed the sleep button was on on the board and pushed it. The system logged off and went to sleep. I pushed it again and woke it up, logged on and the usage and interupts are now normal. Tried the same with the original board and had the exact same results doing the exact same thing. So for now it is ok but I'm wondering if the keyboard interupt is going to continue to be a problem or get worse. Time will tell, thanks for the help.
  4. I am 99.999 percent certain this is not a virus or malware problem for starters. This just all of a sudden happened about 2 days ago. I have found some possible solutions on google but none worked for me so far. Does anybody have a program that will tell me what the high hardware interupts are coming from? The last time this happened, I had installed Speed Fan. Once I uninstalled it the cpu usage went back to normal. I haven't installed anything recently that I can think of to cause this. Sysinternals found the problem but not the cause. The cpu hovers around 50 percent and the interupts about
  5. Anyone else notice that G4 seems to be down? No links are working. Not that it is a bad thing considering some of the forums.
  6. choppy and clicking in cakewalk is normaly a time mis match... I use a MOTU 2408 so I't easy to see what speed the card is set at and what speed the program is set at.. speed is the 44.8k 41k 88k ect.. Thanks, I will pass this along to him.
  7. He said it only happens with Cakewalk. I also had already mentioned to him that there could be a card compatibility issue.
  8. A friend of mine is having this problem and I went to there forum site to get some answers and did get some info. I was wondering if anybody here has used this program and had the same problem and what you did to fix it. I may already have the answer but would like more info just in case. If you found it was your audio card causing the problem, what did you have and what did you replace it with? I already know about changing from WDM to MME or MMC. I also know about not sharing the card with Windows default audio. I've never worked on a problem like this before so if you have further info plea
  9. These are leased machines going back. I don't have the disks you mentioned. I also don't have any passwords. The pc's were easy with KillDisk but these few Macs are a problem. They need to be inventoried, checked over for what is on them hardware wise and then the disk needs to be securely wiped. When it is all done it will probably be a few thousand pc's and about 20 Macs coming from locations all over. So this is why I need another program to do this.
  10. I have just a few Macs that need there Disks wiped just like KillDisk wipes pc's. Anyone know of any programs that are free to use or inexpensive to buy.
  11. I think your modem could be failing but first do as the others said and call your isp and see if they are having problems. Make sure they have your modem on file correctly (Mac). I had this issue with Comcast once. It was working but when they started doing upgrades to there system it would drop off intermittantly as you described. I had notified them of the modem change but it hadn't been corrected for some reason till I called them again. They can also ping your modem for connectivity.
  12. I'm not sure what you mean by gard drive? And Windows 2000 is different from Me, which is what you said you had in your original post. If the registry is corrupted, it will need to be fixed. You can do a chkdsk and defrag on it first. When you set it to run on reboot make sure you put a check on it to fix errors. The original info I gave you won't work on Windows 2000 if it is NTFS. You can also run sfc /scannow in a command prompt but if it finds problems, you will need a Windows 2000 disk to fix them. I am not aware of another way to fix a corrupted registry in this situation. Deleting extr
  13. So are you saying it won't boot when in the pc you want to perminantly put it in? If that is the case you can try this for starters. Get a boot floppy, it can be ME or 98 and boot with the floppy. You may have to set the bios to boot from the floppy first. Then on the A prompt type fdisk /mbr. It will blink quickly if you do it right and not give you any command errors. Then ctrl+alt+delete to start rebooting. Take out the floppy as soon as it starts rebooting. Just to be clear on this, you want to do this on the pc that will have that harddrive in it. Not the pc with XP. That harddrive should
  14. I would suggest just having one on all the time and going online once in awhile and having a free online scan like Trend Micro. Just in case something gets missed by Avg or Avast or whatever.
  15. My son got a pretty good pc for free. It had nothing but Norton antivirus and the subscribtion ran out a year ago. I have been working on it all day. Trust me on this, you need what you got and the other sugestions as well. Several trogans and a few hundred bugs makes for an interesting day. I even had to get some special programs to get rid of some of this stuff. So to me there is no such thing as overkill. I would also run an online scan once in awhile from Trend Micro. Just in case your Mcafee misses something.
  16. Do all or most e machines have this hidden partition? All I saw was the C drive and didn't think any volume was missing for another drive. I already have ghost, so that works out. I appreciate the info and help. My father has an HP and the restore partition was visible, so it never occured to me that one would be hidden. This pc used AOL at one time so it probably has several files altered or missing.
  17. Its late and I'm a bit tired and I just don't know if it would work. I am going to do the usuall stuff first but in the event that the virus he had messed up to many files, would it work. He doesn't have the Home disk because he just got this pc from a friend who is leaving the country on missionary work. I can't reload it because I only have Pro and the activation numbers are already in use. And it's an E Machine so I don't think Microsoft will do anything to help. If I'm wrong let me know. It sure won't be the first time or the last.
  18. When you say you installed it 3 times, was that a clean install where the drive was wiped clean by formatting? I always repartition and format to make certain of a good install. Is the drive making any noise. Does a chkdsk show any bad sectors? That 100 percent usage at least for me, has always meant a virus / malware problem. Do a clean install if you havn't and get all the updates before you load anything else. Then check the cpu usage. I would also try a memtest first before any of this just to see if your sticks pass all test.
  19. Thanks I appreciate that. I didn't come here to be accused of stealing. I came here for help. I don't appreciate those that know nothing of my situation accusing me of stealing. I don't like what MS is doing because it's further proof that our rights are being tossed to the wayside in favor of corporate profits. I know they have a right to protect their product but not at the expense of my rights. If I have to go to MS I will but I don't like the idea of having to do it everytime I update my machine. That was my rant ..... Thank you for your time. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> How do you fe
  20. If you want to try and boot from it, the pin will have to be set as the master of the 2 drives and the other the slave. If that don't work then as Parrotgeek7 said, set the pin to slave and boot from the other to attempt to get your data. It won't give you a choice because it wasn't set up that way when the os's were loaded onto there drives.
  21. The above advice is good but if it doesn't help give it a memtest. All those freezes and crashes could be bad memory among many other possibilitys. The last pc I worked on had the same problems and did have a bad stick.
  22. This is a shot in the dark, but how long have you been using the Microsoft anti spyware program? I don't know if it is still beta or not but when I tried it I had a cpu usage problem where it shot up to 100 % almost all the time. I didn't have the problem before I installed it. I was just checking it out. I also showed nothing in all the other scans. I tried uninstalling it but that didn't work either. Maybe you would have better luck. I just round up formatting and reinstalling everything the way it was before the beta program and all was fine. This may not be your problem but it sounds ver
  23. Right, so I'm some high class snob who's out of touch? I spent 3 years of my life recovering from a chronic, systemic illness and had to support myself completely off the goodwill of others. I spent years rebuilding my career and business. It was a great lesson in humility. Not only do I have experience in hiring for the positions we are discussing I have a lot of experience in applying for them. I do check the local available jobs - OFTEN. I've never seen any job that required or even mentioned an A+ cert. Unless the job was highly specialized I've only seen general certs like a MSC
  24. The problem with you CC is that you havn't been looking for a job. At least not entry level. You are way advanced in networking and I'm sure many other areas of the IT industry. So you don't see any importance. Check out the jobs for yourself! You will see they often want A+ and a whole lot more. You keep putting down those stores as poor jobs leading to nothing, but we can't all start out with degrees and work high paying jobs right out of the gate. Please stop looking down your nose at people that are just starting out in the computer industry. They often work hard as I did to take the cour
