  1. Hello! If you look on your motherboard somewhere there should be 2 or 3 plug type that says USB_01 USB_02 that are sometimes yellow. These are used for your front usb ports on your case. Now look for any kind of wires that have many pins, as sometimes the cords are marked USB. Take a look and see as maybe the shop forgot to hook the front usbs up.

    Good luck

  2. a few questions?

was it source or did you use the package manager to download the kernel

but for any Linux this is the generic way

first you need to know where the files are, or better do you mean that its not the default and it does list it at boot up, but the default no pick option if the older kernel

in any case open a terminal as root (you can open a terminal use the sudo command if that is how pclinux works.)

    change directory to /boot

    cd /boot

check if your grub.conf is in this folder, some distro's keep it here. if not you should see a grub folder so cd to that

    cd grub

using a text editor exit your grub.conf

here is mine for an example

    # Boot automatically after 30 secs.
    timeout 5

    # By default, boot the first entry.
    default 0

    # Fallback to the second entry.
    fallback 1

    # Splash image to show behind grub.
    splashimage=(hd0,0)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz

    # For booting GNU/Hurd
    title SteveLinux
    root (hd0,0)
    root (hd0,0)
    kernel /boot/Gentoo-Kernel2.6.23 root=/dev/hda3

    # For booting Gentoo with the static rescue shell
    title Gentoo (rescue shell)
    root (hd0,0)
    kernel /boot/Gentoo-Kernel2.6.23 root=/dev/hda3 init=/bin/bb

this file is set up to logical numbering so it starts with zero, if your menu has you new kernel, you can count which entry starting with zero and see the line that says default 0, change that number to your new kernels entry..

now if it is not in you boot menu then do the following.

copy the section for your kernel and past it to the bottom of the file and edit that section to reflect your new kernel settings

I think for pclinux it is your kernel is vmlinz-<version number>

and you have a line that says initrd /initrd-2.6.18.8.tex5.img (or something like that)

this is specific to each kernel so it should be edited to your new version name.

keep your old kernel settings incase we messed something up..

Hello Thanks I'll try what you have suggested. Yes I downloaded and install by the package manager.

  3. I live on a laptop, I can honestly say I have never noticed. It should stay fully charged unless it go into hibernation. If you are running Vista the button that looks like the shutdown is the hibernation button.

Well I just noticed this afternoon when I plugged in the power to my laptop and noticed that my little recharge light was on when turning the laptop on. Once I goto the desktop I noticed the battery icon in sys tray was a little low.

  4. Hello everyone! A few days ago I bought a new laptop and I just want to get your opinion if this is normal or not. The laptop is an HP pavilion just look at my specs below. When my laptop is off and unplugged, and the next day I go to used it with power plugged in the battery has discharge about 10 to 15 percent. Does this mean the battery is defective?

    Thanks Sceeter32

Hello martymas Right now I have 2 sata hard drives, but now I think my problem is that I have 1 sata 1 and 1 sata II and using the sata 1 hd for my o/s. I know my board supports SATA II drives, but maybe its the sata 1 drive thats giving the beep errors. This is my mother board. Only one IDE plug as I have my cd rom & dvd burner running off the IDE

  7. according to your manual. These are the beed codes they listed
    AWARD BIOS Beep Codes

    1 short: System boots successfully

    2 short: CMOS setting error

1 long 1 short: DRAM or M/B error

1 long 2 short: Monitor or display card error

1 long 3 short: Keyboard error

1 long 9 short: BIOS ROM error

    Continuous long beeps: DRAM error

    Continuous short beeps: Power error

    this may be the problem

1 long 1 short: DRAM or M/B error

by the way, nice system :-)

Thanks shanenin it's more two short beeps. At the post screen there is no error code shown. It seems that once I install the motherboard driver cd that came with the motherboard thats when it started acting up. I'm not 100% sure though.

    Thanks again

  8. When you first turn on the computer, the first screen should show which BIOS you have. Should be the upper left hand corner. It'll say AMI,Award or Phoenix. Then look up the beep code in the proper table to tell you what's wrong. I would definitely make sure everything is seated properly.

    Mark

It's A Award bios I just shut the computer off and checked to see if everything is seated properly and everything is fine. I then turned it on and got a weird distorted short beep and one short beep after that. The computer boots up fine and runs fine.

The beeps mean something. I would go to one of the sites we listed and check-up on what the beeps mean.

Well on that site it really don't show the beeps I'm looking for.

  10. Hello all! I just upgraded my computer yesterday and had the computer store do a quick mount to make sure the motherboard and processor and ram are in good working order. I brought the parts home and installed every thing correctly. When I first turned on the computer it gave me on short beep ok. The next time I had to shut it down and went back to turn it on I got a medium beep and a short beep, but the computer boots up fine. This morning I go to turn my computer on and get all kinds of beep then a continuous beep that won't stop. I then shut down the computer and turned it back on and got one medium beep and a short beep and thats it the beeps stop. It seems the computer is running fine and all temps are normal. Does anyone know how to fix this problem? If so I would be so happy.

    Computer Specs

2.20GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Gigabyte 965P-DS3 MB 2GB Ram

    EVGA Geforce 7600GT

    Thank you

  11. Try a little known secret. (if your PSU has a 110/220 switch)

Unplug the power cord from your PC. Switch you power control switch from 110 to 220, Plug it back in, hit the power button. (it won't start). Then unplug your PSU, switch it back to 110. Plug in the power cord and see if that solves the problem. Newer PSUs have it set this way to reset the PSU.

But I agree. It does sound like the PSU more so then the mobo.

I'll try that thanks! I thought I'd upgrade my computer today so it did. I bought a new board with a new processor, and ram, psu.
