The idea of a router is to split an internet connection up among differnt computers, however i wouldnt think they would make you have one, i know my linksys WRT54G doesnt make you have an active broadband connection. Maybe it is something to do with how netgear designs their routers after all if he just wanted a home network why buy a router? a switch is usually cheeper and would be perfect for what he wants to do. Ill second that, however don't limit your search to just dells. Although they are a good computer for the money there are deals out there that give you more bang for the buck cheak out tigerdirect.com, ebay(watch for scams all that, and read EVERYTHING.), new egg, sometimes ive found good deals on yahoo shopping as well. Use the network setup wizard in my network places it should guide you through it (its very straight forward). After using that restart the computers if not promted to, i find it avoids any complections, when they boot up again go to my network places and you should see a shared folder one for each computer that u can drag and drop files to, erase edit, do whatever. I have a emachines c2782 and got 128MB of ram from a freind to put into it, when i did this i started it up and it says i only have 320MB total (originally 256) im gussing the missing 64MB's is being shared with the onboard video card, however i use an aftermarket video card and dont need the onboard one so how do i disable the onboard video card from using my ram?

I have been using win server 03 (trial) for about 4 months and just the other day i put back windows XP home edition (the default OS on my computer that i use as a file server for MP3's. I noticed one of my networked drives (drive M:) still had some of the attributes of win server 03. For example to gain access to the drive over my network it asked for crudentials i put in my old user name and password and it granted me access. I am wondering if i can just use my win server 03 trial CD to set my attributes on all my file servers since windows xp home doesnt support simple file sharing or domai

Hey guys, I have a home network consisting of 9 wireless networked computers, all of which are running either windows XP home or pro. i have 4 network drives which i store itunes, mp3s and such to. Is there a way to add user names and passwords to these network drives? i have googled it and all ive found is the same lousy program that puts a password on files. Ex. of what im talking about, I have a laptop and when i open up mycomputer i click on the network drive (m:) then it naturally opens... what i want is when i click on that drive i want it to pop up with an authentication window asking f

im really not sure if it would be backed up anywhere. the server that we use is one in the class room and is a tower type which i found out today is administered by our computer teacher... bad thing is he knows very little about networking. soo i dont know if the admins would even bother backing up his server. Also i doubt that the admins would be running a third party service (to trace deletings/editing ect.) since their job is most likely to keep the main servers running.
