  1. awsome... will it just show the computers IP address?
  2. Hey guys, i am a highschool student in a computer class and today my documents got deleted off the server that the whole class saves stuff to. Im pretty sure an individual did it in that class, however have no way to prove it. i was wondering if the computer administrators at my school could trace who has edited/changed/deleted my folder... we are a novell networked network... i need to prove that it was that person or else i have to bite the bullet. anything at all would be appriciated. thanks.
  3. Yea that is exactly what i was talking about, which is why id just enable WPA and correct me if im wrong again but doesnt the key change about every 10 minutes soo even when an attacker finds a certain key he is too late, which is why they say WPA is uncrackable (at the moment).
  4. Ive done that, and on top of it ran adware SE and avg with all updates current... the wierd thing is its just that computer and i JUST(5 or 6 days ago) bought the router all firmware is updated and the drivers for the network interface card are all current. Im starting to think its the network card, because it always makes my computer start up unusually slow and doesnt show the task bar icons untill everything is loaded then they all appear at once, but when i have uninstalled the card the computer runs great. Its a sony vaio laptop 2.8ghz p4 with 512 ram.
  5. correct me if im wrong but i thought the way most hackers get into WEP enabled networks was by requesting access to it then capturing the packets and looking through them with airsnare. the source of my information isnt that reliable soo please do make any corrections to that statement.
  6. when i say the computer sits idle i mean that no packets are being sent or recieved i ment to say when my network traffic from my computer to the router sorry*** for example i open up firefox or IE 7 and attempt to load ebay.com but when i do that sometimes the computer does absolutly nothing NO packets are sent or recieved but if i click reload then the site loads fine. The hardware: Belkin Pre-N router with 4 port switch, and the computer im using has a linksys wpc 54 G v2...
  7. MAC filtering only stopes people that arent on your approved MAC list from gaining access to your network... it will keep your average joe neighbor out but if someone has skills and can clone one of your machines MAC's then they will have access to your router, resources everything that is going through your network they will be able to find and see using programs that are designed to unpackage packets. Enable WEP or WPA if you want the best but if you dont live in a metro area then your MAC filtering should do you just fine. One last thing mac filtering does NOT stop all your wireless data fr
  8. i have WPA enabled on my belkin router, however i notice that sometimes i have to reload sites or else the computer just sits idle. I disabled WPA temporarily and found that my internet connection is fast again. Im assuming since WPA has a key sent with every packet that this is the reason it is slow. Is there anyway around this WITHOUT going back to WEP or setting up a radius server?
  9. Ok well i enabled non simple file sharing and when i right click on my shared folder and open up sharing and security i cant figure out how to set user names and passwords soo people on my network can use my resources with a given user name and password any ideas cataclys?
  10. thanks cataclysmcow that is exactly what i was talking about. Im doing this on my home network guys, no policys broken.
  11. how do i turn on/off simple file sharing all OSs are XP home and 2 servers running xp pro and one laptop running xp pro all service packs updated and installed.
  12. At school today i was browsing through My Network places on our Dell computer (2.8ghz p4, 512 ram 40 gb hd) and this network place was a shared folder on one of the computers in the class, but when i double clicked it to open it asked for a user name and password for permission to connect to that computer i was wondering how the kid (im assuming kid its a highschool) put on the password to connect to the computer? I would like to do the same for my home network im running 13 nodes, all wifi 4 laptops the rest are servers or workstations which are also wifi. I have WPA enabled on my network its
