  1. My bet is that just as in Win7 case something is preventing the drive from being "locked" to allow a chkdsk /f to work

    Did Chkdsk /r work

    What about chkdsk /f /r

    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_xp-performance/win-xp-chkdsk-f-does-not-run-at-startup/ab902846-5058-42bc-9f0e-7d29fc2c1c6f?msgId=ccb250ec-6db8-4d62-884d-a9ad3ced78c2

Use chkntfs to reset chkdsk to default behavior

    in command prompt

    chkntfs /D

Might want to try speedefrag it is used to schedule defrag to run on next boot, but will run chkdsk as part of the process.

Freeware, just watch that it does not try to install toolbars etc

    http://www.vcsoftwares.com/SpeeDefrag.html

One other thing that I can think of would be a boot sector virus with a hidden 1mb partition.

    Flash can help you here,

Need to run Tdsskiller and aswmbr

  2. Has it always had this? If so it could be that the reflector behind the screen which spreads the light is "imperfect" got a bit warped...

If this is the case, not much you can do but live with it.

Besides that it depends on what type of backlight (Fluorescent or LED)you have. Fluorescent the bulb could be goign out. LED it could be a bad emitter.

  3. Yeah I miss Marty, think of him every time they report another earthquake down NZ way.

He joins the long line of old friends who have passed. At least someone let us know rather than just leaving us wondering why he no longer posted.

  4. Read this

    http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com/?p=61

Chkdsk worked just fine in beta versions of Windows 7, but somewhere between the last test version and the general release something changed and for some computers running Windows 7 the CHKDSK /f command simply will not run–though oddly, the CHKDSK /r command does run. The problem with that is on todays modern computers with large harddrives, CHKDSK /r can take a couple hours to run.

Microsoft implies this is a problem with computers that have certain infrared controllers on them, though I have seen this happen on computers without any such controller.

Fortunately, Microsoft supplies a little know patch for computers suffering this problem.

    Just go to this page

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/975778

Click the REQUEST HOTFIX link on the top and follow the prompts.

After downloading and running the hotfix, your computer will run CHKDSK c: /f normally.

  5. It now redirects to http://www.g4tv.com which is still up for a while.

I think the on air change takes place some time next month. (April 22 by the site).

    http://www.g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/730099/g4-to-be-rebranded-as-the-esquire-network-on-april-22nd/

It was good while it lasted. Thanks to all who put in time and effort to share the knowledge. It was nice that they kept it up as long as they did. They did not have to, they never had to even add a tech board, but were kind enough to listen to me when I asked them to before the merger with TechTV. Then they reversed course and kept it up after they demodded me and chappy and banned him (I fooled em, I deleted everything with my name on it that would point to me and then changed my username until they relented and said I could stay).

Still it was a fun decade there.

Hmm, too bad Esquire won't h ave boards. Some of this new programming looks promising, Drew Barrymore, Anthony Bourdain,

Esquire Network team is developing a slate of engaging all-new original series such as Knife Fight, a passionate celebration of food, executive produced by Drew Barrymore, Flower Films and Authentic Entertainment. Hosted by "Top Chef" winner Ilan Hall, Knife Fight is an underground, after-hours cooking competition where talented chefs go head to head in front of a rowdy crowd of celebrities, critics and die-hard foodies. Another original series, The Getaway (working title), is executive produced by Anthony Bourdain and Zero Point Zero and features travel-loving, well known personalities - people deservedly famous for excellence in their fields - who take viewers to their favorite city on the planet, giving the insiders’ track on their top spots to eat, drink, shop and hang out.
  6. Probably should be under world and politics but since there is so little traffic any post is a good post.

I think the problem is that their leadership has a false world view. They do not see reality.

They had several failed A bomb tests and finally got one with a 10 Kiloton yield (less than the first three bombs the US made which all were in the 15-20 Kiloton yield range). They appear to take months to years to build a bomb so in the future they may have a few, compared to the thousands of 750 Kiloton yield ones we have sitting around. They have tested some missiles, but not all that great.

So they make a small crater in Alaska, and we turn their entire country into a glow in the dark parking lot.

  7. Interesting.

I do not think that "life evolved on a meteorite" although some of the organics required could certainly have done so.

It does sound "feasible" that life could have evolved elsewhere before it evolved here on Earth and that a meteorite collision with say Mars could have ejected material which wound up falling on Earth as Meteorites bringing some life with it.

But that leaves us with the question of why Eukaryotes and Prokaryotes. Were one the other or both brought here?

Basically most of the life on Earth is composed of cells with two pools of genetic material. One is the cell nucleus (Nuclear DNA) and the other is the mitochondria (mitochondrial DNA) which provide the cell with energy.

While Nuclear DNA is mingled between parents and rearranged each generation; mitochondrial DNA is passed virtually unchanged from generation to generation.

However there are some very ancient very primitive organisms (Archaea) which have only one gene pool.

Now one theory is that a primitive organism with a nucleus absorbed another smaller organism which did not get digested but instead became a symbiote (the mitochondria) and that this was so much superior that it basically eliminated all its relatives and became the ancestor of most of the life on earth.

The other theory says that they are unrelated, that the Eukaryotes evolved separately from Prokaryotes.

Then we have viruses, unable to replicate themselves they hijack healthy cells to do the job. Where do they fit in? Are they more primitive than the archaea or did they come from more advanced organisms which suffered a random mutation and part of their genetic material went rogue? Some bacteria "swap" portions of genetic code (thus spreading drug resistance for example since they swap with other unrelated bacteria and not just when reproducing) , and this could explain how viruses came into being

Still it is an interesting read.

  8. I have a possible explanation.

It seems the Microsoft integrated Flash into IE10 for windows 7 , 8, and RT

To protect from security holes they decided to use a white list and only sites which they approved would be allowed to have active content in the browser or desktop player.

    Gee, smooth move ex lax

Turns out that so few sites submitted themselves to Microsoft for approval and adding to the white list that hey have issued an update to change it to a black list where all sites will be allowed and they will have a black list of sites which antivirus and malware experts have determined to be infected that will not be allowed to utilize flash and active content.

  9. Avast 8 (free for home use) is out.

If you have avast, go to the user interface => maintenance => program update

    and get it.

It now includes a software updater which is similar to the Secunia PSI. It scans your computer for programs with known security holes and checks for updates and patches.

Some it will automatically prompt you to get the update.

Some you have to open the new (improved interface) select software updates and click "fix now" and it will either automatically update / patch or will bring you to the download site for the latest version.

Many nice improvements in the user interface, overall product seems improved, even though it was already a great product they managed to make it better.

  10. For some time now the Computer Emergency Response Team has recommended uninstalling Java Runtime Environment due to security holes which allow zero day exploits. Each time one gets patched a new one appears.

For some time I took the attitude that as long as they were rapidly patching holes, and the number of exploit sites were minimal it was not that much of a risk to average users.

However, with the recent use of a hacked site to use this exploit to penetrate the in house networks at Apple and Facebook and the rapid spread of infected sites I now agree that it is time to just uninstall Java Runtime Environment.

That will free up over 100MB of disk space and eliminate the risk.

If they ever get it all sorted out, then we can safely reinstall if anyone still uses it then.

  11. Well, my friend loaded up her 2 year old Prius with her two little dogs for a 5 week road trip to escape some Michigan winter, visiting friends and family.

She drove from Kalamazoo MI, to Indianapolis, Alabama, across to Jacksonville, FL, down to Orlando, Naples, back to Jacksonville, then home to Kalamazoo.

Don't know the miles, but she spent only $199 on gas...

Heh, looking outside at the snow and ice, she should have found more stops and extended the trip for a few more weeks... :D

I thought you were going to post a movie (MPG), thought you were going to recommend a new movie editor or camera.

  12. Wow, hadn't realized they had been on for so long. Time has flown by these last two years.

The demise of G4 has me looking for stuff to have on in the background and I started watching more YouToo (time warner channel 103 here)

I had ignored EP Daily, The Electronic Playground as I figured it was as bad as it had been on G4Techtv

But I started watching it recently and it has come a long way since then. It really is good enough to put on my "watch regularly" list.

Good game reviews, tech reviews, tech news, movie reviews and much much more.

I deifinitely urge folks if they have YouToo in their cable lineup to check it out and give some of their other programming a chance too.

  13. The forum know as G4 Tech Support gives way to Esquire (blah) on March !8th. Everyone i have talked to says they will be coming to G4. This is great, lets hope they flood Besttechie with their knowledge & help ! So i will be doing Malware help at http://s9.zetaboards.com/Causehead_University/index/ and i have not decided where else i will help ! For my part this is a great site & i know Jeff (BT) Will welcome all ! GL & Welcome people !

    Chuck

I'll be stopping in here more regularly , and causehead and dogsnharmony too as things wind down at G4 to keep in touch with old friends.

G4 has been a ghost of what it used to be for some time now.

Gotta go to the doctors tomorrow; had a fever last night and should have called today. Felt like I had a Urinary tract infection this morning, and it got worse throughout the day. Now I have blood in my urine. Since I have no spleen I hit my emergency antibiotics and will go to the doc tomorrow for more potent stuff. Last time this happened I awas on Floxin for thirty days.
