  1. Windows does not determine what bios you have, your computer motherboard and / or PC manufacturer does that.  (although as chuck pointed out it does allow you to tell the boot manager to boot to the bios ). The BIOS is the operating system of the motherboard before windows loads.  There should be an option which splashes briefly when you first turn on that says something like "Press F2 to enter setup" that is the bios.
Alternatively, most modern bios support boot to alternate device by pressing a key such as F10 or Ctrl+F10  when first powered on. It will bring up a boot options dialog asking which disk to boot to.

However you could just boot to win 8 and then run your win 10 install cd. It will ask where to install.  You can install to a partition you created on your existing drive, install to a slave drive , or even install to a USB drive.   Note that it will replace the boot sector and boot manager on your primary hard drive so it will now have  a win 10 boot manager which gives you an option to choose which of the tow OS to boot into each time you start. Note that if you delete the Win 10 partition, this boot manger will remain and to revert to win 8 boot manager you will need to do a boot repair using your win 8CD or boot manager in win 8.,

  2. I think it has to do with mixed content on the page (both secure and non secure) and a windows update that blocked such pages unless you click to allow mixed content.  You get one prompt and if you say no then the page will not load (note changes take effect after a reboot so initially you notice no change, but restart and can no longer access page)

    Click on Security Settings

    Click on Custom Level button

Go right down all the settings, which is a fair way down the page, to Display Mixed Content.

    Click Enable

    Apply and OK

    Close browsers

Restart computer (change does not take place until you restart)

another option worth trying is instead of going to

    http://www.facebook.com

    try

This should again bring up the prompt and this time click "yes' when prompted to allow mixed content.

Change your bookmark  to the HTTPS://www.facebook.com if this solves it. Check if lock is showing beside URL on address bar to show that connection is secure.

Could try changing IE9 to Compatability view mode http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2536204

If you had said it does not work in any browser I would suggest checking the host file for an entry like 127.0.0.1 www.facebook.com   and if found have Chuck walk you through a cleanup for trojan Vundo

  3. Have you tried running the HP print and scan doctor?

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c03286146&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en

That has solved similar issues for me.   The scan  is the hardest part.  HP was the one that first figured out how to make an all in one able to scan when connected to a network.  Previously you had to have it connected by USB or LPT.   Now that I think of it, there was a work around that worked some of the time.  I did it before the first HP network all in one came out.  Darn that was a long time ago.  Will try to dig up my old notes on that.  I think I was using a print adapter that connected to ethernet to router and let you connect USB and LPT printer to it.  I had an all in one and figured out how to get the scan working  using some third party software and a patch to windows...

    Will look into that.

  4. There is an HP tool that solves a lot of these problems.  I used it on a networked HP all in one that worked fine in XP but would not work once upgraded to Vista. No updated drivers  / software. But I ran the tool and it installed a patch and suddenly it worked.

I will try to remember to check what I used when I am at work tomorrow.

But from this it looks like it is not going to work

    http://h20565.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/template.PAGE/public/kb/docDisplay?docId=emr_na-c04180902&ac.admitted=1415749318213.876444892.492883150#N1004B

he following Multifunction products and All-in-Ones are not supported in Windows 7 and therefore do not support scan:
    • HP Color LaserJet 9085 mfp and 9850 mfp

    • HP LaserJet 3100 All-in-One Printer series

    • HP LaserJet 3150 All-in-One Printer series

If your product is listed here, you may be eligible for a trade-in allowance you can use toward the purchase of any new HP printer and more. To find out whether your product is eligible, go to HP Trade-In Program page (www.hp.com/go/tradein), select Printer - Laser from the Product category list, select the trade-in quantity, and then click >> . You might also consider an upgrade to a newer HP product that will work with the new Windows 7 operating system.

  5. Like email spam they can tell when it is opened and viewed and when someone from her clicks their link.

If you don't check out their link, and you delete the post before anyone else does  then as far as they know this is a dead forum.  Before long they should pretty much quit.    I know one board where all forums are hidden till you join. Once you  join you initially can only post on one board the welcome board (where you introduce yourself).  Thus the spam bots only post on that one welcome board and always post in the same thread. Easy cleanup and the regulars know not to pay attention when they see that thread with a new thread.

  6. Does Besttechie use a Captcha and confirmation / activation email for new accounts?

That generally works.  If not, making all but a few of the boards "hidden" to non members will make the board seem smaller and not appealing to them (and the bots will generally just post in the public boards).

  7. If you are using them as a rewritable  disk (giant floppy disk) where you can add and erase content; yes they need to be formatted with appropriate software.   This is UDF  or packet writing.

Personally I do not recommend this with Vista or Windows 7.  It appears to be considered obsolete / abandoned technology and can cause conflicts (I have encountered several machines where someone tried to install a UDF / Packet  reader  / writer program on a Vista or Win 7 machine resulting in a non bootable machine that needed to have a system restore from command prompt to let it function).

This is similar to but more extreme than the problems caused when you installed certain of these softwares on Win XP  and there was a conflict between its internal cd burning software and the stand alone one.

  8. I now have a policy that when installing ANYTHING, I choose the custom install so that I can view "components" that it wants to install including toolbars and uncheck them.

For example, even Avast free now has a thing that installs when you choose the automatic install which will then tell you you have x number of problems with your computer which can be fixed if you buy this great new program they have to sell you.  Uncheck during the install and no such prompts.

    Follow these uninstall steps

    https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/95319?hl=en

Note the warning about system wide install. You need to be in a master administrator account to uninstall it and you need to run as administrator.  It is quite possible you uninstalled from one user account, but not from the entire computer.

You may want to try the next generation chrome browser Canary

    https://www.google.co.in/intl/en/chrome/browser/canary.html

Oh and I vaguely remember what the problem here is. There  is a component of the profile  that got corrupted and is marked read only and is not allowing deletion (possibly related to an antivirus integration?).  The  installer cannot replace it because it is protected (read only) and it is not compatible.

  9. GeekbeatLive, which is available on YoutToo.tv channel on cable and satellite as well as online now has forums.

    http://geekbeat.tv/forums/

For those not familiar with it, GeekBeat is like a combination of Call For Help and The Screensavers,  with John P and Cali Lewis as hosts.

    http://geekbeat.tv/geek-beat-live-uncut-3/

    http://geekbeat.tv/meet-the-geek-beat-team/

They discuss tech news, review and test new products, and solutions to problems.

The forums are new and still small but to me are reminiscent of the old Tech TV forums.

I am not the only member from the old days to have joined up, and invite you to watch a few episodes, and join in the discussions over there.

GeekBeat is  filmed here in Dallas and just moved into their own building (remember when TechTV did that?) which is being made over as both headquarters and studio.

Just leave the politcs at home.

  10. Plain and simple it went from being a Tech oriented board where people kept their political and religious beliefs to themselves to one where a few loudmouth bigots decided that intolerance was what they wanted here.   As I said before, I have no interest in associating with such people.  Those who remain tolerant and can be civil understand and I still stay in touch with them.

  11. http://forums.logitech.com/t5/G-Series-Gaming-Keyboards/Keyboard-software-8-20-74-opens-folder-at-startup-instead-of/td-p/767137

Incorrect registry path entry opens folder instead of launching app.

Basically an incorrect path entry due to your already having a logitech folder when you installed instead of the new location (designed for win 7 and 8 compatibility) and it installed to the current location but the reg entry points to the location it would be if there were no existing previous folder.

  12. I got signed up through the Healthcare marketplace.

I  encountered no problems with the site crashing, lack of security,  threats to privacy or otherwise.

I was able to compare the policies offerred by several different insurers, and check out their different policies.
I was able to print out the overview and take it to doctors which the provider listed ad preferred / participating and verify the coverage was accepted.

I was able to find a policy which offerred me better flexibility, better coverage (lower deductible and copays) than what I had as well as being accepted by more doctors.

I was able to complete enrollment with no problems.

I was then contacted by the insurer who confirmed that I had been accepted and enrolled and that my first payment was due by January 10th and I could make it online at any time.

I went online,  logged into the insurers secure site and entered my information, confirmed that the policy I had signed up for was the one being offerred and made my payment.

Overall my impression was positive.  The process would have been a lot better had it not been for all the negative publicity which probably discouraged a lot of people from utilizing this resource to research and compare insurers and policies.

Compared to when the IRS rolled out E-File for income tax this was flawless.  The first time I tried to E-File I had so many problems (and they wanted to charge for fixing each one) that I wound up just paper filing for that  year and the next few until they ironed out the bugs.

  13. Well, if nothing else it shows the need and demand.   Remember when sites would crashe whenever they were mentioned on Call For Help Or The Screen Savers?

I doubt that government officials expected people to come out in droves to take advantage of the insurance exchanges. They should have done a better job of publicizing that you do not have to have insurance / pay a penalty until April 15th of next year.

But I think that much of it is people who have not been able to shop for insurance  and did not have it because their employer does not offer it.  They really want to be able to get signed up so that they have health care options other than the emergency room and free clinic.

Remember, if you already have insurance, nothing is likely to change.  They may have to add some coverage which they had not offered in the past, but you won't have to do anything.

There are lots of sites (like the one from Kaiser) which allow you to see what your premium  and tax credit (and hence your final cost) will be without having to provide any information.

    http://kff.org/interactive/subsidy-calculator/

The big deal is that instead of having to go to each individual insurance company website and  provide your information over and over to see what they will charge you, what they will cover, and where you can go you can go to one website, provide the information  (which the IRS already has and they are the ones that verify it and store it) and compare all the policies available in your area.   From what I have heard, I will have 54 different policies available at the silver level where I live.  By asking my doctor's office which PPOs etc they are members of and what insurance they accept I will be able to choose the policy which best fits my needs.

  14. I shop Harbor Freight a lot and have not recieved any such warnings from my bank(s).

I always keep alert as to transactions on my accounts.

Was anything charged using your card?

Usually when it is the database that gets hacked / accessed it relates to online purchases since they tend to retain those if you set up a profile and password so you can check the progress of your order.

If you use it at the stores, they don't retain it, the swipe is transmitted to a processing company (which may have been hacked).   That would be my guess, that the card processing company the one in Billings uses got hacked and their database stolen.

  15. Latest scam going around is you receive a phone call from your bank or credit card company alerting you of fraudulent charges on your card.  The caller advises you to hang up and call the number on the back of your card.  You hang up , but since they called you the line is  still connected if they do not. The caller plays a recording of a dial tone so when you pick up the phone to call the number on your card you will hear a dial tone.  Listening on the still open line they cut the dial tone when you start punching in numbers and then play a recording of a phone ringing when you finish.  They  then answer and ask for information needed to confirm you are the card holder (your birthday, social security number, mothers maiden name, pin number....).

They then tell you that to prosecute the "cloner" who is making the fraudulent charges they will need your card.  They inform you that the bank  is sending over a courier to pick it up, and to please wrap it up and place it in a sealed envelope with your bank / credit card company name and "attention fraud investigation unit" on the envelope.

A person shows up and the victim turns over their card.

A few days later the victim calls the number and enquires when they will get their replacement card and how is the investigation going and are informed that the real credit card company has no idea what they are talking about. By this time their bank account is empty or their credit card maxed out.

  16. Yep credit cards , bank statements, utility bills all get checked and double checked.

Recipts are compared to statements and entries checked off.

Balanced in accounting program, on  paper , and compared to what they show.

Done not just when the bill arrives, but at least weekly and more often if anything seems to indicate a discrepency.

Caution is practical, you are not paranoid if someone really is out there to get you.

  17. It has been out for a very long time. It just got a lot of coverage after some pedo walked into a police station with his computer full of kiddie porn and told them the FBI had told him that if he did not pay a fine he would be arrested.

So he figured the jig was up and turned himself in.

They discovered he had lots of kiddie porn and the FBI virus.
