FAQ: Microsoft Office 2010 free beta

Interface tweaks, desktop innovations & web apps

    Yardena Arar

With the release of the Office 2010 beta, the general public finally gets to check out how Microsoft plans to deliver on its promises for the next edition of its flagship productivity suite - namely, close integration with lightweight Web versions of core apps (Excel and PowerPoint Web are the first to debut for consumers via Windows Live, with Word and OneNote available only in the business-oriented SharePoint 2010 server beta), better multimedia support, a subtle interface refresh, and a slew of features designed to make document creation and sharing easier

Full details at PC Advisor - http://www.pcadvisor...?newsid=3206742

I'm downloading it now. Thanks for the link.

I missed Office 2007 completely and am still using 2003. Looking forward to checking this out.

It looks like the desktop suite and the web based version are two different animals? Is that true?

  2. Thread Resurrection!

OK, I have been buying music, actually I've been to TWO concerts, but it's kind of off the charts stuff.

    Celtic Thunder.

It feels like I've been enamored of this group for ages ... enamored? I'm obsessed. The first thought in my head when I wake up every morning is lyrics from one of their songs! Help me. (I've even learned the Gaelic words to their songs! Oh God ... )

(Did I bring them up before? This is the opening song from a concert two years ago ... I have to have mentioned them before ... oh well, old thread is old.)

    http://www.youtube.c...h?v=RkTZLe4iWEY

Anyhow, the concerts are fan-freakin'-tastic. Beautiful songs, music, humor, and the rowdiest bunch of fanatics I've EVER experienced. I've been to big-name concerts before but nothing prepared me for the crying and screaming and tears and ... PRAYING! Yes, during one Irish song I saw a woman in the aisle praying. Ever seen THAT before at a concert? blink.gif

One of the more familiar traditional Irish songs (you can see here how a couple of years of adolescence has affected the youngest member):

The other sorta-kinda off the charts purchases have been Michael Bublé (I see I have mentioned him before), including something I do around this time every year, a Christmas album (a tradition I must have started LONG ago, as I have around twenty Christmas albums!).

Oh yeah, and the latest from Dream Theater.

  3. Hi Marty.

Global warming is probably the most pressing issue today. The sad fact is that every day we wait to make serious changes, more damage is done. Irreversible damage is only a matter of time. Unfortunately last weeks summit in Copenhagen did not accomplish anything. Although we do now have a president that can at least spell global warming. That's a start I guess.

Most thinking people here know that it's real and needs to be dealt with. Politcians are as usual among the last ones to come on board. .........Yes there are also a lot of people that either don't understand it or choose not to beleive it even with the evidence staring them in the face. But then again, we have a lot of people who beleive the Earth is 6000 years old.

I read an article a few months ago about the Maldives. Due to the low elevation of the islands, there is a movement there to actually relocate the entire populace somewhere else. They were looking at Sri Lanka the last I heard.

It's probably not a bad time to build a boat.

  5. Well, I'm still researching cell phones. I think the choice is going to be a Verizon family plan with 2 phones. I am now considering the HTC Droid Eris for myself. It's listed at Newegg for $49.99 with the dreaded two year commitment. That's half the price as everywhere else.

I never used a capacitive touch screen phone before. Not sure if it will be a problem or not.

From what I've read the only drawbacks seems to be battery life and Android 1.5. The OS is supposed to be upgraded to Android 2.0 in the near future, so the latter is probably not a big issue.

As I mentioned in my earlier posts, I was considering the Motorola Droid. But hey......I also like the idea of an Android smart phone for 50 bucks!

If anyone is using it yet please leave your opinion of the phone.

    Thanks,

    Joe

  7. Little Red Riding Hood is skipping thru the forest road when she sees the big bad wolf crouched down behind a log. 'My, what big eyes you have, Mr. Wolf.' The wolf jumps up and runs away.

Further down the road Little Red Riding Hood sees the wolf again and this time he is crouched behind a bush. 'My, what big ears you have, Mr. Wolf.' Again the wolf jumps up and runs away.

About 1/4 mile down the road Little Red Riding Hood sees the wolf again and this time he is crouched down behind a rock. 'My, what big teeth you have Mr. Wolf.'

With that the wolf jumps up and yells, 'Leave me alone! I'm trying to poop!' laugh.gif

Antioxidants my A*** that is old school and really not valid; most of that crap is disproven.

On the otherhand, there is a compound called Naringenin which is present in Grapefruit rinds; It is the most potent naturally occurring antiviral that is safe to take.

In NIH supervised tests it even stopped hepatitis virus from replicating.

    Available as naringen

I think antioxidents are very useful.

I also LOVE grapefruit, and have a few trees. I'll try using the zest from the fruit. I'm assuming that it's from the zest...or is it the pith? Thanks for the info.

Definately! I agree. We have a somewhat reverse growing season here in hell. I'm putting the victory garden in as we speak.

  11. Hahahahahaha. Yeah, he was sure a dufas,

And I know this is all true, because I read it on the "internets".

  12. We went out to Fry's tonight and took the first look at cell phones. I like the Droid. I think it's now my first choice.

The S.O. wants to get a simple to use phone for herself. She's NOT a geek. laugh.gif At first she wanted a dumb phone....just dial and that's it. But she took a liking to the Blackberry Pearl Flip (Verizon).

    Any thoughts on this phone?

Oh, and it's free with a two year contract. I really like that part!

    Droid

look at phonedog they have a review Blackberry

Thanks. I'm saving the Droid page. I like it. The BB review is for the T-Mobile phone, the 8220.

I'm looking at the Verizon 8320.

  14. I think the big problem back in 76 was that a lot of folks who never had had a flu shot lined up for the swine flu shot because of media publicity.

The downside was that a lot of folks who never knew they had egg allergies , wound up getting a flu shot based on egg for the first time and had allergic reactions and many died. (well the record shows "dozens died within hours" of receiving the shot, obvious anaphalactic shock from allergic response) .This out of 40 million vaccinated; not hundreds or thousands of deaths, just a few dozen. ( In its final reckoning, the government counted 25 deaths associated with the shots.) Then the pandemic failed to materialize but another strain of flu struck and people did not realize that the swine flu vaccine they had gotten had no effect on this other strain so when they got sick they blamed the shot.

Also, initially they made the vaccine for children to dilute, but did not test it as they now do. So it failed to protect a great many of those at greatest risk.

We have come a long way since then both in vaccine production and testing; as well as alternatives for those allergic to being injected with eggs.

"Michael Hattwick, a former CDC official who tracked and analyzed the reactions in 1976, said that one in every 100,000 people developed a neurological disorder, a rate that he thinks is similar to what would be seen with other vaccines if they were tracked as carefully. The federal government ultimately reached court settlements and paid more than $90 million to hundreds of victims who said the 1976 vaccine caused neurological problems."

Probably most of that money wound up in the hands of lawyers, not actually helping those who had bad reactions. But still a few hundred our of forty million is a negligeable number when compared to the potential death toll if even one tenth of one percent die of complications (that would be 40,000 dead)

I'm not allergic to eggs. In fact I make a very good soufflé. biggrin.gif

I get the seasonal flu shot every year with no problems. I think the vaccine I got in '76 was tainted. I probably should have looked into litigation, but at the time I was young and stupid.

    I did get terribly sick.

  15. Good to hear that all is well.

Marty; flu season like hurricane season is reversed between NZ and the US.

Flu spreads fastest when the air is dry ; that is why mom always set up the steam vaporizer in the sick room. In humid air, the virus particles absorb moisture, grow and sink to the ground where they stick to the surface and die and are eaten by scavenging bacteria. In dry air they remain airborne and survive indefinitely until they find a victim to infect.

Most cases of swine flu are mild; especially amongst healthy folks who have weathered one of the previous two major outbreaks. The problem is mainly with young folks with healthy immune systems and underlying health issues. The immune system responds with an overwhelming white cell attack on infected cells causing fluid build up in lungs and heart tissue. This can be fatal. The rest of us, the antibodies from vaccines or previous infections slow the spread of the virus and calm the leukocyte response so there is not the deadly fluid buildup.

Pretty sure we had it here; it was going around for the last two months but is now starting to wane just as the other strains start to appear.

What a botched job the vaccine producers did this year. To little (they finally send 10,000 doses of vaccine to Dallas a city of 1.3Million after half the population had already caught it and recovered) to late.

They really need to take a look at the whole vaccine production and distribution system and do a better job in the future. It is a matter of national security and public health that such pandemics be addressed properly.

As for Autism and Vaccines; I agree TT ; there are those who want to blame something and find Vaccines an easy target.

The most recent studies confirm that there HAS NOT been any increase in Autism over the generations; just that it is now being diagnosed more frequently rather than saying that Uncle Bob is a loner who is a bit slow and does not get along with folks. The current data shows that it is almost certainly caused by a meta genetic switch which is activated by either an infection or activity by the mother during either puberty or pregnancy. Most likely this is something which has not changed significantly over the last few generations

I think this is the article I was thinking of

    http://www.timesonli...icle6844270.ece

    http://autism.about....s-your-take.htm

Or it could just be bad parenting and failure to provide the necessary social interaction early enough. HMmm that explains all the celebrities who have autistic children; they ignored the kid while pursuing their career and now want to blame the vaccine industry rather than themselves.

I had the swine flu vaccine in '76. It almost killed me. Not sure what to do this time around. I'll ask the MD.

  16. I'm waiting for the reviews before I seriously consider it. But since Qworst pulled the wireless plug on the first of the month, I am sans cell phone.

I also have read that Verizon released another Android phone. The Eris. Half the price of the Droid (along with half the processor speed) and a touch screen keyboard.

I went to get one on launch day but they wouldn't budge on the 6 weeks I had until I got my free upgrade (which kind of surprised me since you would think they want to get customers away from the iPhone). So it was either I paid full retail (which is like $560 or something) or wait until December. I'm just going to wait. From what I read though, it's still no "iPhone Killer".

    B

Don't you just love it when they refuse to take your money? Jerks.

I see that Newegg is selling it for $50 less than the Verizon website. $150 for new Verizon customers with their stupid 2 year commitment.

    How I hate committments!
