  1. I tried running Disk Utility to fix disk and repair permissions. That did not fix the issue. Thanks for the suggestion :-)

We manually pulled out the harddrive and used a sata to usb connector along with "Mac Drive". This worked to retrieve all the data. That was our main priority.

We are going to put the hard drive back in and try and do an archive and install. If that does not work, we will just format and start fresh. I will let you know how it goes.

  2. I have a macbook that no longer boots after an update. I would like to pull the data off then reload clean. I tried using ubuntu 8.04. I am able to browse all the files, but when I goto copy them I get permission problems in regards to no read access. I do have read access, since I can browse them. Another option would be to pull the drive, hook it up to a usb cable then use macdrive.

Any ideas to another live cd, similar to linux that may not give me the permission issues?

Any other suggestions to getting the data off?

For what its worth, the owner tried reinstalling, but it froze up.

  3. While Jogging and listening to Windows Weekly. I think i figured out what the problem was. The particular laptop, VGN-cs110e, some models were sold with 64 bit Vista. The disc I had was 32 bit. This was the first OEM computer I have even came across the did not have a 32 bit install of Windows. So the 64 bit key was not compatible with my 32 bit OEM disc.

It all makes sence. Even after doing a restore using the built in partition, my wife said many things were buggy and not working(I am guessing, because it was 64 bit). Since we installed 32 bit vista on it, she has not had any odd issues.

  4. imagine if all 800 billion was kicked back to every person who files an income tax form, even if they owed no taxes. Then each of these people would spend this money how they wanted. That would guarantee the biggest growth ever in the world economy. THAT WOULD CREATE TRUE STIMULUS.

  5. All drugs, including alcohol kill. Why does it make sense to throw Meth users in prison, but not throw alcoholics and others drug pot users in prison. Meth and cocaine are horribly addicting drugs, but it still makes more sense to treat hard-drug addicts as people with a medical condition(this is how we treat alcoholics) then a criminal. The sad thing is we have to let violent offenders out of prison early to make room for non-violent drug offenders like me. I have many good friends who have good hearts who can't stop using drugs, who are now serving many years in prison. What a horrible waste of a life. It makes me sick to see good people locked up with sociopaths.

Save the billions of dollars spent on criminalizing drugs and use this to help addicts. Imagine if the billions spent on prisons and all the other costs associated with prohibition were used to educate and treat addicts like we do every other medial conditional. Believe it or not, this may actually help the problem. I don't want anyone to use drugs, especially children(I have three), but I know creating a huge criminal empire and putting good people in prison is not helping anyone.

The system does not work. People need to look at at with rationality instead of fear.

  6. I personally think all drugs should be legalized. Drug prohibition causes much more harm then good. Keep in mind i was a daily drug user from the age fo 14 till I was 28. The last 7 years of my drug addiction, I was an IV drug addict, mainly METH(I still have all my teeth :-) ). To support my habit, I started selling them at the age of 15 till I cleaned up. I have been clean and sober with the help of AA for the last 8 years. I may have a different perspective then a lot of people.

Legal or illegal is not going to make a difference. If you are inclined to use them you will. All the money we waste on enforcement could be spent on education and treatment. Instead we waste billions on prohibition

This article has lots of good points

  7. I am trying to run some commands in my shell that require the sudo command. For whatever reason, it is not excepting my root password. Any ideas why?

    edit added later//

I can use the sudo command from my admin account, but that seems dumb. Shouldn't I be able to run a shell from any user account and use sudo?

Another thing that seems different from what I am used to. I am not able to su to my admin account from a shell started from my regular user account. Is their some thing similar to Linux, like adding the user to the "wheel" group?
