  1. Hello Marty, and flatiron too. I am considering trying this too, and I sure appreciate the Google tutorials link. That is one I would not have thought of searching Google for. I am on dialup, and I know you are too Marty, so how big is the download and how long did it take to do it? My dialup is pretty slow, the best rate is 31.2Kbps. Also I finally found there is a free version, but is it only for a trial, or is it free totally. I see the paid version is $39 U.S. And I guess that brings me to next question, if there is a free and a paid version, if so is there any difference other than ads?
  2. Hello everyone. Liz I am so sorry you are having so much trouble with the Gateway. Good luck with redoing it with board people's help. Maybe when you do the clean install, and get it all set up with antivirus, firewall, and all the antispyware programs, it will start feeling appreciative of all your good efforts to clean it and protect it, so it will serve you well from now on. Once you get it all done, give it a nice positive image name to encourage it to do well for you all. Maybe it feels unappreciated for all it's service, while it was in such bad computer health/shape? Mac, that was a ver
  3. Interesting thread for sure, thanks folks. I have disabled both messenger (the popup thing), and alerter. Haven't found the other Messenger thing on my Windows 2000. And since I don't instant message, I wouldn't need it or the plus thing. God bless everyone.
  4. Well when I originally posted about it, I thought about saying I'm considering a hanging party. But thought better of it, being the 'guvrmint' and all not having a sense of humor. I am sure this does sound funny, until you experience something like it yourself. I have such a bad feeling about this whole thing, from the very beginning of it. We will see what we can do Monday. The person whose outgoing mail we received, isn't home yet. I feel wierd having someone elses mail here. Don't want to leave it unattended at their box, considering it is a weekend and they might have gone to the beach,
  5. You are welcome Liz. By the way, some of those links are great for all sorts of info. Look around while you are in there. Actually that is how I got alot of my computer favorites, by following someone's (trusted people only) link to something specific like these, then decided to look around the site a bit and found some real good sites for future use. Plus I have a backweb folder of reference page links in my computer favorites folder. Just thought I'd throw the extra tips in for free for you...haha. P.S. Since you mentioned Google, in case you missed it, you can set your Google toolbar to
  6. Hi Liz, I am sorry that I didn't put any of my source links to this problem. If you have it show up on Spybot, I bet there is something on your computer, keyboard, webcam, mouse, or who knows what else, that requires it. It just looks to risky to remove it as far as I can tell. So I have no idea why Spybot has started this back up after they quit doing it. Yes it is something that can be misused, or be bad, but I don't know how to tell the difference, and Spybot only lists it in the aggregate of 54 to get rid of, all or none from the looks of it on my setup. Here are a few links to read up on
  7. Was he deaf too? Mine is deaf (reads lips but cant seem to read addresses), so I am sure will get special treatment. I didn't know there was a formal complaint we can sign, thanks for the info. Might be what we need to do, will check it out with neighbors. I guess it would be better than burning him in effigy at a block party in his honor. God bless everyone.
  8. Hello flash, Yes I saw that one and the other thread of yours over on G4. I was wondering if they were related to this backwebby thing. The backwebby stuff seems to be a no win situation for us (hard to live with and worse to live without it if it is needed), as is any of the automatic whenever stuff wants to update stuff is. I like to be in charge of what is going on and when things update, especially since I am on dialup. Besides somethings are not needed, or are worse in newer versions, and of course the very real possibility of them carrying a bigger payload than what they are suppossed t
  9. rv56, I feel sorry about your snow event after all that work, but take heart that the lawn is mowed so it wont be to high when the snow melts off. My hubby is mowing right now trying to catch up on 3 places, and it is still damp, and is quite high since he couldn't mow last weekend due to rain. As for the barbecue, even one of the local weather men was barbecuing fish the other night and the thunderstorm and rain finished that outdoor event off. He said it is not fun rescuing stuff in a thunderstorm. Ha! Liz, keep trying all the secondhand stores for the kirby part. Was that a soft kind of pli
  10. Thanks for the reply, Yes that was what I thought too, though was somewhat more concerned this time due to it now being in red as bad, versus earlier green as not so bad. But I don't want to jeopardize my HP computer or keyboard operations. Thanks again for your answer. God bless everyone.
  11. I updated Spybot Search and Destroy just fine, immunized too, then ran a scan last night. It found 54 of the "backweb lites" and listed it in red...which it has been ignoring for ages. So why has it suddenly taken them on again, after Spybot people changed their mind about whether they are even a hazzard or not months and months ago? I have researched both Backweb and Backweb lite several times in the past, and again today, via Google. Also have previously seen discussions on my various boards. They seem to be a combo of legitimate product updater and also spyware. I had previously decide
  12. Gee I am glad I am not the only one in the prime of life here. Ha! And those senior discounts are sure a nice reward for making it this far. God bless everyone.
  13. Thanks Marty for posting the warning. I make plenty of typing mistakes too, so can understand this happening, though do not understand the clicking on popups that carry the poison payload. Don't click on popups!!! I read this a few minutes ago on Cnet. Don't mistype Google Another couple of ways to not have to type it in everytime if you don't have the toolbar, is to put it in your favorites, or a shortcut on your desktop. I have my favorite search, Clusty, as a desktop shortcut, at least while it is in Beta. Clusty Searcher The way to put a shortcut on your desktop, is to go up to address ba
  14. Hilarious! I've said a couple of those, or similar ones, and more, unfortunately to my hubby in the heat of battle. 35 years of marriage (next Sept) and haven't killed each other yet. Especially like #3 and # 21. Haven't seen Bill on G4 or here for a long time. I know he has trouble dealing with G4, so hope he missed out on the past few days of threads there. Full moon effect I think. God bless everyone.
  15. I love you guys!!! That was awesome help, especially the pictures showing each step. Bless you folks. I have a program I want to download that I will try this out with, but will wait until this weekend to do it when hubby is around (though he knows even less than I do about computers, but loves me and comforts me when I am nervous over doing something new. Ha!) Next question; does anyone know if the winzip thing, or something similar, is on my Windows 2000? This is the only board I feel free to ask my dumb questions, and know I wont get made fun of. I am so thankful for this Besttechie board,
  16. Happy Birthday Rgarg113, May you be blessed with a long life filled with good health, happiness, and wealth. Mac, remember to use long long matches to light those candles. We don't want you going off, I mean up, in smoke. Everyone stand ready with the fire hoses. God bless everyone.
  17. Wahoooo!!!! She did it!!! She did it!!!! Yaaaay for Liz!!!! Sorry Liz, didn't mean to overdo it there, but am so happy it worked out for you!!! That is so great to get it done and have it come out successfully. Your questions ahead of time helped the rest of us to learn some important things. So that was all to the good, yours and others. God bless everyone.
  18. fist...as in hitting the kitchen counter... Sorry, I had to do the nongamer thing here! God bless everyone.
  19. Hi Kasey, Sure nice to have you, and all the other newcomers, on board. I am one of the old folk that Liz referred to. I may be the oldest (60), don't know for sure. This is a great board, with all ages of people getting along, learning and teaching, and having fun all at the same time. Check out the arcade, the cafe', and all the great places to hang out. God bless everyone.
  20. Hi Liz, I have heard/read this, but still don't know how to do it. Where is it supposed to be saved, and how is it supposed to be scanned, and opened? Does that mean all downloads, like updates etc? Ok...I admit I am a dunce when it comes to understanding things. But what stopped me even trying to figure it out is someone said to put it on the desktop and open with a unzipper. Ok...? I asked but no one came back to the thread to tell me the answer. (I think it was on TTV boards, as I remember.) So what is a zipper/unzipper and does my Windows 2000 have one and is it automatically done, or
  21. Happy Birthday Laxman63, May you be blessed with a long life filled with good health, happiness, and wealth. God bless everyone.
  22. Praise God for your breaking free from being an addict shanenin. I agree that we need God and His Word, in our lives daily to make it from one day to the next. We (hubby and I) haven't walked in your shoes, but have had our own long trials, but God in His love and mercy and grace are bringing us through to the other side. Praise God. We too tried doing things our way without Him, until we were saved at age 40 (me) and 42 (hubby), and even then it took many years to decide God was right on everything, and that our bull-headed wrong way nearly cost us our marriage (and a whole lot more) because
  23. Happy Birthday to one of our favorite Besttechie youngsters. May you be blessed with a long life filled with good health, happiness, and wealth. P.S. I am sorry we missed out on starting this thread earlier. Unless I just missed it somewhere else? Forgive us please? God bless everyone.
  24. I posted this on another thread where Marty mentioned his concerns about Google tracking people. Quote: I am not to keen on Google (bots) getting all the thread/post info on message boards either Marty. But they do it whether we use Google or not. For instance the little bots travel all through message boards looking for new stuff to update Google, so that people searching for something can find whatever we have said about it. I can see good coming from it, for instance when I want an answer to something I Google for it and often it (answer) is in a message board thread so the collective intel
  25. Welcome to the Besttechie board family. Check out all the great sections, and the arcade too. Be sure to stop by the cafe' for a cup of coffee anytime. God bless everyone.
