  1. mmm.. in the section of Video & Graphics there is the following information:

    Intel 845GV Integrated Graphics

64MB max. Dynamically Shared Graphics Memory

Does that mean that 64MB is the only amount possible related to graphics in this computer?, and since it doesn't have an AGP slot that I won't be able to upgrade the graphics card unless I upgrade the mobo as well?

  2. It's strange I also didn't find a notoriusly big video card inside (like you usually see in magazines and internet articles about upgrading) instead the port for the monitor was a small connection that was apparently built right in the motherboard. I'm not sure if the computer could be considered old or not it has a 2.50 GHz processor. Is there any freeware program that I can donwload in order to check the hardware specs for this desktop computer? something that tells me perhaps what brand and what type of hardware is inside, Berlac Advisor perhaps?

  3. The big question, does your computer have an agp slot? if you look inside the case, it will look diffferent then your pci slots(usually a darker color and on top).

I opened the case and checked, but I'm afraid that this desktop computer doesn't have an AGP slot. Does this mean I can't upgrade?

    Edit:

I could try purchasing another video card (that is if it's possible to upgrade without spending the equivalent for a new PC)

  4. I use Comodo's firewall, it's small yet powerful.

I used to run Zone Alarm. But to me it's a bloated program, And will slow your system down by using up resources. I used to believe in ZA until I started beta testing Vista and ZA wasn't compatible. After trying quite a few other firewalls. I came to see just how bloated ZA was. Now I run Comodo with Vista, and PC Tools Firewall with my XP build. (Personally I like PC Tools Firewall better.... But it's not compatible with the 64bit version of Vista, which is the one I run).

And I would say Avast for your AntiVirus. But there are a lot of free firewalls and antivirus programs out there that work just as good.

I didn't know about PC Tools Firewall Plus 3.0, would you say is better than Comodo firewall to run in XP?

  5. Something happened with the Thinkpad R40, If I press any key (U, I, O, P, J, K, L) that also has a number on it I get only the number instead of the letter. Does anyone know how to fix this? Help!!!

    Edit:

Not sure if this matters at all, but I have installed Ubuntu in another partition in this laptop as well, I have tried booting into Ubuntu and this problem doesn't present at all when I use Ubuntu, also it's been at least 3 weeks since I've installed Ubuntu on it and the keyboard was working perfectly fine every time I booted into either Windows XP or Ubuntu.

  6. I got my hands on a ATI Radeon 9800 SE DDR 128MB Video Card, and although it's not top notch in comparison to most current video cards in the market nowdays I want to try and see if it's possible to upgrade an old PC with it. However, I'd like to know if it's actually possible for this mobo to configure the card, and also if the power supply will be able to handle it, since I've heard that many times when you try to upgrade the vid card you end up upgrading the PSU as well, in either case, how can I go about this to see if the desktop computer will be able to accept/handle this vid card at all?

  7. What kind of XP disk is it? I have a hunch it is not a plain oem cd. Could it possibly be an upgrade or retail version? If it is, this will not work with an oem key.

From what I remember, even the key that comes preinstalled with most oem computers(different then the COA key) WILL allow you to install, but will NOT allow you to activate.

It's an Win XP Pro CD, it's the full version not an upgrade, and it didn't come with the laptop, she bought it separately. She has the disc but she doesn't have the box with the product key.

  8. On a pre-built OEM system the key found by Belarc or any other program is usually a master for the OEM maker. You need to use the key that is on the sticker applied to the PC/Laptop.

I tried that too, but it still takes it as invalid, Terrorist can you reply in the thread "optimizing a system without doing a fresh install?" as I said before I don't mean to hijack someone else's thread, thanks in advance for your reply Terrorist 75

  9. don't mean to hijack the thread but something similar is happening with a friend's computer. I install her copy of XP and then enter the product key of the CD (though obtained from berlac advisor in this case since she lost the original envelope) but it still takes it as invalid, not sure if there's something wrong with these XP installation disks.

  10. I have an update on this issue, in the last week my friend bought a new 120 GB hard drive for this laptop, just today we got some spare time from schoolwork so I helped her and installed the hard drive, since this hard drive is much bigger we thought about installing her copy of Windows XP using the CD and her key license recovered thanks to berlac advisor, as suggested on this thread, we thought about formatting the old drive once this new one is installed, registered and running, but to my surprise when I was trying to install WinXP in her new 120 GB hard drive and use the license that Berlac Advisor recovered from her old hard drive, it just wouldn't work, it didn't accept it at all. Now, I have some questions:

Why didn't the installation wizard accept the key license from berlac advisor? aren't they the same?

She doesn't have the original envelope for her copy of WinXP, what are her options at this point?

Would it be possible to install her copy of windows by creating an image of her computer and then try to install from that in the new drive?

Is there any way for her to make a fresh install again and not lose her copy of windows?

Thanks in advance to anyone who responds

  11. Have you changed anything recently, like adding the memory from the other Thinkpad? Has liquid been spilled on it previously?

No and Yes, what I did was open it up, and take out the RAM memory from the A31, after checking how much there was I put it right back in, I didn't switch it with the memory on the R40 at all, and there hasn't been any liquid spilled onto the A31.

  12. Today I ran into a problem with the Thinkpad A31, the screen is completely black and nothing shows on it, neither the IBM logo nor the boot screen for the bios, when I turn on the laptop it remains silent, and doesn't give any type of sounds, although one of the times I tried it gave me 4 beeps then stopped then gave me other 4 beeps and that was it, nothing else happened and the screen remained black, does anyone know what kind of problem could this be? or if it's possible to fix it?
