  1. My computer has 2 drives (C and D), drive D was added to the computer some time after it was purchased. I have reinstalled Windows in drive C before a couple of times and never had to touch the secondary drive, and I was always capable of using both drives as soon as I had reinstalled windows, so yesterday I decided to reinstall the partition C (did the last one about a year ago) while the drive C seems to be ok, I can't access drive D, instead I get a small DOS-like black box and an error message that reads

    D:\GLXB.PIF

Invalid program file name, please check your pif file. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

I have tried out with a hardy heron live CD and I'm able to access the drive through it, terrorist 75 told me that the file was an infection and suggested that I post a hijackthislog file:

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

  2. I was playing an online shooter game, when suddenly the fps dropped drastically. I decided to exit and restart the computer, when I did I got a message from the computer:

"Hardware Monitor found an error. Enter Power setup menu for details"

so I went ahead and pressed F2 and went into the BIOs, then I went to the "Power" menu and then to "Hardware Monitor" sub-menu, however, there's no error message there, only the CPU temperature being displayed, the only odd thing about is that sometimes it changes.

Is this something I should worry about? and if it is, can anyone help me solve the problem?

  3. Not a huge of WD My Book external drives - love WD internal drives, but not a big fan of the external stuff. I prefer LaCie drives - if you look on my blog I recently did a post on buying an external drive. Also, I have a special discount on LaCie drives for BestTechie members which can be found here:

Does it transfer you to a sale representative? all I got was an answering machine.

It should, what time did you call? If possible I would call before 5PM EST. I'll contact Chris (the guy who gave us the deal) and see what he says to do.

Well, since Jeff posted it in his blog, I had the intention of buying the 1TB - 7200rpm - USB 2.0, IEEE 1394a - USB, FireWire, External SATA - External external hard drive with special discount that he mentions in his link, but it's not available for purchase at the site.

I called before 5 pm EST, I wanted to place an order ATM, so I tried contacting customer service, but they just ask you to leave a message.

  6. I've been meaning t get a Western Digital My Book Home Edition 1TB to store all my data from documents to pictures to movies, so I decided to search for reviews on google, but they are all mixed up. Can anyone attest to the quality of this product? Any input would be appreciated.

    P.S.

Regarding the triple interface of this external hard drive, is it true?

    eSATA > Firewire > USB 2.0

eSATA faster than Firewire, and Firewire faster than USB 2.0?

  7. Not a bad system. Virtually any webcam will work.

Well I was checking some models, and then I found one model that seemed good enough, so I went to amazon.com to check on some reviews:

    http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-QuickCam-De...5575&sr=8-1

One of the reviewers said that you need a fast machine in order to use it, like a 2.4 GHz or a Core 2 Duo, this is exactly the kind of problem I'm trying to avoid, I don't want to purchase a camera and then later on find out that my computer becomes really slow because of all the excessive CPU usage.

  8. I'm looking for a webcam that an old A31 thinkpad can handle. The laptop has a 1.90 GHz processor and 768 MB of RAM, I have a headset, so a mic integrated on the webcam is not necessary at all, does anyone know of any that an old system like the one aforementioned can handle?

Edit: Also I'd like to be able to get this laptop working with wireless internet access, what kind of peripherals does the laptop need to accomplish this?

  9. I'm trying a game on a laptop right now and it works flawlessly, but with a small problem, since this is a first person shooter kind of game I don't use the keyboard on the laptop but instead I use a desktop keyboard by using one of these:

    ps2keybconnector.jpg

    (laptop doesn't have a PS/2 hole unfortunately)

The problem is, when I play using the external keyboard I experienced some delay (lag) of about 4 sec from time to time which in the middle of a heated match is just unacceptable. I have tried playing with the laptop's own keyboard and there's no delay or lag at all, so I'm wondering if this problem can be solved by purchasing an USB keyboard instead, anyone recomend a good brand in particular? it doesn't have to be a gaming keyboard, just a good cheap keyboard.

  10. I have a question are all the processors for laptops "Intel Centrino - Core 2 Duo inside" or are there several types of them? such as: Wolfdale, Yorkfield, Conroe, Kentsfield, Harpertown for the desktop?

The mobile Core 2's are Merom (first generation) and Penryn (second generation). The next generation, based on Nehalem, is scheduled for late '08 or early '09.

There are also several generations of Centrino platform: Napa (first Core 2 generation), Santa Rosa (current generation), Montevina ("Centrino 2", scheduled for June), and Calpella (scheduled for mid-'09).

Which processor from all the Core 2 Duos would you recommend? the system will be doing some heavy processing, as said before, it will be working with satellite images using software like Erdas and Arc gis, also I'm thinking the laptop would need at least 4 GB of RAM to work with these.

  11. I just checked and Dell is offering a Dual 640 GB 5400 RPM Hard Drive, I assume it's 2 hard drives instead of one, does someone know how prompt to hard disk failure are 2 disks instead of 1? also, does each hard drive appear as a different partition on the "my computer" menu, or is it configured in another way? thanks in advance
