  1. Think I almost figured it out. I created a restore point before downloading 11 critical updates...Restored and the problem went away. I am going to download them one at a time to find out which one is the culprit and then see if there has been problems or a fix that one...It's getting bad when you can't trust critical updates put out by your OS. OOps ..just made myself laugh...

  2. I AM a Firefox user..but have to use IE for certain sites. I had a problem that started about a week or so ago. Everytime I start IE and during any session with it...the window to work off-line always comes up. I go to File (on tool bar) and work off-line is checked. (like a default). Tried all scanners in safe mode etc..

I didn't download anything or do anything with settings. It just started one day. I restored to a few days before and it was gone....Haven't seen it until this morning. Doing my normal scanning and stuff last night. Thought I should check for Windows updates and there were 11 critical updates waiting to download. (Wasn't notified so something is wrong there too..but not worried about that.) I downloaded all of them...and then this morning....the work off-line problem started again. I don't ever question critical updates, so didn't look at each one. Can anyone shed some light on what the problem might be?? Maybe not any updates..just a coincidence...Hate to unintall them and install one at a time to see if one is the culprit if it's just a simple IE setting that I am missing.

  3. *Nerelda hangs her head in shame

In my state of exaughstion, I somehow didn't think to clean out the cache and temp files.....it works now. I'll go sit in the dunce seat.

I guess this is what I get for staying up so late even though I can barely keep my eyes open.

Suddenly my brain said to me "Why the #$!! havent' you cleaned out the temp files yet?" And so I answered by doing so and voila! I'm an official dunce now.

Thanks to all for your help and suggestions. I think I shall go to bed now.

You are no dunce......this will happen to me someday..and I'll know what to do...learning experience for me....

  4. I only know how to clear the reg in the program I have (Reg Cleaner), I don't know how to get here: Windows\System32\DRIVERS

I'm not as techy as I prolly should be, I don't usually go into the reg itself.

Go to Windows Explorer...(Not Internet explorer- the big blue E) It's probably not a shortcut for you...Sould be under start >programs>Windows explorer. This brings up all the files on your hard drive....Double Click on C: (drive) scroll down to Windows and double click that....look for the System 32 folder..double click on that..and then look for the drivers folder..double click on that and you are in that folder...Hope this was what you were asking for ......

  5. My little girls name is Michelle...love that name...Actually she's 14 now...but still my little girl....only thing is it doesn't really go with Ann...or does it??? I love Jacob for a boy..and my second choice for a boy would be Joshua... I can see by your baby site that you are enjoying every moment of the whole experience..You are going to be an awesome dad!!!Keep the updates coming..(only one non-joy is the lamasse(sp) classes...) But when I was there to see my baby born and see her first breath and cry was the most incredible moment of my life!!! Couldn't cut the chord tho...doctor said it is a bonding experience...I asked if he was going to take that off the bill....he laughed at me....$$$$$$$$$$$$....I was just afraid of doing something wrong....sorry for going on so long...but you have so much to look forward too....a moment you will cherish forever!!

  6. Personally, I think Mary's reply was a rude way to welcome someone. (Or at least it sounded that way to me. Sorry if it wasn't meant that way.)

If someone truly wanted to learn how to use that kind of information for malicious reasons, they would learn it from the underground sites who have the best information. Believe me, that kind of malicious information isn't that hard to find. ;)

I agree totally with Nerelda. He was asking for technical help and enough replies were made about the differences between learning about how hacking works, not for malicious purposes. Not a good way to welcome someone here....As Nerelda said ..there are plenty of underground sites he could have gone to if he was planning evil....

And calling someone a mongrel is just the flicker to a flame.....not nice.....maybe you need some time away.....

  7. Marty,

In the other thread that Majorgeek linked to was a reference to spoofstick. This an excellent program and shows you what site you are on just in case you go to a site that routes you to another site...It's free and definately worth having!!! If you decide to use it...don't freak when the fonts come up huge..You can change that.....

Thanks majorgeek for checking this out also!! I know many many people use that site to download...

    :D

  8. Hi and Welcome,

Please download this program called HijackThis and then post your HJT logfile in this section of the forums

    HijackThis Direct Download

HijackThis Logs - Where to Post

Before you post please put HijackThis in a permanent folder. Follow this to learn how.

    Click My Computer, then C:\

    In the menu bar, File->New->Folder.

That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis". Now you have C:\HJT\ folder. Put your HijackThis.exe there, and double click to run it.

This will allow backups to be made and saved By hijackthis in case something goes wrong

Follow this link http://www.netstar.me.uk/hjt/hjt.html if you need help.

    Good Luck. :D

    Showoff!!!LOL

Auriga....definately follow B's post before mine!!!! He is one of the experts I mentioned before!!!

  9. Thanks for the replies.

I used Adaware, but not in safe mode. I don't have A-Squared or Spyware Blaster, but do have Spybot S&D 1.3 which doesn't even pick it up.

I have AVG anti-virus software running (it did pick up ByteVerify virus, but it disappeared and I'm not sure if it's been dealt with or not and I couldn't locate the file which AVG pointed to at the time).

I also had Zone Alarm running at the time, up until last week after Linksys advised me I didn't need it with my WAG54G Gateway as it has it's own firewall.

Operating system is Windows XP Pro, but haven't got latest service pack update. The original IEXPLORE.EXE icon has been corrupted on all but the Administrator's account, and had to put a shortcut onto all the other accounts.

I don't know how to disable System Restore.

So if I disable system restore, run Adaware in safe mode should that permanently eliminate the problem?

    Thanks again for the help.

My advice is to get a squared and spyware blaster...Spyware blaster works with Spybot Search and destroy...just google them or go to the pinned topics for spyware tools.. Make sure they are all updated...AVG just had an update today when I checked...Disable system restore......boot in safe mode and run all scanners...(spyware blaster just gets updated..you don't run that one) reboot and then enable system restore. I'm HIGHLY suggesting the other scanners....There are also many great online scanners..let me know if you need them...good luck.....Not sure about the corrupted file...have to leave that to the experts here....Takes a while to do this, but once your computer is clean...and you keep everything updated weekly at least and run scanners at least weekly.....you should have excellent protection and not find much showing up...

PS...Wouldn't hurt to get IE -Spyad also if you use IE as your web browser....

    :D

  10. Please help me to get rid of Coulomb malware. A member of my family 'caught' this malware and it's a nuisance. Ad-Aware removes it, but not permanently, so I presume it's in the registry?

    Thanks

    Auriga

you should also disable system restore..and as stated..more specs would be helpful

Thanks screi......should have remembered that very important step...
