Here's my current desktop. OpenSUSE 10.1, KDE 3.5.1 on a GA-7N400L (nForce 2), xp2600, 9800 pro. Quick rant: Yast won't let you add local directories as a package source - other than that it works, but its extremely slow. Zen just crashes on me when installing packages. So I took some advice and downloaded smart-0.41-25.guru.suse101.i686.rpm (Smart is also included in the OpenSUSE distro) It came with some common sources/mirrors preinstalled, its fast, and it works. To anyone having trouble with Yast, I'd recommend using smart instead. Apologies for the verbosity.

Thanks to all who responded. I tried formatting the thumb drive in kfloppy (followed the directions in the documentation) and it hosed my drive. Had to reformat by command line to fix it. I'm sure this will work in some future version of kfloppy. I did assume that the partitioner in Yast could do it to - just seemed like overkill. A command line really seems to be the "easiest" way to do this. (for me) Thanks again.

Umm, I guess I'll just stick with the command line. Seems easy enough, and has the least chance of screwing something up. (I don't like the thought of using partitioning software just to format, if I don't need to) If there's a general lack of GUI tools for this - that's fine, Just wanted to see if I was missing something obvious. Thanks for the info.

I'm running OpenSUSE 10.1 (love it BTW - check it out if you get a chance). Anyway, I spent half an hour trying to find a way to format my USB thumb drive in the GUI (KDE 3.5.1) with no success. Finally figured a way to format in a command line: # mkdosfs -c -F 16 -n "volume name" /dev/sda1 This worked fine, but there has to be an easier way to do this. I was wondering how you format a USB drive in whatever distro/Desktop Environment you use. ty

Yep, Settings > Save View Profile "Web-Browser"... uncheck "save URLs in profile", check "Save window size in profile", save. Easy. That's what I was looking for. Don't know how I missed it. Thanks.

I'm running SUSE 10.1 alpha 4 (KDE 3.5), and would like Konqueror to open maximized instead of in its default windowed size. Can't seem to find a setting to let me do this. Is it possible? Thanks, Linux Noob.

Been playing with redhat 9 recently. First-time Linux user.
-
Thanks very much. They even had a .rpm just for Redhat 9 ! Now grc.com says I am completely stealthed. Expect more annoying questions from me in the future. And thanks again.

I threw together an old computer and installed Redhat 9 - just for a taste of Linux. I notice if I go to "shields up" for a port scan, ports 0 and 1 are closed (not stealthed) and my machine is apparently replying to pings (I guess it shouldn't) Would a more recent distro solve this issue? Should I install a 3rd party firewall? If so, could somebody recommend one? Also I'm on dialup, if it makes any difference. (can't believe I got this modem to work). Thanks

Having Trouble Opening A Certain Program

Take ownership of the file. Since you're admin you shouldn't have to do this, but you might as well give it a try anyway. -
So I'm Building A Computer...
Ham Blowfist replied to maddrummer57's topic in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP
That mobo needs a 24 pin PSU. The one in that case is almost certainly a cheap 420 Watt 20 pin. You can get adapters, but its generally considered a bad idea. Get a good ATX 12V 2.0 PSU. (Antec maybe) You could also spend more on the RAM and get CAS 2.0 instead of 2.5 but that won't make a big difference. Other than that it looks pretty sweet to me. Killer GPU and CPU. -
I keep these 3 files in a folder on my hard drive; spellbound_0.7.3.xpi spellbound_lib_win32_1.0.6.xpi spell-en-US.xpi When I reinstall Firefox, I drag them one at a time to the Extensions window. That way I don't have to muck around on the Spellbound website. I don't know what that error means, but I would uninstall Firefox, delete the Mozilla Firefox folder in Program Files, delete the Mozilla folder in Application Data, and reinstall. Like JDoors said.

*.vcd & *.dat Files.....
Ham Blowfist replied to The Dragon Slayer's topic in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP
If you right click the .DAT file and choose open with Windows Media Player, it should play the VCD. Its always worked for me. I probably wouldn't make that association permanent. Who knows when you may want to open a .DAT file with Notepad or something else. Give it a try. Edit - I just tried it and it still works, haven't played a VCD since Win98. The .DAT file is in the MPEGAV directory.
