  1. I believe the reason your computer speedily access http://www.msn.com and very slowly accesses www.msn.com is because of something called the URL searchhook. What this does is it takes the domain name (http://www.msn.com) and turns it into its IP address. I believe that www.msn.com first needs to be turned into http://www.msn.com before it can we translated into its IP address, so the more work for the URL Searchhook causes more time to be lost. Perhaps, i'm not too sure about this...

  2. sorry, I did not mean to delete your(murtu52) post  . My mod powers got the best of me.

could you have accidently erased your windows partition?

what does the output of the command

    mount

    show you?

    edit added later///

I accidently erased murtu52's post about editing grub to boot windows 2000. That is what this post is trying to answer.

I'll try that now....i'll post back afterwards. Will Ubuntu recognize FAT32?

  3. eTrust is a very good AV too..It auto updates and you can set it to auto scan nightly too. You can get a year free at the MicroSoft site. Don't go for the 30 day one at eTrust. I used it for 3 months and went back to Avast free. I like the interface better. But it did a very good job of keeping me clean. (I tend to get lost in some rather dark alleys following links all over the WWW.)

Actually, one of the premiums for SBC yahoo DSL is eTrust AV. I use it, and i must say i am thoroughly satisfied. Running it in conjunction with ZoneAlarm, I haven't had any spyware/virus/trojan/worm trouble for a long time now....

  4. Well, i'm going to high school in september, but when i go to college, i don't plan to do any type of CS or comp. engineering major. I plan to do some other type of engineering, maybe med or dental school if I think i can do it :D.

  5. Hey everyone!

I'm sure you've noticed my absence for the last few days, I was busy getting every little thing on my computer burned to disk, and wiped everything clean.

I had years of clutter spanning over 6 partitions and I was sick of it!!

Stuff I haven't looked at in years, and piles of old installers and useless crud. So I took some time to go thru absolutely everything, transfered all the stuff I wanted to keep into burnable sized folders on a new partition, and backed it all up onto CD's.

Then 2 passes with Active KillDisk on both HDD's, and start out completely fresh again.

Everything has gone super smooth so far, and its a good deal faster without all the years of junk gunking things up.

I always defrag right after I load the AV and firewall, and then after every few other program loads to make sure everything stays in a nice tight package.

I had 15 CD's of stuff to burn, but only a fraction of that is going back on. It sure is nice to have all this space again, now...its time to start filling it with new crap...;)

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Maybe I should do that...There are a bunch of programs that i can't uninstall even though there files contain nothing, and probably useless junk on my machine as well....hmmm....

As for the amount of cds, perhaps you should consider buying a DVD burner, those are great!

  6. You're very welcome!  Good luck, man!

As I suggested take the time to learn about the components in your laptop, then find the distro that'll support your laptop hardware.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Well, i'm pretty good with hardware (at least better with hardware than software), but as for distros, i'm totally clueless ^_^^_^^_^

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Once you've determined that your laptop will run Linux I suggest that you give one of the rpm based distros a try. Ubuntu, Mandriva or Fedora are easy to install and configure. The websites for these distros have a lot of support documentation; I suggest that you read up on how to install Linux, configuration, terminology, file systems.

As you learn more you'll feel confident as you prepare to install Linux.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

The absolute funniest thing about that is that my laptop already runs Ubuntu :lol::lol::lol::lol:

  8. yeah, my KnoppMyth computer isn't doing what i want it to do, and now even my Ubuntu laptop can't compile the drivers for the network card....I'm willing to do it, it just seems anytime i try to fix the problem it never works :(.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Hey murtu52, here's a link about Linux and laptops that may help you.

    Linux on Laptops

You can check up on your laptop. Good luck. :D

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Thanks...I think i'm abandoning my KnoppMyth project....it just won't work, and the harddrive i bought costs $100. So my dad said to return it, or fill out the $50 rebate (if i thought i could do it). We are going to return it <_<<_<<_<).

As for my laptop, well, i still have hope for that :).

  9. Any time I find myself grumbling about struggling with some configuration issue with one of my Linux boxes I remind myself why I started to use Linux in the first place.

    1.  Low cost.

    2.  Stable, secure.

    3.  Open source.

    4.  Fun......I'm never bored, there's always something new to learn.

Also, when I read articles like this I'm happy I'm a Linux user. :D

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

yeah, thats the kinda of stuff that makes me want to learn more....but i don't know....:D
