in order to get my Wlan to work, I had to go into the config file and manually put in the essid line for it to work.

in my case I had to put "linksys" in the line for the essid in the config file. then my WLAN option showed up on the laptop.

worked from there on.

<dumb question>Where would I find the config file for this broadcom wireless (onboard) card?</dumb question>

IIRC the file you will need to edit is /etc/networking/interfaces, there you set gatway netmask essid network key etc...
